Alternative 9/11 Plans: Head to the Hollywood Bowl to See The National, Neko Case, and Sharon Van Etten

Without a doubt, Sunday September 11th is going to be a day where most of the nation's attention is focused on remembering the tragedy of ten years ago. While there are several local events planned to mark the somber anniversary, the show must--and will--go on for Angelenos. Few things exemplify summer in L.A. like an evening at the Hollywood Bowl, so that's where we're headed Sunday night. more ›

LAist Film Calendar: Anniversaries Aplenty: Temple, Blair, Sirk & Priscilla...of Doom!

You're once, twice, three times an Indy...and I loooooove you! Temple of Doom turns 25 this year, and serves itself up every day this weekend. Friday, Temple's a la carte at Cafe Minuit Fairfax, Sunday nets you a side of Raiders at the New Bev, or an organic Indy combo (hold the cubic zirconium) Saturday at the Aero! Surprisingly, not a single guest is in sight (come on, what's Short Round really up to these days?) - for that one must turn 50, as with Douglas Sirk's Imitation of Life. Academy-nominated starlets Susan Kohner & Juanita Moore reminisce over a ravishing new film print, joined by Kohner's son, Paul Weitz. Or you just need to be associated with The Blair Witch Project; directors, producers & the entire cast are set to celebrate the film's 10th anniversary at the Egyptian. Probably the only way they could fill the theater. more ›

Neko Case at the Greek Theatre on Friday and the 31st Annual Playboy Jazz Festival Saturday and Sunday at the Hollywood Bowl reminded us of how much we appreciate the summer outdoor concert season. more ›

Tonight In Rock: Neko Case, Jon Brion, Robert Francis, Love Is All

Tonight local multi-instrumentalist/producer extraordinaire Jon Brion (LAist Interview, #2, Review) is poised to jam with friends at Largo at the Coronet. LA's other prominent and prepossessing singer-songwriter Robert Francis (LAist Interview, Review) will be playing at Spaceland with Kenan Bell to benefit local taco truck Taco Zone, which was recently set ablaze. Gothenburg's own indie rockers Love Is All will be performing at the Echoplex with Shark Toys in tow. But we strongly Virginia-bred alternative country songstress Neko Case will be performing at the Greek Theatre with Grandaddy front man Jason Lytle. more ›

Week In Rock: Neko Case, The Tragically Hip, Patrick Wolf, Nosaj Thing

This week Virginia-bred alternative country songstress Neko Case will be performing at the Greek Theatre with Grandaddy front man Jason Lytle. Canadian rockers the Tragically Hip are poised to take on a three-night stint at the Troubadour. South London-based singer-songwriter Patrick Wolf will be gracing the Roxy in Hollywood. And, lastly, local electronic mastermind Nosaj Thing is ringing in his debut disc, 2009's Drift, at the Airliner in Lincoln Heights. more ›

Tonight In Rock: Jimmy Eat World, Neko Case, Gillian Welch, Eliot Lipp

Tonight Mesa-based indie rockers Jimmy Eat World will be performing their 2001 tour de force Clarity in its entirety to a sold-out crowd at Club Nokia. Cultish San Diegan rock outfit No Knife are set to open the show. As mistakenly noted prior, bluegrass troubadour Gillian Welch will be jamming with her longtime musical partner Dave Rawlings at Largo at the Coronet. And, lastly, Brooklyn-by-way-of-LA electronic mastermind Eliot Lipp is slated to grace the Dakota Live Music Lounge in Santa Monica. But we strongly suggest heading over to Amoeba Records on Sunset to catch ruddy-haired country songstress Neko Case. more ›

TV Junkie: Give Fallon Time; Models vs. 'Lost' & 'Damages'

Critics are being rather forgiving of Jimmy Fallon's (only slightly shaky IMHO) "Late Night" debut: they brought out DeNiro who is always a tough interview and Fallon kind of made it work, and Timberlake kind of saved the first show - not sure why they had Van Morrison on, are they trying to reclaim the age 55-and-up demographic? more ›

Audra Mae @ Silverlake Lounge, 6/10/08

Audra Mae @ Silverlake Lounge, 6/10/08

Local singer/songwriter Audra Mae played a highly impressive set Tuesday night at the Silver Lake Lounge. Simply put, the girl has heavenly pipes. The bio on the myspace describes her voice as a cross between Patsy Cline and Janis Joplin, which is no light praise, but it really is the best description. Having caught a good show a couple years ago, with just her and a guitar, it was fun to see the difference that time and a full band of excellent musicians can make. more ›

Neko Case @ Walt Disney Concert Hall, 11/16/07

"It's so nice and quiet and beautiful in here... from here the lighting kinda looks like a Cylon from Battlestar Galactica." -- Neko Case, melting the heart of every geek in the house while taking in the mysterious angles and lighting inside the Frank Gehry-designed concert hall. Neko Case closed out the first half of Walt Disney Concert Hall's 2007-08 Songbook Series last Friday to a rapt, grateful, near-sellout audience of about 2,000. The... more ›

Be the Next New Pornographer and Win

A.C. Newman and Blaine Thurier of Vancouver's finest supergroup, The New Pornographers, have issued a challenge: Translation: Make a better video than the band can, put it on YouTube, and win an iPhone... or something. (We're wondering if that "something" might include signed Neko Case undergarments, as recent history reminds us that even her used corset is worth as much as an iPhone. The New Pornographers admit that they're not OK Go when it comes... more ›

Grand Ole Opry Revival in Hollywood

(l-r): Billy Bob Thornton, Marty Stuart, Porter Wagoner, and Dwight Yoakam perform a surprise set before Neko Case @ The Henry Fonda Theatre. Photo courtesy Ice Cream Man. For the first time in recent history, Hollywood was rattled by bonafide foot-stomping. Many in the audience at the Music Box last night had no idea what was taking place when Neko Case announced Porter Wagoner's intention to take over Hollywood. But a historic buzz took... more ›

Colin Meloy of Decemberists' Top 10 CDs of '06

Colin Meloy might look like just another guy in line at Radio Shack, but he knows no fear. After being called out by Stephen Colbert on the Colbert Report for utilizing his trademarked Green Screen effect, Meloy upped the ante -- and on December 20th on Comedy Central, we will all benefit from the “Decemberists vs. Stephen Colbert Guitar Solo Challenge.” more ›

Around the World with the other Ists

Around the World with the other Ists

Torontoist immediately wins our heart by using the word "Jackass" in a headline. In fact, we love their use of it so much that we're going to use it as much as possible throughout this post. For example, it looks like there are Toronto-area jackasses besides those who misuse the sidewalk: look at the crap on sale on Toronto's craigslist. But it looks like Toronto doesn't contain the kind of jackasses who pee in public pools, as the issue never came up when they interviewed the creators of art installations in their public wading pools. more ›
