How is it that every Pixar film is an absolute gem, yet every other animated movie from every other large American studio is just okay? Oh right -- John Lasseter. I watched The Wizard of Oz plenty of times when I was a kid, and I admire it as an important film in the American film canon...but...would I ever watch it again? Probably not. Man, Jennifer Aniston just can't seem to pick good movies in which to star, huh? Management was a dud despite the presence of the great Steve Zahn (see him in Rescue Dawn and Safe Men). Away We Go has more of an Eggers feel to it than a Mendes stamp, huh? Does anyone not like John Krasinski?

There’s a new game in town. Accomplice: Hollywood mixes elements of mystery dinner theater (minus the fromage factor), scavenger hunts and improv to make for an afternoon of surprises dotted throughout Hollywood Boulevard.
Following his well-received gig as host of the Tony Awards in New York earlier this year, actor Neil Patrick Harris has been booked as the host of the upcoming 61st Primetime Emmy Awards. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences made the official announcement today, confirming speculation that the onetime Doogie Howser, MD wunderkind and current How I Met Your Mother star, will be the telecast's emcee. Viewers and attendees can expect the unexpected from the versatile performer. Said Harris of the impending hosting duties: "I'm looking forward to the challenge of the show — adding my own voice to it, while honoring the nominees and the entire year in television. But which voice to choose? I'm torn between gangsta, foppish Brit, and robot. Really proud of my robot. We'll see what happens on the night." Emmy noms will be announced Thursday; the show is September 20th at the Nokia Theatre.
D3 Publisher is an L.A.-based video game company that just seems to know what’s up. By refusing to pigeonhole themselves into any particular genre, the developers have projects that range anywhere from cartoon franchise spin offs to sexy heroine hack n’ slashers, all of which cater to any and all gamers alike. Perhaps best known for their intergalactic-themed Puzzle Quest series, D3 is churning out a few fun titles that simply shouldn’t be overshadowed.
Bound to happen, right? Nevertheless, it's pretty funny.

In a bit of a surprise, the surrogate pregnancy comedy target audience forgot that the movie was opening and spent their weekend eating a family-size bag of Doritos.
I think it will be hard for Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay to replicate the success of the original seems bigger, more absurd and ultimately less funny. Still, I'll be there. Probably a little buzzed, too.

Tickets ($40, $80 and $150) to the show are available to the general public. If those ticket prices are too steep, then check out our...
A Word or 73: Was sad to learn of the death of Larry "Bud" Melman aka Calvert DeForest who spent over 20 years as a regular on David Letterman's shows - always able to suffer indignities and deal with situations that exceeded Punk'd and Jackass in terms of humor and sophistication by decades. Fox lostsome couple slots in the top 5 last week: American Idol got 1&2, followed by GRey's Anatomy, Deal or No...
Last night, about 15 miles west of the Kodak Theatre -- a veritable light year -- Taylor Dayne and Doogie Howser starred in film awards gala skits of their own. Little Miss Sunshine took Best Picture, Director, and Supporting Male honors at Film Independent's Spirit Awards. Half Nelson took consolation for losing Best Picture by capturing Best Male (Ryan Gosling) and Best Female Lead (Shareeka Epps) awards. And America Ferrera set the bar for Oscar...
Neil Patrick Harris of Doogie Howser, M.D. and Jason Segel of Freaks & Geeks sing "Confrontation" from Les Miserables on The Megan Mullally Show. And you wonder why her talk show was cancelled.
Remember the college application question that asked if you could have dinner with anyone – who would it be? The standard answers included Jesus, grandparents, Abe Lincoln, etc. But we skipped that question and chose another because we couldn’t think of anyone interesting enough, at age 17 anyway, to keep our attention span during the dinner hour. But now we’re older and wiser, living in LA and addicted to the TV shows constantly stored...

The Museum of Television & Radio’s annual William S. Paley Television Festival hosted the cast and creators of CBS’s sitcom How I Met Your Mother at the Directors Guild last night in Hollywood. LAist has grown to really enjoy this show, the likeable characters and the crisp writing. Besides, what other network sitcoms are we going to watch? Rodney? Nope. The King of Queens? Not a chance.
Billed as the next Friends, the new CBS comedy How I Met Your Mother made its debut on Monday night. But there is a big difference between the two shows: Friends focused on the relationships between six likeable friends in New York, while Mother has just only five. (And for a city as diverse as New York, the cast is all still pretty vanilla. Likeable, but we're just sayin'.)
