TV Junkie: 'Nip/Tuck' Series Finale Cuts Deep

TV Junkie: 'Nip/Tuck' Series Finale Cuts Deep

Tonight we sadly mark the end of one of the most over-the-top TV shows to ever make the screen: FX's "Nip/Tuck". Seven seasons of outrageous gore, near pornography, and twisted shenanigans have finally come to an end. MSN has a photo rundown and summary of some of the series' highlights but generally speaking, the show really hit its stride when plastic surgeons Sean McNamara (Dylan Walsh) and Christian Troy (Julian McMahon) moved their practice from South Beach to Los Angeles. more ›

TV Junkie: 'Sons of Anarchy' Finale Write-Up; 'Nip/Tuck' Series Finale Announced; HBO's 'Boardwalk Empire' Set

So what did you think about the "Sons of Anarchy" finale? We thought it was very well played and fully occupied the 90-minute slot but a few of the setups for next season were a little too obvious. [Caution: Spoiler] So they let Ethan Zobelle live and he will undoubtedly seek vengeance on SAMCRO for the death of his daughter; the neo-Nazis are after SAMCRO for the execution of AJ Weston (Henry Rollins); the Mayans are pissed at SAMCRO for the loss of several of their members; and the Irish have taken off with Jax's son; ATF Agent June Stahl really threw the cat among the pigeons in the final half our but the pigeons flew into predictable trajectories. This doesn't detract from what was an excellent season other than a couple slow episodes, but hey, you need to catch your breath every now and then. We look forward to next year! more ›

TV Junkie: 'V' Settles; George Lopez vs. Wanda Sykes

Did any of you tune in to the 2nd episode of "V" last night? We ask because viewership dropped by about 30% from the previous week. Don't get us wrong, we like the series but the drop in ratings made us think a bit more about the program. First of all, they're not really breaking any new ground here and that's fine since the majority of the targeted demographic don't remember the original series at all but we thought there would be more updating to the story other than contemporary babes, hunks, and computer graphics. We'll stay tuned for more but after this we wonder about the remake of the classic and dear-to-our-hearts "The Prisoner", which premieres this Sunday on AMC. more ›

TV Junkie: Tuesday Night Good, not Just for CBS; Pau Gasol to Miami?

TV Junkie: Tuesday Night Good, not Just for CBS; Pau Gasol to Miami?

There was some great TV on last night, with "Sons of Anarchy" continuing to get back on track after some silliness a couple weeks ago. On the more depressing side of things, "Frontline" continued to remind us that we are still riding a unicycle on the precipice of economic disaster. Look forward to more stark details from PBS as Margaret Warner, correspondent for "The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer", is traveling in Pakistan with Secretary of State Hilary Clinton and will be reporting on the region tonight and all this week. more ›

TV Junkie: Buscemi To Do More TV; FX Scoring With 'Sons...' and 'Nip/Tuck'

TV Junkie: Buscemi To Do More TV; FX Scoring With 'Sons...' and 'Nip/Tuck'

Has anyone been watching "Sons of Anarchy" and "Nip/Tuck" on FX? The motorcycle gang drama (see our interview with series creator Kurt Sutter and series star Katey Sagal) seemed to get back on track last night after last week's somewhat scatter-brained and ridiculous plot turns (gang members riding around as back up for the deputy police chief? Randomly shooting up cars without repercussions? etc.). Tonight we have another round of the pseudo-pornographic "Nip/Tuck" which can range from being a pointed indictment of our superficial culture to being an overwrought train wreck of excess. We admit to being a rubbernecker that just can't not watch it. At least FX is presenting some non-pedestrian series and it appears that it's getting viewership as a reward with these programs earning impressive ratings for scripted programming. more ›

TV Junkie: Presidential Address; Finales for 'Leverage' + '10 Items or Less'; TV Viewing Trends; Happy Birthday Abe Vigoda

We have a host of finales tonight but the ones to keep an eye on are Timothy Hutton's "Leverage" (10pm on TNT, pictured right) and John Lehr's "10 Items or Less" (11pm on USA). Of local note, KNBC will be doing a special at 9pm on their historical 60 years of broadcasting in Los Angeles. KNBC helped define the medium of television and is due many accolades for it's services to the community over these 6 decades. more ›

So "American Idol" fans, round three of the Hollywood auditions start tonight - we haven't seen a lot of chatter about this season here at LAist and wondered what your thoughts were. TV Junkie: Super Bowl to Get Movie Ads

