It really does seem people just like to foam at the mouth over the most irrelevant things. I understand people being horrified by what happened in Penn State and various LAUSD schools. Being horrified by the Holocaust is also acceptable. There needs to be some gravitas is the things we rise up against. That’s why the furor over MIA and Giselle is perplexing.
Much Ado About Super Bowl Nothings, Then Kobe Makes History
A Tale of Three Teams
The three teams who call STAPLES Center home departed on long road trips because of a culturally irrelevant award show happening next Sunday. For all three it will test the mettle as they try and solidify their playoff credentials. And for those three, there were three different results.
Kings Power Play Win Comes with Some Controversy
That was as close to a walk-off in regulation for the Kings in their 3-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets at home. As the final seconds were ticking off ready to send the game to the inevitable overtime period, Drew Doughty got the fortunate bounce during a power-play and shot the puck past Columbus goaltender Curtis Sanford as the clock hit 0.3 remaining.
Lakers and Ducks Get Lopsided Yet Ho-Hum Wins
After a night where two of the three best teams in the NBA Western Conference matched up and featured a ferocious dunk, somehow Tuesday night was a bit of a breather on the excitement meter in Southern California. Hell, only the last two championship winning teams in Southern California played.
Kings Take a Page from the Lakers Playbook
The Kings and the Lakers have a lot of things in common right now. On Friday night the Lakers shot 19% from the field in a ten-point first quarter of their 92-80 loss to the Orlando Magic, their offensive woes becoming more glaring having only scored in triple-digits once this season. Of course it’s hard to have any offensive continuity when it comprises of only one player.
Kings Burned by Flames in Shootout
As the Kings started their just completed road trip with a Sutter Brothers showdown, they started their four-game home stand with a rematch. While the first matchup was a 4-1 victory for the Kings up in the wasteland of Calgary last week, the rematch was less than inspiring as the Kings lost 2-1 in a shootout.
Kings Refuse to Lose (In Regulation)
Along with Ken Hitchcock of the St. Louis Blues, the only other head coaching change of the seven in the NHL this season that has worked out is Darryl Sutter with the Kings. Along with the Kings’ 3-2 road shootout victory over the Vancouver Canucks Tuesday night, the Kings are now 8-1-5 since Sutter took over the reins on December 20.
Powerful Kings Lose to Dallas in a Shootout, Kopitar Injured
The Kings lost 5-4 in a shootout to the Dallas Stars.
After being down 2-0 in the first period to the Dallas Stars, the Kings buoyed by three power-play goals had taken a 4-3 lead midway through the third period. Yes, you read that correctly: three power-play goals for the first time since March 8, 2010 against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Kings Torch the Capitals
If you were to believe ESPN, the BCS and the folks who live in the South, then you would believe the Kings were the best team in the NHL. Like the two SEC teams fighting for the Mythical Championship in college football, the Kings have a pretty stout defense and are stunted on offense. As I have exhaustingly said almost each time I write about the Kings, they are the worst goal scoring team in the NHL. They’re even worse than the New York Islanders and the Anaheim Ducks. But the Kings bucked the offense-deficient trend trouncing the Washington Capitals 5-2.
It's Getting Ugly at STAPLES Center
In New Orleans the nation watched as the Saints performed an offensive clinic in the second half dispatching the Detroit Lions 45-28 in the wild card round of the NFL Playoffs. That offensive mojo obviously did not visit the STAPLES Center today with the Kings losing in regulation for the first time in the Darryl Sutter era 1-0 to the lowly Columbus Blue Jackets and the Clippers edged the Milwaukee Bucks 92-86.
Doughty's Controversial Goal Mercifully Ends Offense-Deprived Hockey Game
For the 21st time in 23 home games, there was a sold-out crowd of 18,118 fill STAPLES Center to watch the Kings edge the Phoenix Coyotes 1-0 in overtime. Why?
Kings Have a Scoring Problem
It’s no secret that the Kings have a scoring problem. Simply put they have difficulties putting the puck in the net as evidenced by being in the NHL basement in scoring goals. This scoring-itis reared its ugly head again in the Kings 2-1 shootout loss to the Colorado Avalanche.
Kings End 2011 Winning
This was definitely worth staying sober on New Year’s Eve for the first time since I was 16 years old. I was only loaded on coffee, and the only white piles near me were the ice shavings at STAPLES Center. And for the first time this season, the Kings were the team that I envisioned them to be before the season started in their 4-1 beatdown of the Vancouver Canucks under the weighty gaze of Gene Simmons.
Kings Get the Gift of Offense
It’s appropriate that the Kings have worn all black as their home jerseys this season. Their offense has really fallen into a black hole this season with them dead last in goals scored in the NHL.
