Red Wings 3, Kings 0 - The best hockey team in the NHL was in Staples Center on Tuesday night. Unfortunately for local fans, the worst team in the NHL calls it home. The Kings lost to Detroit for the 17th time in 18 games. Next up, LA hosts Anaheim, then gets some time off for the all star break. That means plenty of rest, since it's not like the Kings will have many players going.

Why are the Dodgers doing this to us? Yesterday’s come-from-behind victory in the ninth inning was great. Never could I have imagined the Dodgers would execute the Earl Weaver (a three-run homer) perfectly to take the lead. It was only the third time this season the Dodgers had won a game when trailing after eight innings; they had lost 59 times in that situation. As high of a high as that was, reality starts...
Pachuca 4, Galaxy 3 - With a cool million bucks on the line, the Los Angeles lost the final of the first ever SuperLiga tournament. After the Galaxy scored an own goal in the first half, they tied it at 1-1 in stoppage time on a brilliant bicycle kick by Chris Klein. Quarter-billion dollar man David Beckham sprained his knee and could be out another 4-6 weeks. At this rate, he won't be around to...
The Dodgers are winning. They’ve won nine of their last 13 games crawling back to 4 ½ games within the NL West lead. It looks like a rosy picture, but I’m still not buying into it. The problem is the Dodgers are merely a singles-hitting team that can only run station-to-station. Of their 1,232 hits 225 are doubles (ranked 13th in the NL), 27 are triples (tied for 8th) and 96 are home runs...
Dodgers 4, Nationals 3 - Maybe, just maybe, Los Angeles is turning things around. The Blue Crew won for the third straight game and are within 4.5 of first place. Takashi Saito has been perfect in each of those games, retiring the final three opposing batters in each contest. Andre Ethier was 0-for-3 on Tuesday night, but drove home the winning run on a sac fly. The Dodgers go for the sweep against Washington tonight....
On a day of magnificent feats when Detroit Tiger’s 24-year old pitcher Justin Verlander pitched a no-hitter against the Milwaukee Brewers, the Dodgers managed to top that. They exploded with three consecutive homers on three consecutive pitches against the New York Mets in the second inning. Don’t get me wrong. Verlander’s no-no was absolutely amazing. In the ninth inning, he was still pitching strikes at 102 mph. And given the blustery conditions at Comerica...
Holy smokes! Giant fish on the MTA, Paris Hilton in jail, then out, then in again, Al Gore, goatses, blumpkins, Matt Damon, and baby art critics! It's been a busy week across the Ist-A-Verse, and here's a smattering of what's been going on. In Gothamist's neck of the woods, they found out that many things are possible: A man caught a 40+ pound fish off the Rockaways and took it home on the subway. Graffiti...
O Dodgers how you break my heart sometimes. I was only kidding at the beginning of the year when I expected you to go 162-0. I only expect you to win around 92 games this season which is just over 56% of the games, but when you get a horrible team like the Washington Nationals you should be able to sweep them easily. You don’t lose to them 11-4. Let’s face it. The Mark...
A Word or 21: Mark Burnett can't come up with anything new other than Pirate Master - and you thought Survivor had gone down the tubes. Tonight - Thursday - May 31, 2007 Orioles @ Angels (Fox Sports, 7:00 p.m.) Dodgers @ Nationals (PRIME, 7:30 p.m.) Pirate Master (CBS, 8:00 p.m.) Series premiere! Reality show set up to piggyback on a movie not produced by this network - lawsuit anyone? 2007 Scripps National Spelling...
Ducks 1, Senators 0 - Anaheim needed another last-second goal to beat Ottawa, but in the NHL finals they'll take any victory they can get. Jean-Sebastien Giguere was clutch in the net again, guiding the Ducks to a 2-0 series lead. The teams head to Canada for the next two games. If necessary, five and seven would be in Anaheim. But does anybody care? Dodgers 5, Nationals 0 - It's going to be a good...
Did any of you catch Bobby Flay's Throwdown the other night? It's the show where he goes to different cities across the world and challenges some legendary food purveyor that his version of whatever traditional city food they're making will win a blind taste test. Usually, he loses, cause I mean COME ON: can anybody really make a cheese steak better than a Philly native? What about fish n' chips from some grotty bar...
