Tonight legendary Boston-bred alternative rock outfit the Pixies will be taking on a three-night stint at the Hollywood Palladium with local noise-infused rockers No Age (LAist Review, #2) in tow. Equally legendary Akron-based new wave act Devo are poised to conclude a two-night stint at the Henry Fonda Music Box. And, lastly, English electronic act Broadcast will be headlining the Troubadour with none other than Deerhunter front man Bradford James Cox's solo endeavor Atlas Sound. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Bootleg Theater to catch one of LAist's favorite local singer-songwriters Mia Doi Todd.

Equally legendary Akron-based new wave act Devo are poised to take on a two-night stint at the Henry Fonda Music Box. Local indie rockers Silversun Pickups (LAist Review, #2, #3) will not only be headlining LA Weekly's 101 Fest at the Gibson Amphitheatre, but will also be performing special sets for Kia Soul Collective at Siren Studio and Kidrockers at the Echo. And, lastly, experimental Icelandic collective Múm will be gracing the El Rey Theatre with none other than Icelandic indie pop outfit Sin Fang Bous.

At the end of Fucked Up’s powerful, frenetic set, frontman Pink Eyes looks out at the crowd and says something along the lines of “You can say we played the Hipster Woodstock. You can say we play punk rock. One thing I know, my hips are in a state of shock.” It’s actually a fitting summary of last Saturday’s FYF festival - whose crowd is a healthy cross-section of young hipsters, and aging punk rockers with bad hips. I’m not entirely sure of the significance, but there seems to be a poetic irony in the proliferation of teenagers in Black Flag T-shirts and forty-somethings in Vivian Girls T-shirts.

                       

Long lines and food shortages aside, it would be hard to call the FYF Fest anything but a success. Now in it's sixth year, an inspired lineup and a great cause made the "hipster Woodstock" the most successful F-Yeah yet. This week Cleveland-bred industrial rockers NIN will be performing not two, not three, but four farewell shows with Danish rockers Mew and local noise-infused rock outfit HEALTH in tow. Illinois-bred Smashing Pumpkins front man Billy Corgan will be playing to a sold-out crowd at the Hotel Café. And, lastly, the sixth annual F Yeah Fest, which boasts a bevy of artists including: the Black Lips, Tim & Eric, No Age, Lightning Bolt, Lucero, Converge, the Thermals, Glass Candy, Fucked Up, Matt Skiba, Times New Viking, Japanther, Mika Miko, Telepathe, Crystal Antlers, Darker My Love, AA Bondy, Wavves, Dios, Peanut Butter Wolf, the Strange Boys, Ninjasonik, Cold Cave, Har Mar Superstar, Avi Buffalo and Kurt Vile, will be taking place at Los Angeles State Historic Park. And, lastly, local indie rock act Division Day (LAist Review, #2, #3) will be gracing Spaceland with LA-based indie pop outfit and labelmates Bad Veins for this week's edition of Club NME.

              

It may be months late, but Little Radio's weekly Summer Camp series finally returns on Sunday, August 16th, with performances by The Living Things, Har Mar Superstar, and Restavrant as well as DJ sets by Ana Calderon, Daisy O'Dell, and Clifton Weaver. Summer Camp runs every Sunday thereafter until September 20th. "That's three Sundays in August, then 3 more in September," according to Little Radio. "Let's just call it September Camp. New location, new pool, new turf. Same water slide and shennanigans!"

Tonight there will be a tribute to the legendary Swedish pop group ABBA at the Hollywood Bowl. St. Albans-based English rockers the Zombies are poised to grace the Wiltern with none other than the Yardbirds, who are, of course, noted for starting the careers of three of rock's most famous guitarists: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. Terry Lynn & John Hugo will be celebrating Jamaican music, performing songs from 2009's It Was Written at Loft Seven in Downtown. And, lastly, Austin-based instrumental rock outfit Explosions in the Sky (LAist Review, #2) will be performing at the Hollywood Palladium with local noise rockers No Age in tow. But we strongly suggest heading out to the Coliseum in Downtown to catch the final night of the 19th annual Electric Daisy Festival—the largest dance festival in North America, which could feature up to "200,000 dancing feet". LAist favorites Simian Mobile Disco are slated to headline.

