LAst Night's Action: Unbeaten Saunders Lifts Halos
LA Angels (17-11) over Oakland A's (17-11) 2-0. While a lot has been said about Brandon Webb, Jake Peavy and Chien-Ming Wang, Joe Saunders (5-0) has been lights out with little fanfare. Saunders pitched an eight-inning shutout giving up four hits and five strikeouts. Francisco Rodriguez notched a league-high 11th save despite walking the lead-off man Mark Ellis and the Big Hurt. Meanwhile for the A's Greg Smith (2-1) pitched a strong complete game despite the loss.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Dump Nuggets
LA Lakers defeat Denver Nuggets 122-107. Kobe Bryant showed his MVP colors scoring 49 points to go along with 10 assists. Despite that, the Lakers are starting to play with fire. With a defense as porous as a sieve and complacency of taking bad perimeter shots against a weak zone, the Lakers got away with one. True the Lakers got the win, but it should have been a more dominant showing. It didn't help Lamar Odom scored only four points sitting out most of the second half due to foul trouble. While it might not affect them in this series, these mental lapses can cost them in the second round series against the Utah Jazz. The Lakers lead the series against the Nuggets 2-0.
LAst Night's Action: And Just Like That the Dodgers Go Cold
Cincinnati Reds (9-12) defeat LA Dodgers (8-12) 8-1. After getting 15 hits yesterday, the Dodgers decide to be generous and give up 15 hits. Starter Hong-chih Kuo (0-1) was awful making 80 pitches in 3 2/3 innings giving up five runs. Meanwhile Red's young starter Edinson Volquez (3-0) went seven innings giving up one run on three hits.
Goin' Pro
Surprising nobody, USC's All-American wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett announced that he will forgo his final year of eligibility and enter the NFL Draft. The 6'5" Jarrett had an especially strong second half of the 2006 season, after healing from a shoulder injury, and set the Pac-10 record for career touchdowns (41 touchdowns in 38 games) while becoming USC's all-time receptions leader with 216 catches for 3,138 yards. He crowned his college career by winning the...
Surprised Trojans Fall in the Draft
The NFL Draft produced the usual drama and surprises. Starting with the fall of Reggie Bush to number two after the announcement by the Houston Texans that they signed North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams to a 6 year $54 million deal...jeez.
Everybody Loves Raymond
Much like the NFL Draft, this is a weak class at the top, led by University of Utah player. Andrew Bogut will probably be a solid NBA center, ala Vlade Divac, but that's not the kind of franchise-changing player you hope to get at No. 1.