With the Dodgers playing a rather boring series at the Washington Nationals, it’s time to take care of some housecleaning. All Star Voting Yesterday, Major League Baseball released the preliminary results of the first period of fan voting for the All Star Game. The fan votes will determine which position players start the game. According to the results, My Boyfriend is running a distant fourth to the fiery whoring gambler Paul Lo Duca (former...
Drunk Buss Driver - Laker owner Jerry Buss was popped for a DUI yesterday in Carlsbad. There are a lot of questions yet to be answered: Who was the 23 year old girl he was with? Why would a baller like Buss be driving a station wagon? Will Kobe's demands to bring back Jerry West be fulfilled? Hmmm, maybe this little ordeal was just to distract us from that last question. Dodgers 10, Nationals 0...
Lakers 95, Suns 89 - After getting smacked around in the first two games of the series, the Lakers were looking up at a 17 point Phoenix lead in game three. Then something snapped. Kobe went on a 45 point rampage and -- surprise! -- Kwame Brown had 19. Lamar Odom had 18, but more important were his 16 rebounds (6 on the offensive glass). Los Angeles finally has the spark of hope that sometimes...
One word: UY!
Every time I’m driving up La Brea and I see that line of hungry hot-dog cravers snaking up the street, I gotta shake my head – seriously, people? You’d wait in that line? For a hot dog? And for Christ’s sake, where are all you people parking? Don’t get me wrong – I love Pink’s as much as the next girl, and I’ve certainly indulged in my fair share of that famous chili cheesiness...
Clippers 103, Suns 99 - The sun hasn't set on the Clipper's playoff hopes yet. Los Angeles surprised Phoenix, who played their regular starters despite a lock on the #2 seed in the West. The Clippers need to beat New Orleans (a/k/a Oklahoma City) on Wednesday and root for Portland to beat Golden State. That scenario would tie them with the Warriors at .500. The teams split their season series, but the Clippers would advance...
Nationals 9, Dodgers 1 - This spring training game was pretty much already over entering the bottom of the 8th, but Washington poured it on with six more runs. Of greater note to local fans, D.J. Houlton, Eric Stylts, and Delwyn Young got shipped off to the minors, and Tony Abreu, Choo Freeman, Jonathan Meloan, and Matt White were reassigned. Kobe 0 - 'Cause he didn't play today. Elsewhere - Check out your 2007 Angels...
- The first charitable Muslim medical institution in the US was founded in South Central LA. The UMMA clinic was started by UCLA students in 1996 and was honored recently with a special address on the floor of the US House of Representatives by Maxine Waters. - Two Egyptian Nationals who plead guilty for enslaving a 10 year old girl here in Southern California were given 2 years in prison and forced to pay...
The Dodgers captured sole possession of the National League Wild Card lead by defeating the Colorado Rockies, 11-4. The Philadelphia Phillies, led by homerun sensation Ryan Howard, lost to the Washington Nationals, 4-3. Ryan Howard had a chance to win the game for Philadelphia, but he flied out to deep centerfield with the tying run on base for the last out of the game. Currently, we are one game up on Philadelphia in the wild card race and just 2 games back of the Padres in the National League West Division.
After Wired ran a story documenting the GoogleCenter of the United States a bunch of ists jumped on the opportunity to figure out their own middle. Gothamist, Chicagoist, Bostonist and Seattlest all zoomed in on their creamy GoogleCenters. A crack cartography team is hard at work determining the GoogleCenter of the Ist-a-verse as you read this...
The Dodgers finished their disappointing season with a loss to eventual division champs San Diego Padres and closed the books on what was their worst season in over 10 years. We don’t know what was more frustrating, the fact that the Dodgers, just before the post season was to start last year, watched their first place team melt away under the misguided general management of the since fired Paul DePodesta. Or that the team that was brought in to replace it this season was mainly on the bench injured while unproven youngsters took the bulk of the innings as well as the bulk of the losses. LAist never thought that DePodesta’s “Moneyball” system was going to work in LA bringing in new players with stats but not taking into regard the chemistry of the clubhouse (see future Hall of Famer and clubhouse cancer Jeff Kent). Then to add insult to the injuries (sorry that was too easy) manager Jim Tracy, a master at making the most of what he was given, was let go.
