Contemporary Dance: Meg Wolfe Shakes It Up @ REDCAT
An ex-New Yorker and now almost an institution in today's local concert dance scene, the creative mover and shaker Meg Wolfe whirls into the Roy and Edna Disney Cal Arts Theater on Thursday for a weekend of performances of her newest work, trembler.SHIFTER.
Looking and Listening: Lucinda Childs @ Royce
This weekend, UCLA Live is presenting one of the classic postmodern dances choreographed by Judson Church movement pioneer Lucinda Childs at Royce Hall. Created in collaboration with visual artist Sol Lewitt and (at the time emerging) music composer, Phillip Glass, the full length work for eight dancers premiered in 1979 and was considered to be a “breakthrough” in dance by respected critic Alan Kriegsman of the Washington Post.
NOW Fest at REDCAT is Back, Opens Tomorrow
The seventh annual New Original Works Festival opens Thursday at REDCAT, our city’s center for cutting edge and experimental performing arts. Housed below the statuesque Disney Hall, the festival runs for three weekends and showcases the work of eight adventurous local artists in music, theater, dance and multimedia, with mixtures of all the arts abounding.
111 Bicycles to Perform Tonight at Zipper Hall
When Monday Evening Concerts organizer Justin Urcis told us that tonight's performance outside Zipper Hall was unique, he wasn't kidding. Mauricio Kagel's 1996 composition, Eine Brise (‘A Breeze’), is an avant-garde histrionic work for 111 bicycles. At about 8:40 p.m. during intermission concert goers will head towards the sidewalk outside of Zipper Hall on Grand Avenue to watch and hear the performance of cyclists whizzing by whistling and playing bells. Tickets are $27 for a ticket, but you're welcome to just watch the sidewalk portion for free. In 2007, LAist claimed the Monday Evening Concert series as the "King of New Music" in Los Angeles. That sentiment still holds true today. blogdowntown has more details about the 222-wheeled performance.
REDCAT Opens NOW 2nd Program
The second program in REDCAT’s sixth annual New Original Works Festival is brimming with things rarely seen before. This week (only), two interdisciplinary artist collaborations inhabit the basement of Disney Hall and, as the theater’s executive director, Mark Murphy says, “I can’t wait to see the results!”
Innovative media artist Carole Kim collaborates with award winning choreographer/dancer Oguri, percussionist/composer Alex Cline and
Performance Review: NOW Program 3
The closing program of the fifth annual New Original Works Festival (NOW) ended this weekend at REDCAT with a trio of works-in-progress. Composer Anne LeBaron with librettist Douglas Kearney, choreographer Rosanna Gamson and performance artist Kristina Wong presented excerpts from projects they’re currently working on in all their not-fully-edited, let’s try this, and I-wonder-if-this-belongs-here glory.
Concert Review: Billy Joel @ Honda Center, 2/23/08
I’m not ashamed to admit that somewhere among my Jon Brion, Of Montreal and Vampire Weekend albums, you’ll find a bunch of Billy Joel CDs. Although I wasn’t even born when he first hit the airwaves, I’ve always had a soft spot for his music. Since I didn’t get to see him perform during the days when he was releasing and performing new music, I was excited for the opportunity to see him Saturday night in Anaheim.
RocknRollDating.com: Find Love Through the Love of Music
RocknRollDating.com is the creation of Eagle Rock resident and music industry veteran, Daniel House. He has created the free online dating site with music as the coming-together concept. Put in your favorite bands and concerts, your preferred genres and the normal dating profile stats such as heights, sex, etc. and go find your mate based on the tunes you share in common. Or maybe you'll find someone who will let you experience new music.
Sole to Rock The Knitting Factory This Friday
Sole is a badass, a rapper, a visionary, and this Friday he will be the dopest show to check out in town. Sole is often best known for his solo work with Anticon, and did a killer interview with us back in July, but will be killing it with his new music-homies the Skyrider Band. So like they recorded this self-titled album, and its smokin-good.
Classical Picks of the Week: 20th Centuries
As the year enters week two, organizations are programming newer music, that which was composed in the last century. This weekend, the Los Angeles Philharmonic began their Concrete Frequency series to an excellent start wth Aaron Copland's "The City" played to film and Edgard Varèse's "Amériques." After the concert, hip-hop violinist duo Paul Dateh and inka one (we interviewed Paul him this summer) played in the lobby by the cafe while Breakestra funked up the BP Hall.
Indian Jewelry's Top Ten of 2007
I've always been intrigued by other "best of" lists, but this year I decided to take it to a whole new level. I e-mailed a handful of bands that I've seen this past year in order to unearth what exactly captivated them in '07. As music listeners, it is our duty to take a keen interest in our favorite musician's influences. After all, they rocked our little world, might as well see what rocked their little world. Therefore, this is an act of paying it forward to those hardworking, underpaid musicians who truly made a difference within the music scene this year.