Tonight ambient rockers Voices Voices will be performing at the Viper Room with Pop Noir. The football helmet-clad experimental electro outfit known as Anavan will be rocking out at the Echo for this week's edition of Part Time Punks. And, lastly, LA-based indie rockers Divisadero are playing with Daniel Brummel (of Ozma) at All Star Lanes in Eagle Rock for the Bowling & Drinking Club. But we strongly suggest spending the day in the Downtown Area. Around mid-day, in what will be touted as one of its best shows of the year, the Smell is hosting a prominent array of noisy locals, such as No Age (LAist Review, #2, #3), Mika Miko (LAist Review) and Abe Vigoda. And later on in the evening, funk and soul maestros Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings (LAist Review, #2) will be headlining Club Nokia. Neither event should be missed!

December is list-making season. And for us music journalists, it is a time to look back on scores of albums, reflect upon the music and recapitulate our favorites. But this year, just like the last, we took this opportunity to flip that tradition upside down, asking the artists that influenced us what influenced them. Tonight Chicago-based alternative rockers the Smashing Pumpkins will be performing at the Gibson Amphitheatre. LA up-and-comer the Gray Kid is slated to headline Check One Twosday at the Echoplex. We love what we've heard from his forthcoming record, 2009's Free Music. And, lastly, we're just receiving word that Brett Dennen will be the special guest for the Gary Jules show at the Hotel Café. But we strongly suggest catching local noise rockers No Age, who will be playing at the Troubadour with Titus Andronicus. Sunday afternoon in LA has been taken over by matinee performances. We're really excited about Kid Rockers, a wondrous series of shows that aims to bring families and great indie music/comedy together. LA-based indie rockers the Deadly Syndrome and the Afternoons will be playing at the Echo for the kiddies, along with comedians Patton Oswalt and Seth Herzog. You must have a child in hand to gain entrance. Inara George ("bird") and Greg Kurstin ("bee") will be performing a special solo show up the street at Tangier Restaurant in Los Feliz. But for those of you who are looking to enjoy a lazy Sunday afternoon, we suggest you save your energy for the Bigler Benefit Show at the Echoplex. The fundraiser, which features hometown favorites No Age and the Movies, is being held in Michele Bigler's honor. Recently, the artist/local music scene fixture was diagnosed with cancer and, like far too many Americans, does not have health insurance. All proceeds will go towards Bigler's treatment.

Local band No Age recently taped a performance at CBS' Late Late Night with Craig Ferguson scheduled to be aired on October 27. Although, they made it through the taping, they almost didn't because of an Obama t-shirt. Guitarist Randy Randall explains to Stereogum in an e-mail:

There are far too many shows to tend to tonight. First and foremost, experimental musician/producer extraordinaire David Byrne and Brian Eno will be performing together at the Greek Theatre in support of their first collaboration in nearly 30 years, Everything That Happens Will Happen Today. LA locals No Age are slated to tear your ear drums apart at the dingy confines of the Smell. But why see them tonight when you can see them in exciting makeshift venues like the LA River or the Downtown Public Library? Devon Williams, yet another great LA-based musician, will be stopping by Echo Park's egalitarian start-up Echo Curio. The rather palatial Wiltern will be hosting the return of Portland legends the Dandy Warhols. Oddly enough, Brooklyn-based noise rockers A Place To Bury Strangers are set to kick things in motion. Our only recommendation is to make sure you bring ear plugs! And lastly, speaking of noise, we've got Deerhoof at the Avalon with local favorites the Happy Hollows. But we heavily endorse plopping down at Spaceland to enjoy your Friday night. The Henry Clay People will be ringing in their latest effort, For Cheap Or For Free, with an impressive bill of bands, including two of our favorite LA acts: the Parson Red Heads and Le Switch. It'll surely be all things to all people.

After reviewing a few dozen releases this year this is my top ten of reviewed albums plus a few select tracks of items that I went out and hunted down myself. These weren't easy to select out of the great stuff I received so it was a challenge. I'd like to thank the labels and their PR agencies for hunting me down and sending CDs to me. I reviewed everything that I received this year with just a couple of exceptions of items I felt I wasn't qualified to review. [Hint to labels and their agencies: LAist likes getting stuff to review, look for our contact info on the staff page]. In my Top Ten is a band (Tall Pony) that wasn't even signed when I posted the review and I had a few others like that this year but there should haver been more. Also, please note that there are 3 LA bands/groups in my Top Ten (Bitter:Sweet, No Age, The Deadly Syndrome).
