"Laemmle Theatre is working on their architectural drawings and hoping to secure financing to be able to start construction," according to Curbed LA.

Take a Tour of Historic North Hollywood This Saturday

Don't buy into the old notion that there's no history in Los Angeles. If anything, our weekly LAistory series will handily prove otherwise. But, fine, don't take our word for it. Why not take some experts' words and get out and about for yourself in the remarkably historic North Hollywood neighborhood, where you can learn about the days when the grounds were swollen with flood waters, the park was instead a massive dried-fruit operation, and Lankershim Boulevard was--okay, well, it was still Lankershim Boulevard, but it had all sorts of different shops and stops.

One of Three Public Art Projects Coming to NoHo Arts District Next Week

This year marks the 30th anniversary since the NoHo Arts District began to change from scary, dirty and dangerous to the still-blossoming arts and theatre neighborhood. A motorist driving on the streets of North Hollywood at around 2:15 this morning saw a body "laying near the curb" close to "the intersection of Satsuma Avenue and Vanowen Street," and made the 911 report, according to the Daily News. The victim, a Hispanic male in his 20s or 30s whose identity is being withheld until his next-of-kin is notified, was apparently struck and killed by a driver who did not remain on scene. Los Angeles police Sgt. Ben Alonso, watch commander at North Hollywood Division notes: ``There were no witnesses. But there are cameras in the area, so we're hoping to get something from them on the driver who fled." Alonso adds: ``There was no marked crosswalk where the victim was hit. So we're not sure what happened yet.'' The corner removed the body about an hour ago, and Vanowen has since been re-opened in the area.

Tonight! Fries On The Side Sketch Show

A lot of what is often missing from sketch shows, as opposed to improv, is that organic moment of discovery. With lines, there’s security and safety... which explains why half the hosts of Saturday Night Live manage to make it through without looking like COMPLETE douches. If you want the dangerous side of scripted live comedy, you’re really going to have to look towards UCB’s show Sketch Cram, where they write and perform the show in only 12 hours. But that’s once a month and is wholly comprised of veteran writers and improvisors. Try doing a live show where you get your lines two hours before the lights go up, your teleprompters are only 50% reliable, and you’ve got a host performer for the evening who may not have ever done a sketch show in their life. And it has to be good. Sweating bullets yet? Good. Welcome to Fries On The Side.

Census Tract 1210.20 has no homeless. That's at least how it was on Tuesday night, the first of three nights of the Los Angeles Homeless Count, which is mandated every two years in order for the LA Homeless Services Authority to keep their federal funding.

Not only has the city made it realistically hard to park and take advantage of the burgeoning theatre district by limiting parking to two hours at night, they are now proposing to take away a crosswalk at a vital intersection that connects dense housing to commercial businesses. Is this redevelopment gone backwards?

Drive-By in Daylight Claims Life of NoHo Teen

It happened yesterday afternoon in broad daylight; 14-year old Baudelio Guadalupe Jara was walking near Cantlay Street and Vineland Avenue, just north of Sherman Way in North Hollywood when he was "killed in an apparent drive-by shooting." The Daily News reports that Jara was fired at by the passenger of a "gray compact car," who issued several shots; the vehicle sped away and was "last seen traveling southbound on Vineland Avenue toward Sherman Way." Although some sections of North Hollywood see some violent activity, the fact that this took place midday is what is particularly striking. Sadly, Jara "had multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries." Police are working to piece together what happened and why, and ask that anyone who knows anything about the incident to call North Hollywood Homicide Detectives at (818) 623-4075 or (877) LAPD-24-7.

New Parking Rates/Times Stir Drama in NoHo Arts District

The LA Department of Transportation refused to sign an agreement to communicate with neighborhood councils, aka the stakeholders, a few years ago. Now you end up with situations like this in the NoHo Arts District with its 30 or so theatres and no longer term public parking garage nearby. Via the LA Times
