NoHo Hows Space Has a New Tenant & it's Not a Grocery Store
Sorry Team Fresh & Easy. And sorry Team Trader Joe's. Your cries for an affordable, trendy, eco-slanted grocery store in the stead of the vacated Hows at the Commons in NoHo will go unanswered. A new tenant is prepping the space for move-in, and the only bring-your-own bag you'll need to tote there is the one filled with your tennis shoes and a padlock. 24-Hour Fitness has begun their renovation, and are aiming for a summertime open, reports North Hollywood Patch.

Fresh & Easy Rumors Continue for HOWS Market NoHo Space
Ever since HOWS Market announced the closure of its NoHo Arts District location, people have been praying for a Fresh & Easy takeover of the space. Fresh & Easy, for their part, have been diligent in not giving any specifics. Last month, a spokesperson said "We’re looking at sites in NoHo, but not that site at this time." Yesterday, the same spokesperson had a variation: "We’re looking at sites in NoHo, but cannot confirm any sites in particular." So now they are not specifically denying the HOWS space. The second statement came after LAist learned from a source that Fresh & Easy is already in talks with J.H. Snyder Company, the Museum Square-headquartered owners and developers of the property.
Will Fresh & Easy Move into HOWS Market's NoHo Space?
With HOWS Market poised to leave the NoHo Arts District, residents and blogs have been abuzz--wishing, hoping, pleading--with the prospect of a possible Fresh & Easy takeover of the space. Michael Higby at the Downtown NoHo Times, citing a "secret inside snoops," says that Fresh & Easy indeed does have plans to move in. But a representative at the company tells LAist in an e-mail that it's not the case, at least not at the moment. "We’re looking at sites in NoHo, but not that site at this time," he wrote. So, at this point, it's anyone's guess.
LAPD Chief Beck on Publicizing DUI Checkpoints: Bring It
On New Year's Eve, LAPD's Valley Traffic Division hosted a party of its own in the NoHo Arts District. Located in the northbound traffic lanes on Lankershim Boulevard next to the Metro Red and Orange line stations was a license and sobriety checkpoint. New Year's revelers found themselves in slower than normal traffic as police stopped every fifth car (and any other suspicious ones) to check for a license and any signs of inebriation.

The NoHo Arts District has over 20 live theatre spaces, but no movie theatre of note nearby. "Laemmle Theatre is working on their architectural drawings and hoping to secure financing to be able to start construction," according to Curbed LA.
New Bus Line will Take Passengers from SCV to NoHo
A new bus line between the Santa Clarita and the NoHo Metro Red/Orange Line stations will begin service next week. This is actually a pretty good idea for the fourth largest city in Los Angeles County as Metrolink trains run between the city and downtown, but only six days a week as opposed to the NoHo Express, which will run everyday. Additionally, this delivers commuters to a transit hub. Service will begin on August 1st with the first two weeks completely free of charge. Then if riders want to ride for the rest of the month for free, they can take an online survey to give feedback on the route. Wow, immediate feedback and evaluation so they can improve service right away? Imagine if all government agencies did that?

LAist wrote about this project last week and readers in the comments section have not been thrilled. A ceremony is scheduled for tonight at 7 p.m.
Take a Tour of Historic North Hollywood This Saturday
Don't buy into the old notion that there's no history in Los Angeles. If anything, our weekly LAistory series will handily prove otherwise. But, fine, don't take our word for it. Why not take some experts' words and get out and about for yourself in the remarkably historic North Hollywood neighborhood, where you can learn about the days when the grounds were swollen with flood waters, the park was instead a massive dried-fruit operation, and Lankershim Boulevard was--okay, well, it was still Lankershim Boulevard, but it had all sorts of different shops and stops.
Counting the Homeless in North Hollywood
Census Tract 1210.20 has no homeless. That's at least how it was on Tuesday night, the first of three nights of the Los Angeles Homeless Count, which is mandated every two years in order for the LA Homeless Services Authority to keep their federal funding.
The Death of a NoHo Arts District Crosswalk
Not only has the city made it realistically hard to park and take advantage of the burgeoning theatre district by limiting parking to two hours at night, they are now proposing to take away a crosswalk at a vital intersection that connects dense housing to commercial businesses. Is this redevelopment gone backwards?