Kings Are 1-0 in Darryl Sutter Era
For anyone expecting the Darryl Sutter era Kings to be radically different from the Terry Murray era right away, boy was this game against the Ducks a letdown despite the 3-2 shootout victory.
A Simple Sutter To Guide the Kings
I’ve heard many adjectives used to describe new Kings’ head coach Darryl Sutter: intense, fiery, genius, disciplinarian, tyrant. But the one thing I didn’t expect from Sutter was to see someone unassuming.
Kings Lose In Boston for First Time Since 2002
Kings’ fans all across Twitter have been salivating for months, if not years, for this moment. They finally get a Kings’ game without Terry Murray behind the bench. Be careful what you wish for - you just might get it. The Kings certainly did get it: a beatdown at the hands of the Boston Bruins 3-0 in the Garden.
Kings Fire Terry Murray, Now What?
Here’s the final sentence I wrote after the Kings’ 2-1 loss to the Dallas Stars on Saturday: “The Kings are a disappointment, and if they’re not careful they might wind up like the Ducks.” Fast-forward two days later, and here they are.
Extra, Extra: Akbar Has a Birthday, The Palins Want Another TV Show, and The Kings are Leaderless
In tonight's Extra, Extra, Silver Lake's Akbar celebrates a birthday, the Palins pursue yet another reality show, and L.A.'s NHL team finds themselves without a coach. Plus: Keep up with us on Facebook, and follow us on Twitter: @LAist @LAistFood @LAistSports.
The Kings Are a Big Disappointment
I can’t take it anymore. I spent most of 2011 watching the Dodgers stink it up at the Ravine, and now here I sit in the coldest arena in the country watching the Kings stink it up on the ice.
Kings Can't Tame Wild Sports Day
The Kings continued the strange day of sports in Los Angeles in their 4-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild.
Kings Overcome Injuries, Chase Panthers For Victory
Sometimes a team loses in the long run despite winning a particular game. Thanks to injuries to Willie Mitchell and Mike Richards in the game, the Kings look like the losers on the ice despite their 2-1 victory over the rarely seen Florida Panthers.
Kings Shot Mentality Pays Off Against Sharks
It’s amazing what a simple concept like shooting the puck towards the net can do for a team. The Kings finally got a victory against one of the upper echelon teams on the Western Conference with a 2-0 shutout win against the San Jose Sharks.
LAst Night's Action: Ducks Still Can't Win
Toronto Maple Leafs defeat Anaheim Ducks 5-2. After Francois Beauchemin gave the Ducks the 1-0 lead, in a span of 19 seconds the Maple Leafs went from tying the game on a Tyler Bozak power-play goal to getting the lead by Clarke MacArthur thanks to a sloppy turnover by the Ducks.
LAst Night's Action: USC Beats Pac-12 South Champion
USC Trojans defeat UCLA Bruins 50-0. So there you saw the Pac-12 South Champions get their asses handed to them by the team that ends the season in first place in the Pac-12 South. Thanks to the NCAA, that sentence is not only factual but completely logical. Go figure.
Kings Just Aren't That Good
The Kings just aren’t that good. They’re good, but they’re not in that upper echelon of Western Conference teams like the Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Blackhawks, San Jose Sharks and Vancouver Canucks especially since they’ve yet to record a win against those four teams so far this season.
LAst Night's Action: No Blues for the Kings
Mike Richards with a goal and an assist helps lead the Kings to their fifth victory in seven games. Jonathan Bernier in his first start since Nov. 8 gave up a shaky goal in the first shot of the game. But he recovered to save 23 shots including 14 in the second period.
LAst Night's Action: Kings Sweep Home-and-Home Against Ducks
Perhaps the Ducks’ success in Los Angeles Wednesday night was due to goaltender Jonas Hiller. Against Dan Ellis in the pipes, the Kings got two five-on-five goals, two short-handed goals and a power-play goal en route to their 5-3 win over the Ducks. And for the very first time, the Kings have defeated the Ducks on consecutive nights.
Kings Shoot Out the Ducks
In a night in the NHL that saw a lot of lopsided games, this first game of the Freeway Faceoff had all the makings of such. The Kings outshot the Ducks 37-24, a season-high 17 coming in the first period alone. But there everyone was in the seventh round of the shootout finally exhaling when Justin Williams scored and Kurtis Foster missed giving the Kings the 2-1 victory.
Kings Explode for Terry Murray's 1,000th NHL Game as Head Coach
The Kings’ game against the Minnesota Wild didn’t look anything like how I thought it would look. The fact is this was a showdown between two of the most boring offenses in the NHL, a sort of SEC matchup if you will. And judging by the Kings recent performances, things didn’t look good.
