CHP on NYE: Less Fatalities, More DUI Arrests than Last Year

The California Highway Patrol has released their figures following New Year's Eve and New Year's morning, and while the number of fatal accidents is lower than last year, there were more arrests made, according to an AP report published on abc7. There were "five fatal vehicle accidents" reported, which is "five fewer than last year," claiming five lives--of which one was a pregnant woman. However, the CHP "made 527 DUI arrests between New Year's evening and morning 2010, compared to 438 in 2009." Locally, the LAPD had several checkpoints set up to check for possible DUI conditions during the holiday and will continue to do so this and other weekends. more ›

Come New Year's Eve, motorcross superstar Travis Pastrana will attempt to break the world record for longest jump in a car. He plans on jumping 171 feet from a pier in Long Beach Harbor onto a barge. "Everyone always jokes about launching off a pier and Red Bull was able to pull it together where we have a barge to land on, which I think is going to be absolutely insane," he told the Long Beach Press-Telegram. A twenty-something man was shot and killed outside a hillside home off Coldwater Canyon Blvd. early this morning in Studio City, the LA Times is reporting. A New Year's Eve party at a large rented house on the 3900 block of Avenida de Sol was winding down as the shooting occurred around 4 a.m. more ›

First Reported Homicide of the Year at the Hands of LAPD

A man reportedly "firing shots into the air and threatening his family during a holiday party" was shot and killed by LAPD Officers early this morning. Around 12:30 a.m., officers arrived at the party, evacuated the attendees and searched the Panorama City residence for the suspect. It was two hours before they found a man in a garage crawl space. "The man was armed, and three officers opened fire, according to preliminary reports" reported the LA Times. "Police did not say whether the man also shot his weapon, pending an LAPD investigation of the officer-involved shooting." (For clarification: homicide is a human killing a human and does not indicate a criminal murder). more ›
