What's On the Menu at Short Order, Opening Today
Short Order opens its doors to the public at 5 p.m. today. The highly-anticipated restaurant is the latest enterprise of L.A. food royalty Nancy Silverton and the late Amy Pressman. So, what's on the menu? Well, burgers, of course, and a whole lot more.
Food Luminaries Fête Ruth Reichl and Gilt Taste
When world leaders and royal newlyweds come to Los Angeles, streets close down, and mayhem ensues. When one of America's foremost food writers comes to town, we eat! Such was the case last week when Ruth Reichl presided over a luxe feast at Osteria Mozza for some of the city's most celebrated chefs and food media personalities.
Burger Lovers, Rejoice: Silverton & Pressman's Short Order Breaks Ground at Farmers' Market
Los Angeles suffers from a pretty chronic case of Burgermania, and the hype gets fueled by news of an impending new contender for the city's favorite beefy bite between two buns. One of the most highly-anticipated burgerventures is the dream team of Nancy Silverton and Amy Pressman, and their Short Order burger restaurant, which is getting closer to reality in its spot in the historic Original Farmers' Market.
Osteria Mozza: Still a Big Deal
On March 5th, I called Osteria Mozza to make a reservation for April 5th (they only take reservations a month in advance.) I thought I would call at lunchtime when they would first be open. A critical mistake. Turns out that the reservation line for both Mozzas opens at 10 am. I could get 5:30 or 9:45. Not being a New Yorker, I took the earlier time.
Daniel Boulud, After Hours in Los Angeles
Daniel Boulud is one star-studded chef: he's got a small pile of Michelin stars and James Beard awards, and his New York restaurants are consistently ranked as the country's best. His TV show "After Hours" is equally star-studded: celebs and famous chefs show up to join Boulud on an intimate tour of kitchens and homes. The new season, which premieres tonight at 9:30 tonight on the HD channel MOJO (if you don't have HD, you can watch the first episode online here), finds Boulud exploring one of the world's capitals of adventurous, robust, modern cuisine: Los Angeles.
Open, Open, Open! We Can't Wait For Your Opening Date(s)!
Here are a few spots for eats and drinks that we are looking forward to seeing open: 1. We were very excited to pass on to you that last month was National Grilled Cheese Month, and now we're gearing up for the impending opening of Culver City's Meltdown, which is a (mostly) grilled cheese eatery that's slated to open as early as this week. Their menu, which is available online, looks like an ooey-gooey...
Get Your Silverton Fix
With all the hype over Mozza, Nancy Silverton and Mario Batali's brainchild, LAist decided last week to throw a bone to an old LA dining night (and by old we mean more than 1 year!) and head to Jar for Mozzarella Mondays. You have heard about it a few times here before.
Small Bites: A Quick Look at the State of the Plate
Tongues are wagging about the long-anticipated opening of Mozza, the love child of local legend Nancy Silverton and celeb chef Mario Batali, that took place early last month. We, too, had our eye on the pizzeria's progress for most of this year as the changes happened molasses-slow over on the corner of Melrose and Highland. While LAist waits for the hype to die down a bit before we belly up to the bar, we're tuned...
Eating En-Counters
Certain meals out require proper tables with regular chairs (e.g. for group dining), while other times eschewing regular round/square/rectangular table shapes and grabing a seat or two at a long counter can prove to be far more fun and interesting.
LAist Takes a "Taste of Italy"
It was our pleasure to attend yesterday's "Taste of Italy" Wine and Food tasting event that was held to premiere several Italian wines paired with samplings of food from some of LA's best eateries and in benefit of the non-profit eco-gastronomic organization Slow Food. This gave us the unique opportunity to mingle with prestigious vinters and chefs--some of whom, like Angeli Caffe and KCRW's Good Food's Evan Kleiman and the La Brea Bakery's Nancy Silverton, we'd know of and admired for quite some time.
Monday On the Menu
