Yesterday was not only Veterans Day but the kick-off game for the NCAA season.
The Navy and NCAA came together to celebrate both veterans and basketball (despite the NBA lockout).

Kill the NCAA: College Football Schedule Week 1
One day away from the start of the college football season and iniquities of powerhouse programs dominate the headlines.
BCS 1, USC 0: Trojans Stripped of 2004 Title
Sorry, Trojans. Your team has been stripped of its 2004 Bowl Championship Series title. The announcement came today, according to the Daily News. The 2004 season will simply have no champion. The decision by BCS officials is not likely a surprise to the University of Southern California or their fans, as the team knew they were in jeopardy of having the title yanked after being "hit with heavy NCAA sanctions last year for rules violations committed during the 2004 and '05 seasons."
Madness: UCLA Survives, UCSB Fizzles
Day one of the NCAA Men's Basketball tournament offered up a few upsets and nearly marked the departure of all local entries as UCLA nearly gave away its ticket to the second round, squandering a massive lead to Michigan State.
Malcolm Lee (16 points), Tyler Honeycutt (pictured, 16 points), and Reeves Nelson (12 points, 10 rebounds) led a balanced UCLA attack. Center Joshua Smith added 14.
March Madness: Get Ready to Play
March Madness is here. And no, we're not talking about Charlie Sheen. It's tournament time, sports fans. And whether or not you're truly a college basketball fan, you'll only have 3 days next week to fill out your brackets between Sunday night, when the round of 64 is announced and Thursday morning when half of your office is empty and everyone's at the bar and not just because its St. Patrick's Day.
Revenge of the Nerds: Caltech Wins!
The Caltech Beavers won its first conference basketball game since 1985 last night, narrowly edging out the Occidental Tigers in the final game of the 2010-11 season.
The victory marked the end of a 310-game losing streak for the Beavers.
How Is Cam Newton Eligible?
Before I post anything here, I try and make sure I understand everything fully. But I really need your help this time around. I don’t understand how Auburn quarterback Cam Newton is an eligible student-athlete. On Wednesday, a day after Auburn ruled that Newton was ineligible and filed a request for reinstatement to the NCAA, the NCAA ruled that Newton was eligible.
NCAA Releases Findings and Sanctions against USC [Updated]
Paul Dee, former University of Miami athletic director and current head of the infractions committee, announced the findings and penalties to the USC football and basketball programs. "This case strikes at the heart of the principles of amateurism," Dee led off his statement.
Reggie Bush Releases Statement
Current New Orleans Saints and former USC running back Reggie Bush released a statement regarding the NCAA sanctions on USC: "I have a great love for the University of Southern California and I very much regret the turn that this matter has taken, not only for USC, but for the fans and players.
I am disappointed by [Thursday's] decision and disagree with the NCAA's findings..."
College Sports Upheaval Begins
USC notwithstanding, the landscape of college sports has begun to change. The Pac-10 announced on their website they are now the Pac-11 with the addition of the University of Colorado Buffaloes. The next expected move will be the Nebraska Cornhuskers to the Big 10 as early as tomorrow. Expected to join Colorado to the Pac-10 are Texas, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. Like the USC story, more to come later as the story develops.
USC Imposes Sanctions on Men's Basketball
USC Trojans athletic director Mike Garrett announced self-sanctions on the the men's basketball program due to the OJ Mayo investigation today. Mayo with his affiliation with Rodney Guillory, who was deemed to be a booster under NCAA rules, was found to be ineligible for the 2007-2008 season, the only season he played for the Trojans.
LAst Night's Action: Suns Blaze Lakers
Phoenix Suns defeat LA Lakers 118-103. Bad defense and bad shooting lost the game for the Lakers. While the Lakers overpowered the Suns in both games at the Staples Center earlier this season, the Suns defended the paint giving the Lakers’ bigs problems all night. The Suns torched the Lakers in the second half leading by as much as 22 points. While Kobe Bryant led all scorers with 34 points, Amare Stoudemire led the Suns with 26 points and six boards. The bench war was won by the Suns outscoring the Lakers’ subs 52-31. While this is the Lakers third straight mediocre game, it’s still a bit too early to panic and throw foam fingers onto the hardwood.
UCLA Football Preview - Injuries, Suspensions and KSU 'Cats
The UCLA Bruins are a team trying to turn the corner on a 4-8 season. So far they are off to a good 2-0 start. The defense has been as advertised while the young offense has been a work in progress. That progress may have been stalled a little with the injury to starting quarterback Kevin Prince in last week's win over Tennessee. But the Bruins and head coach Rick Neuheisel are confident that they can overcome the injuries and other issues to continue the improvement . This week, the 1-1 Kansas State Wildcats come into Pasadena with some issues of their own.
NCAA President Myles Brand Dies
President Myles Brand of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's died today after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was the first university president--in 2002, he left the top post at Indiana University--to take the job as NCAA's chief executive, most notably becoming a "champion of academic reform, fiscal responsibility and student-athlete well-being," according to the association. "The keystone of his work was the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate program," explained Bloomberg News, "which measured the success of each athletic team in keeping athletes on track to graduate. Teams slipping behind faced penalties, including the loss of athletic scholarships." Brand was 67.