LAist's Lindsay's Top Ten Albums of 2007
Everybody's doing it, right? I don't pretend to be hip or edgy or rebellious. I mean, I grew up on Billy Joel and Madonna and Motown and then the Gen Xer's basic dichotomy of KROQ versus Top 40 in the 90s. I find it increasingly harder to fall in love with albums in the downloading age, and am one of those people who obsessively compiles mixed cds for friends and iPod playlists full of individual tracks from a broad sampling of artists. The three places I'm most thankful for getting me turned on to new music would be my fellow LAisters, the awesome site 3hive, and good ol' KCRW. So without further ado, here are my pics for the 2007 releases I most enjoyed:
Monday Evening Concerts: King of New Music
If you like classical new music, then why aren't you coming to Monday Evening Concerts? This is the real deal and a one of the kind music series in Los Angeles. Last Monday night's concert was our Classical Pick of the Week and there was good reason for it. The nearly sold out concert of the young and elderly gathered at Zipper Hall at Downtown's Colburn School of Music. The night started with the...
LAist Interview: Debbie Harry
Listen to the interview here: Deborah Harry is on her way to LA to play the Music Box at the Henry Fonda Theater tomorrow, Friday the 7th. She's got her first new solo album in fourteen years out, Necessary Evil, and you can hear some samples of it at her MySpace. Unfortunately our conversation sounds like I'm contacting her by sat-phone somewhere in Tibet but these are the days of multiline patch-ins so it couldn't...
Vegoose Music Festival, Las Vegas, 10/27-10/28 Pt. 1
This past weekend, Vegas's own Sam Boyd Stadium was home to the 3rd annual Vegoose music festival which featured a few small-time bands you may have heard of, like Rage Against the Machine, Daft Punk, Muse, Iggy and the Stooges, LAist made the obligatory road trip out to Sin City to bring you some coverage on one of the more succsessful new music fests, (which, by the way, is brought to us by the same people who put on Bonnaroo.) Check out some costumes and environmental shots after the jump, and stay tuned for some interviews, vids, and band pics later this week!
Classical Picks of the Week: The California EAR Unit & Southwest Chamber Music
Southwest Chamber Music The season opening concert will feature Southwest Chamber Music’s percussionist Lynn Vartan, the Grammy-nominated Tambuco Percussion Ensemble (an LAist pick of the week earlier this summer) and the soloists of Southwest Chamber Music in a colossal program of the "Encounters, part 1" by one of Los Angeles’ most important composers and percussionists William Kraft, who was an LA Phil member (percussion, timpani), composer-in-residence, and conductor for three seasons. Monday, October 15 @...
Morning Becomes Eclectic 30th Anniversary Interviews: Liza Richardson
When Chris Douridas moved from Dallas to take over "Morning Becomes Eclectic" at KCRW, his first hire was Liza Richardson. Liza's had a varied career at the station, hosting multiple shows over the years and her musical choices are as varied as her resume. She currently hosts Saturday night's "The Drop" from 9pm to midnight. She specializes in underground music and limited releases on vinyl. Continuing our series on the occasion of the 30th anniversary...
The Boss to bring Magic to LA in October
That faint murmur you heard this morning weren't boos. It was three guys quietly saying "Bruuuuuce" to themselves as they heard that Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will return to LA on Oct. 28 to a venue to be named later. The Boss has seem out of sorts since Born in the USA, churning out mopey, cheesy middle of the road forgetables. Even the 9/11-inspired The Rising didn't hold a candle to...
Listen to the New Rilo Kiley, Be a Critic for LAist
Rilo Kiley played their first concert in two years the other day and LAist was there. Rilo Kiley is now streaming their new cd Under the Blacklight on their Myspace this weekend, and here we are telling you about it. But we're sure that there's more new music that we should be telling the kids about. And we're pretty sure that you might be holding on to that information that we need so badly....

This Week in Classical Picks: Beethoven's 9th
We all have heard Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 (in D minor, Op. 125 "Choral"), mostly in sound bytes, mostly the 'Ode to Joy' theme. But have you really heard it? Have you sat through the whole thing sucking in the craziness? Have you been there live? Have you? Have you? Simply put, it's simply amazing. This is rock and roll folks. Beethoven's 9th! Tuesday, July 31, 2007, 8:00 PM Hollywood Bowl 2301 N. Highland Avenue...
Get rid of advertising on the LA Times front page. Replace it with a new music CD
Patrick Goldstein has a great idea. Replace advertising on the LA Times front page with a CD full of new music. Given that the recorded music business is pretty much over, and that exposure via film, TV and concerts is the primary revenue source for musicians outside of publishing assets for bands that write their own material, this seems like a pretty good idea. Talk to Prince. He has sold tens of millions of...
The Tuss - new material from Richard D. James (AFX)
One of my primary goals when I started working in the music business was to, some day, meet with somebody from Warp Records. As an eager newbie DJ in 1990, I was fortunate enough to discover this label through a couple of releases that helped form my sensibilities in a way that was so profound that it endures to this day. Coco Steele & Lovebomb's "You Can't Stop the Groove" and Power Pill's "Pac...
