22 Galleries in Northeast L.A. to Open their Doors this Weekend

This Saturday night the Northeast LA Gallery Night returns to showcase some of the most innovative and eclectic art in the area. Twenty-two galleries will open their doors late on a not quite walkable path centered near Highland Park and Eagle Rock (download the updated map here). Started some five years ago as more galleries moved to the area, it has grown into a neighborhood institution. According to founder and director Brian Mallman, "There's just something that draws artists here, maybe because it's one of the last affordable places to find studio space in LA." more ›

Guerilla Sharrows Appear in Northeast L.A., Cleanup Will Take 60 Days, Says LADOT

City approved sharrows--street markings that educate drivers to share the road with cyclists--have been buried in the city's bureaucracy since first proposed over a year ago. While plenty of cities around California have painted them on their own streets, Los Angeles officials say they are still studying the issue. more ›

Northeast(side) Hosts 'gObama 08' this Saturday

The nation is two months away from selecting a new leader bean, as Homer would say, which of course means it's rally time. No, it's not the bottom of the ninth with Manny up and runners on the pads, and the monkey hasn't made it's way up the 5 from Anaheim. It's political rally time, and what better way to get involved than to also grab a drink, dance a little, and maybe win a free massage or acupuncture? more ›

On Saturday morning, hundreds of Northeast LA residents marched for Peace in the Northeast. Crime, drugs and gangs have all been spotlighted in the community this past year and it was time to take back the streets. "It was amazing to see the people who came out and to have hundreds of folks standing for peace in their own community," explained Councilman Eric Garcetti, who represents part of the region, over the phone on Monday. more ›

LAist Interview: The York Bar Proprietors

In business since summer and reviewed then by LAist, The York is a gastropub in Highland Park located in the same spot that once housed The Wild Hare and before that, The Dragon. Looking nothing like its more quaint predecessors, The York offers drinks and food to the Northeast LA neighborhood in an updated, contemporary style. When business partners/owners, Ryan Ballinger and Gabe Byer took over the space, they tore out the old wood paneling... more ›

Dork on York on York

Dork on York on York

There is a serious water (-ing hole) shortage in Northeast LA. Despite their hipster enclave status, I’m always surprised that there aren’t more places to drink in thriving cultural hotspots like Eagle Rock and Highland Park. The recently opened York on York attempts to correct the problem. The “neighborhood gastropub” is located about halfway between Figueroa and Eagle Rock Blvd. in the increasingly popular small stretch of York that also includes Johnny’s, Marty’s, and... more ›

The Neighborhood Project: Garvanza

Once the heart of the Arts and Crafts movement in Los Angeles and a bohemian artists' colony, Garvanza is today one of Northeast LA's hidden treasures seeking to retain its turn of the century identity while creating a liveable neighborhood for the twenty-first century. Although many consider Garvanza to be just a part of Highland Park, this small and hilly area brimming with historic buildings has more than enough charm and character needed to... more ›
