LAistory: Fatty Arbuckle's Plantation Cafe

After Fatty Arbuckle's career was deep-sixed by one of the biggest scandals of its day, he tried his hands at a few things, not the least of which was Fatty Arbuckle's Plantation Cafe. Built at 11700 Washington Boulevard in Culver City, across the street from the site of Arbuckle's elementary school.

              

Thanks to New Year's hangovers, clubland in January can be sluggish. However, brave weekend warriors can still be found under the disco ball. They know the only way to fight 2008 hangovers is to dance them off in 2009. Nightlife photographer Drew “Rukes” Ressler (we interviewed him last month) was there to catch this nocturnal revelry.

              

When globetrotting electronic dance music DJs come to town the energy is rock-show thick. The tough, loud music. The sparkling visuals along side layers of multicolored flashing lights. The rabid crowd. These elements unite, and fans are delivered something special. Drew “Rukes” Ressler’s job is to capture that nocturnal magic.

The Cahuenga corridor/crawl night spot formerly known as Tokio Lounge is undergoing a complete rennovation and being transformed into Ecco. Using natural and environmentally friendly materials and products, Ecco is calling itself "Hollywood's first eco-friendly lounge."

A Narrative History of the Lightbulb is Catherine Wagner's show, inspired by the Baltimore Museum of Industry's collection of lightbulbs. Wagner chronicle's the evolution of the household object through color Lambda prints. An opening reception is scheduled for tonight.