TV Junkie: Super Bowl to Get Movie Ads

There's only three weeks to go until the Super Bowl and NBC still has to sell some ads so they're looking to the movie studios to fill up the remaining (10%) of slots. So what we're saying is that at least 1 out of 10 ads will be for a movie, with all the ads adding up to over $200 million for NBC. more ›

TV Junkie: TV Guide Sold; Helvetica Anyone? Also, Nip/Tuck Returns

TV Junkie: TV Guide Sold; Helvetica Anyone? Also, Nip/Tuck Returns

The big news yesterday was that the TV Guide Network was sold for $255 million to Lionsgate, and apparently not sold to investor Allen Shapiro for $300 million as had been announced less than 3 weeks ago. While we're not sure who should be disappointed and who should be elated, what we're sure of is that $255 million seems like a lot of money for a brand as stale as TV Guide. more ›

With even more evidence of the population spending more time with programming and movies online, Lifetime, which I jokingly refer to as the most sexist network on the planet, is now launching programs on the web. If you weren't getting enough reality TV, first verify that you don't have testicles and then check out mylifetime.com and look for "That Magic Moment" which is about couples' first time in the sack and the "Clean Start Challenge” about 10 goody-two-shoes women who are sticking to their New Years' resolutions. more ›

In some TV news with local flavor, Santa Monica-based Ovation, "The Arts Network" (I thought this was Lifetime's tagline?), has announced a series of partnerships with cultural institutions across the country to produce and promote their content and collections. Local organizations include: the LA Opera, Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, and P.S. ARTS. Now if I could only get Ovation on local cable.... more ›

TV Junkie: Tuesday - Idol Is Back

TV Junkie: Tuesday - Idol Is Back

In other news, a desperate NBC has ordered a pilot of the BBC's cars & celebs series, Top Gear. The show has been running on BBC America for a couple years now, I've seen a few episodes, notably one with Ewan McGregor. The show may be amusing depending upon which celebrities they line up, but it's no American Idol. Again, instead of coming up with something original, we're forced to watch rebranded concepts from overseas. more ›

Thankfully I had Tivo'd Sunday's Kenny vs. Spenny and Robot Chicken to watch last night because after the first 15 minutes of Saving Grace I couldn't take any more. Unfortunately I tuned back into SG in time to catch Lem giving Holly Hunter a hand job which was so not worth it. In case you missed him last week, you have a couple more chances to go to a Q&A with writer/creator David Milch at the WGA Theater tomorrow and Thursday from 2:15-4:00pm for FREE. more ›

TV Junkie: Tuesday

I watched Saving Grace last night because there was nothing else on and I was sorry I did it. Holly Hunter I love you but there should be a better show than this for you - it's morphed into Touched By An Angel with touches of profanity. It looks like there's a lot of stuff tonight (below) but it's actually pretty sparse. I'll have some DVD reviews up soon since that's what I'm really watching,... more ›

Hollywood Workers Rally for an End to Writers' Strike

Hollywood Workers Rally for an End to Writers' Strike

About 500 support and production workers marched down Hollywood Boulevard to urge an end to the strike that has paralyzed the movie and television industry. The "Strike a Deal" march brought together workers who are not on strike themselves but who have been laid off or are losing business as a result of the WGA strike, which appears far from over as it enters its sixth week. Today's rally and march -- from Grauman's... more ›

TV Junkie: (Not So) Big Wednesday

Relatively speechless tonight because there's so little on TV and yesterday was pretty lame as well. The final schmaltzy segment of Tin Man aired to much disappointment, and Nip/Tuck started out great but fizzled about halfway through the episode. Tonight though, Tyler Perry actually returns to the show he created and that's a big deal so check TBS at 9:00pm. [Please note how I'm specifically not mentioning the Julia Roberts special on AMC as she... more ›

How can it be Christmas with out Rudolph or hotties in underwear strutting through snowflakes? The previews for this week's Nip/Tuck looked hilarious, I hope it delivers; gonna have to Tivo part three of Tin Man which has been pretty good so far despite certain shortcomings that are particular to the SciFi channel. As always, thanks for your comments. 7:15pm Becket TCM - (1964) Do you remember being forced to watch this in high school... more ›

Just read that one of Sid Caesar's writers, Mel Tolkin, just passed away at age 94, godlove'im. Instead of running vintage Leno re-runs they should be running some of this classic comedy that actually had great writing from way back in the day.
