Once again, MySpace is copying the people who copied them copying Friendster better. Seeing the success of Facebook's ability to have widgets, MySpace and Google are teaming up to do something similar. More fire likely. Just like in 2003 where the wildfires struck, had a week lull and hit hard again the first week of November, firefighters are currently preparing for the return of the Santa Anas, expected to start tomorrow night. High heels......

Don't let their 1990's looking website fool you, their season opener next Sunday night has a program of promising music. It may seem weird that the Santa Monica Symphony is playing Edward Elgar's "Pomp & Circumstance March No. 1", usually heard at graduations, but the light piece is actually enjoyable when it's not played for a hour straight while large graduating classes walk down the aisle (that's how long the orchestra had to play......

For the past 16 years, as part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's dedication to making music accessible to the widest possible audience, they have been presenting free neighborhood concerts in the community at churches, community centers and other local venues around Southern California. The series for this year begins this week in San Gabriel. The Latin-flavored program includes Bizet’s Suite No. 1 from Carmen; Falla’s Suite from El amor brujo; Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras No.......

For the second year in a row UC Santa Barbara was ranked the 10th Best Party School by the Princeton Review. In their newly released 2008 edition of The Best 366 Colleges, the university 90 minutes north of LA was the only California school to make the Top 10. The top ranked party school this year was West Virginia University, a school that has made the list seven times in the past 15 years.......

Did you know that the Philippines' No. 1 fast food chain was here in Los Angeles? Well, it is. And with inventive flavor-concoctions and the best named foods around (Yumburger, Chickenjoy) what Jollibee lacks in nutritional value it makes up for in wow-factor. And grease-factor. And indigestion. Beyond the jump, behold the wonders of Jollibee... Jollibee 3821 Beverly Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90041 (323) 906-8617......

Rosie O' Donnell learned a hard lesson this week: Don't mess with the cute, ultra-conservative on The View. There's a reason why Elisabeth Hasselback was a Survivor finalist. She may look all prim, proper and meek, but say anything bad about her bf George W, and she's probably temped to take your eyes out with toothpicks and have them as hors d'oeuvres. Donald Trump be damned--Rosie O'Donnell finally met her match. Today, ABC announced......

An article in the New York Times yesterday says that March is the No. 1 month for distracted workers. Hmm. Really? Though we think holiday Internet shopping in December comes in at a pretty close second, nothing says "blow off work" better than March Madness: Lost productivity from March Madness could cost companies more than $1.2 billion, the consulting firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas estimates. But according to a survey, most companies do not......

It's always fascinating when old media attacks new media, and today's example takes on yours truly, LAist. In a piece about Best Of lists on websites, the New York Times leads with this oddity: "As any media consumer knows, this is the season of the list." First of all, in this, the era of YouTube and TiVo and 54 million blogs, is there really such a thing as a "media consumer"? Isn't everyone a......

It just occured to us that we like the new Paris Hilton single “Stars Are Blind” (Heiress Records/WB) better than the entire new Pearl Jam record cleverly titled "Pearl Jam" (J-Records). Somehow the buying public didn't get the same PJ cd that the critics did, but if you haven't picked it up yet, try Amazon where I understand you can find 122 used & new available from $4.99. But since we don't like Seattle's......

American Idol. Even when it's over, it's never really over. Silver-haired American Idol champion Taylor Hicks (the guy with the mixture of Ray Charles moves and Tourette's Syndrome), was named the No. 1 "Hottest Bachelor" by People Magazine today. Say whaaaat? The 29-year-old Hicks outranked other familiar names like Matthew McConaughey, Nick Lachey, Jake Gyllenhaal, Kenny Chesney, Jamie Foxx, Owen Wilson and even AI's host Ryan Seacrest. Another AI contestant makes it a trifecta......

Buck Owens, Bakersfield's favorite son, passed on yesterday at the age of 76. The Bakersfield Californian has a lengthy obit, including: Owens, born in near-poverty just south of the Texas-Oklahoma border and raised from the age of 8 in the Phoenix area, moved to Bakersfield at age 21, hoping to make it as a club musician. He died the multimillionaire king of a regional radio and media empire, renowned as one of country music’s......

Armageddon must be around the corner. We blame Hollywood. It created the hype around this this whole teen singer-actor-dancer genre. If you can call it that. And now one of Disney's former child stars, Hilary Duff, who's like 17 and eleven-twelveths, has earned her second No. 1 on the Billboard charts. Duff's greatest hits album Most Wanted (Hollywood Records) topped the U.S. album charts last week, selling about 208,000 copies. It debuted at No.......

As everyone expected, USC was voted No. 1 in the preseason AP poll. About the only surprise was Louisville getting one first-place vote. So what does this mean? Usually absolutely nothing. Except for last year it meant the national championship. USC began 2004 as a preseason No. 1, and without a single loss they held onto to the top spot straight through to the BCS Title Game. Some college football pundits were openly saying......

For the first time in over a decade, the Lakers took part in the NBA Draft Lottery. While the ping pong balls didn't bounce LA's way, not all was lost. Much like the NFL Draft, this is a weak class at the top, led by University of Utah player. Andrew Bogut will probably be a solid NBA center, ala Vlade Divac, but that's not the kind of franchise-changing player you hope to get at......

The Dodgers offseason continued on its unusual course today as they officially announecd the signing of JD Drew to a 5-year $55 million contract. We've stated before that it's a little odd that the Dodgers couldn't pony up $2 million more a year to get Adrian Beltre instead of Drew. In reality, after losing Beltre, the Dodgers became desperate for some form of offense and probably felt compelled to overpay for the Boras-represented Drew.......

Terry Melcher, the ultimate California kid, died of cancer last Friday night in Beverly Hills. The Los Angeles Times described him as a "surfin'-era singer, songwriter and recording executive who produced the Byrds' No. 1 hits "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "Turn, Turn, Turn" and co-wrote the Beach Boys' "Kokomo." Melcher provided the template for the Angeleno archtype: the Celebrity Scion who thrived behind the scenes of the entertainment world and made a lasting impact on......

Tired of politics? You'd better get your second wind because local politicos descended on City Hall Monday to file the paperwork for the city wide election on March 8th.