UCLA's Starting QB Out 3-4 Weeks
UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel announced that starting quarterback Kevin Prince will be out 3-4 weeks with a broken jaw. He was injured toward the end of yesterday's game against Tennessee but was able to finish the game by kneeling in the victory formation to seal the win for the Bruins. The fracture is on the right side of his face and was discovered this morning during X-rays.
UCLA Football Wrap Up - Bruins Rocky Top Tough
There weren't a lot of reasons to believe that the Bruins could go into Knoxville and beat Tennessee. They have only won five of their last 22 games away from Pasadena. They were only 3-7-2 on the road against SEC teams. They were too young. The crowd was too big. Tennessee was too angry.
UCLA Football Preview - A Tough Test in Tennessee
This week the UCLA Bruins head east across the Mississippi to Knoxville to face some hungry Vols. After showing some early game jitters against San Diego State last week, the Bruins were able to right the ship and pull away in the end to a comfortable win. They won't have that luxury this week, as they will face a Vols team that is noted for their speedy defense.
10 Reasons Why I Love College Football
Football is such a barbaric game (see: Blount, LeGarrette) that I decided to add some technology on opening night. First I got a high-def TV to distinguish Boise State's blue players from their blue field. Go figure, it was the Oregon Dayglo Ducks that didn't seem to be out there.
Something Lurks in the Coliseum: USC '09 Season Preview
So has Pete Carroll.
Unfortunately for USC's opponents, the NCAA doesn't approve of settling things with pitchforks and torches. Fortunately for USC's opponents, they also don't approve of settling things with a playoff.
The Trojans start this season with another mind-boggling collection of talent -- and expectations. Ranked No. 4 in most of the preseason polls, the only schools ahead of USC all feature a quarterback who already won the Heisman Trophy (or should have).
How 'Bout Them Bruins?: UCLA '09 Season Preview
With the college football season fast approaching, its time to see how the local team from Westwood looks coming into the new season.
The UCLA Bruins have a lot of work to do after last year’s campaign that started with promise defeating Tennessee at home but ended with pain losing four of their last five games. The Bruins finished with a 4-8 record overall 3-6 in the Pac-10, eighth in the conference just ahead of the Washington schools.
TV Junkie: NCAA; WHDH/Leno Redux
Perhaps it's because of the NCAA final, but it seems like there isn't a heck of a lot of TV news to report, all of late night TV tonight is repeats and no one has given us any cool leaks lately. Do you have the inside scoop on some TV tidbits? Other than former "Charlie's Angels" angel Farrah Fawcette's cancer spreading, of course.
TV Junkie: Boston NBC Affiliate Says 'No' to New Leno Show
Unless you are a basketball or baseball fan, this weekend's options are kind of slim - feel free to sift through our picks - what are you going to watch? If it's not on our list, let us know and we'll talk about it.
TV Junkie: Obama's Ratings Fall but he's still the President; Cheryl Hines' 'In the Motherhood'
Nielsen says that President Obama's latest press conference slipped in the ratings and that the CW series, "Reaper", gained (the implication is that Obama is suffering from overexposure). I'm not sure how many teens would be that in economics, much less everyday Americans. I guess former President Bush avoided these kind of comparisons by not doing press conferences and by spending more time on vacation than any other president.
TV Junkie: 'Battlestar Galactica' - Vaya Con Dios
Tonight marks the end of "Battlestar Galactica", for about 20 years until the geeks of the future resurrect it like they did the now-campy 1970s version. Some have complained that this final season swung the show onto a science-fiction track that was too science-fiction-y but the show had to return to its roots, its core, before wandering off into the cosmos.
TV Junkie: The Prez on Leno; 'Behind the Music' Returns?
The big news for TV and for LA is that President Barack Obama will be a guest tonight on "The Tonight Show" - we know what we'll be watching at 11:35pm (sorry Colbert).
Who Will It Be Now?
It's March Madness, the Big Dance, what have you and now is the time where all work productivity ceases and everyone in the country fills out a bracket. We here at LAist are suckers for this, so we are holding a contest. Go to LAist's group page on Yahoo! Sports, and fill out a bracket.
World Series of Beer Pong IV: Unlike College Football, Beer Pong Has a Playoff
Downstairs in the sportsbook of the Flamingo, casual fans and degenerates alike are placing their bets on Thursday's BCS Championship game between Florida and Oklahoma, two teams that aren't meeting because they knocked off foes in a playoff system to reach the championship round. Upstairs on the conference room level of the Las Vegas hotel and casino, more than 400 teams from across North America are competing in tournament for a championship.
Stop Your Whining
With the Dodgers postseason run, the Lakers undefeated start to their season and the election and subsequent hangover getting in the way, let’s talk some football!
LAst Night's Action: Raindrops Keep Falling on Their Head
Tampa Bay Rays and Philadelphia Phillies 2-2 (bottom of 6th inning). There have been rainouts in the World Series before. But never before has a game been suspended in the World Series. Cole Hamels had managed to keep the Rays down to only one run until the top of the sixth inning when the Rays manufactured a run to tie the game. Although the commish Bud Selig promised that even if the Rays hadn't scored the tying run the game wouldn't have been called, it allowed the Rays to take a sigh of relief. Meanwhile the Phillies once again regressed to the team that couldn't get a hit with runners in scoring position. The final 2 1/2 innings will be played tonight at 5pm. The Phillies still lead the series 3-1.
FOOTBALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The first college football Saturday has come and gone, and despite some of the lopsided scores provided by the top ranked teams there were some revelations learned.
