Filthy Talk For Troubled Times was Neil LaBute's first produced play, and while it has moments that point to the playwright he has since become, overall it's crude in an uninteresting way. City Garage, however, has managed to make a weak play demonstrably worse.
Iffy Early Neal LaBute Play Gets a Poor Rethink at City Garage

The show features nine short one-act plays from nine distinguished and notable playwrights including Jeffrey Hatcher, Jordan Harrison, Moises Kaufman, Joe Keenen, Neal LaBute, Wendy McLeod, Jose Rivera, Paul Rudnick, and Doug Wright. A rotating cast that changes each week performs each piece as a staged reading.
Vs. Theatre Company Rides the Lightning With "The Mercy Seat"
The Mercy Seat is often referred to as Neil LaBute's "9/11 play," and while this is technically true, the events of 9/11 are not really what this play is about. It's actually a serious drama about a relationship in crisis, a struggle for dominance in the guise of a love story. The fact that this 2002 work is only now receiving its L.A. premiere is surprising, but it could hardly have had a better production than the one it gets from the Vs. Theatre Company, which positively growls with the caustic brilliance of its performances.
Box Office Review: Welcome to Lakeview Terrace--now die!
Samuel L. Jackson continues to prove he's at least a decent box-office draw as his presence lifted the rote thriller was expected to do just okay business which is pretty much what it did ($8M).
Weekend Movie Guide: Stay At Home!
Lakeview Terrace looks like such a rote, phony thriller that it's hard to imagine a decent (albeit declining) director like Neil LaBute being able to do much with it. Then again, it's probably Oscar-worthy compared to tripe like My Best Friend's Girl. Is there still an audience for Dane Cook? The Duchess looks like just another wan costume drama after the fiery and robust . Keira Knightly really needs to stop doing these things. Anyone else getting an overpowering TNT vibe from Appaloosa?
