LAst Night's Action: National League Breaks 14 Year Swoon

LAst Night's Action: National League Breaks 14 Year Swoon

National League defeats American League 3-1. For the first time since 1996 the National League won the Midsummer Classic and their first win since the winning league got home field advantage in 2003. And they really had to earn the win in a pitchers’ duel which only made sense in this Year of the Pitcher. more ›

While You Were Out: Dodgers Sweep Cubs, Advance to NLCS

While You Were Out: Dodgers Sweep Cubs, Advance to NLCS

The Dodgers brought their NL Division series to a close with a 3-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs last night here at Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers swept the three-game series, keeping the Cubs a full 100 years since their last World Series win and another year away from the chance. For the Dodgers it's the first post-season series win in 20 years, and an exciting wrap-up to their first year under the direction of Joe Torre. Now the Dodgers will face either Philadelphia or Milwaukee in a best-of-seven series that will start on Thursday. Could this be the year Big Blue goes all the way? more ›

Barry Bonds: "Not Guilty"

Barry Bonds: "Not Guilty"

Barry Bonds was in federal court today to face the music ... sort of. Southern California's least favorite son pleaded not guilty to four counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice. After showing off his latest threads (the wire reports had little else to say so they raved about his "impeccably tailored" look), Bonds walked back out a free man. He was essentially released on his own recognizances, but would owe Uncle... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Lakers/Ducks Win, Clippers/Kings Lose, World is Right

Lakers 111, Nuggets 107 - Allen Iverson lit up the scoreboard with 51 points but three Lakers responded with big nights of their own. Kobe Bryant scored 25, Vladimir Radmanovic added 21, and Derek Fisher had 20. Despite his big night, the Lakers only allowed Iverson one layup in the fourth quarter. Sonics 95, Clippers 88 - Seven is unlucky for the Clipper -- it's how many games they've lost in a row. Seattle led... more ›

What's Up Dodgers?

What's Up Dodgers?

So what has been going on in Dodger land since I last posted? Well a big hearty congrats go to Russell Martin for winning the Silver Slugger Award for National League catchers. Voted by coaches and managers, Martin led the NL catchers in hits, homers, runs, stolen bases, batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage. Only Mike Piazza (from 1993-1998) was the other Dodger catcher to win the award since its inception in 1980.... more ›

The Dodger's Own Golden Boy

On Tuesday it was announced that Dodger catcher Russell Martin is joining a fraternity of National League catchers that include Johnny Roseboro, Johnny Bench, Benito Santiago, Tony Pena and even Mike Lieberthal. Russell Martin is now a gold glove winner. Since 1957, Rawlings have been giving out the gold glove award for best fielding performance at each position. Martin is the first full year Dodger catcher since Johnny Roseboro in 1966 to win this... more ›

50 Years After Losing the Dodgers, Brooklyn Doesn't Care

50 Years After Losing the Dodgers, Brooklyn Doesn't Care

While all the cheesy babybooming douches like Costas and McCarver harken back endlessly about the good ole days of the Boys of Summer before they left NY and moved to LA, keep in mind one thing - people in Brooklyn don't miss the Dodgers. They might miss Vin Scully, or decent National League baseball, but miss or care about the Bums? Faggitaboutit. "When Pee Wee Reese died," said Marty Adler, who has spent years... more ›

Furcal is One Mean Mofo -- Dodgers Destroy The Padres to Become 1.5 Games Away in the NL Wildcard Race

Photo by Jory'z Shotz via Flickr. Ex-Padre David Wells sent his ex-teammates on a loooooooong trip home to San Diego last night. Just when you thought the season was over, the Dodgers win two-in-a-row against the insanely awesome Padres. It was Maddux vs Wells (old vs old?). Wells allowed only 4 hits, Maddux allowed 11 including 2 from Wells himself (his first multi-hit game ever). Dodgers win 6-3. Saito made his impressive 38th save... more ›

Bills Goes All the Way

Bills Goes All the Way

Chad Billingsley was just what the doctor ordered for the Dodgers Monday night. With the Dodgers bullpen so exhausted they’ve started using Prozac as a reliever, the Dodgers needed Bills to go deep in the game against the Houston Astros. In his last three starts he had not gone longer than six innings with 90 pitches. In fact his last game he went five innings on 113 pitches. So the fact he pitched a... more ›

As my friend put it, our long national nightmare is over: interleague play is done. Finito! And calling interleague play is by no means an exaggeration. The Dodgers went 5-10 against the AL. more ›

Bring Out the Brooms!

Being the last real home game before they go on a 10-game roadtrip, I really wanted to witness the last game of the Met’s series Wednesday night. I’m sorry, but I think interleague play is a complete farce even if it is against the Angels. more ›

Can I Take Potpourri for $400 Alex?

Can I Take Potpourri for $400 Alex?

With the Dodgers playing a rather boring series at the Washington Nationals, it’s time to take care of some housecleaning. All Star Voting Yesterday, Major League Baseball released the preliminary results of the first period of fan voting for the All Star Game. The fan votes will determine which position players start the game. According to the results, My Boyfriend is running a distant fourth to the fiery whoring gambler Paul Lo Duca (former... more ›

My Boyfriend Hit a Home Run

My Boyfriend Hit a Home Run

My Boyfriend hit a homer, and the Dodgers managed a win!!! There. That’s my quota of happy talk for now. There is something that’s leaving a bad taste in my mouth. I’m wondering why the Dodgers called up third baseman Tony Abreu from the minor leagues yesterday. As a team, the Dodgers have many glaring deficiencies: no power hitting, inconsistency at the third base position and the worst defense in the National League. Bring... more ›

Channel Your Inner Sixto Lezcano

Roughly one month into the season, and the Los Angeles Dodgers are within 2 games of the best record in Major League Baseball. What team began play today with the best record? Why the Milwaukee Brewers, of course. Led by young hitting stars Prince (Don't Call me Cecil) Fielder, Bill Hall (of Fame), Corey (Never Surrender) Hart, and Rickie (insert cheesy nickname here) Weeks, the Brewers have belted more home runs than all but two major league teams. Matched with an unhittable bullpen and a . . . well . . . and a serviceable starting rotation, the Brew Crew is suddenly the team to beat in the National League. more ›

Better Know a Dodger . . . Mark Hendrickson

Better Know a Dodger . . . Mark Hendrickson

With a 5-3 loss last night to San Francisco, the Los Angeles Dodgers' lead in the National League West has narrowed to one game over the Padres. The next two games at Dodger Stadium will be key, as a No Cal sweep over So Cal would move the Giants into a virtual tie with the Dodgers in the NL West. One player who will have absolutely no impact in either of the remaining games against the Giants is pitcher Mark Hendrickson (he's scheduled to start Saturday against the Pads). And given his lack of immediate importance, it's no coincidence that Mark is the subject in Part 5 of our 436 Part Series, Better Know a Dodger. more ›

Better Know a Dodger . . . Andre Ethier

Better Know a Dodger . . . Andre Ethier

Despite the Los Angeles Dodgers' 7-2 loss Wednesday night in Colorado, no team in Major League Baseball can boast more wins (10) than the Blue Crew heading into Thursday's action. Led by an airtight bullpen, the Dodger pitching staff (2nd best ERA in the National League) has driven much of the team's early season success. This, of course, is a horrible segue (in fact no segue at all) to the subject of Part 4 in our 436-Part Series, "Better Know a Dodger" - outfielder, Andre Ethier. more ›

Better Know a Dodger . . . Marlon Anderson

Better Know a Dodger . . . Marlon Anderson

On the heels of taking two games out of three from the San Diego Padres this weekend, the Dodgers have run their record to 8-4, and trail the division leading Arizona Diamondbacks by only one-half game. First place will be up for grabs when the Dodgers travel to Phoenix for a two-game set on Monday. A small component of the Dodgers' on-field success thus far has been the play of veteran utility player Marlon Anderson. Although he's had a limited impact in 2007, Anderson still will garner unlimited attention as the subject of Part 3 of our 436-Part Series, "Better Know a Dodger." more ›

Better Know a Dodger . . . Joe Beimel

Three Dodger pitchers combined on a 2-hit shutout, and Nomar Garciaparra hit a 2-run single to lead Los Angeles to a 3-0 victory last night over the Colorado Rockies at Dodger Stadium. Left-handed set-up relief pitcher Joe Beimel was not one of the pitchers involved in the shutout. Nevertheless, Mr. Beimel does have the good fortune of being the subject in Part 2 of our 436-Part series, "Better Know a Dodger". more ›

An Eyewitness Account of Jackie's First Day at Work

An Eyewitness Account of Jackie's First Day at Work

It's easy to talk about breaking the color line like it was no big deal. Like it was anything imaginable to what the pampered players of today experience. Like it was something we could even conceive. The truth was the MLB owners unanimously voted against Jackie being allowed to play and even his fellow Dodgers signed a petition to stop blacks from playing baseball. Imagine what it would be like to go to work... more ›

Dodgers Lose Game 2

This evening was another tough day for the Dodgers at Flushing Meadows. After ending the season with a seven game winning streak they start the National League Division Series by losing the first two games. They came up short in yesterdays’ game losing 6 to 5, and looked lackluster tonight in a 4 to 1 loss. more ›

Dodgers Stake Claim to Wild Card Lead and Hope to Extend It Tonight

The Dodgers captured sole possession of the National League Wild Card lead by defeating the Colorado Rockies, 11-4. The Philadelphia Phillies, led by homerun sensation Ryan Howard, lost to the Washington Nationals, 4-3. Ryan Howard had a chance to win the game for Philadelphia, but he flied out to deep centerfield with the tying run on base for the last out of the game. Currently, we are one game up on Philadelphia in the wild card race and just 2 games back of the Padres in the National League West Division. more ›

Streaking Blue Crew to battle Piazza's Padres

The National League West has turned into the most competitive division in Baseball. Every team in the West still has a shot at a playoff berth. They were not supposed to be this good. They were not supposed to be competitive. At the start of the season the division was the laughing stock of Major League Baseball, with many pundits expressing that they would not be surprised if every NL West team finished below... more ›

Nomar Still Has a Chance for All-Star Game

Dodger first baseman Nomar Garciaparra was not voted into the MLB All-Star game's starting lineup or chosen as a reserve despite a spectacular comeback and .360+ batting average. But the converted shortstop has, many of us here at LAist think, a good chance of earning the National League's selection as the Final Vote. more ›
