The two-day JazzReggae music festival at UCLA's intramural field returns for the 26th year this weekend to entertain those of us not hitting the road this Memorial Day weekend. As always, Sunday May 27 is Jam Day and Monday is billed as Reggae Day.
UCLA JazzReggae Fest Returns Memorial Day Weekend
Once Again, the Sunset Strip Rocked Crowds with its Namesake Music Fest
In 2009 when West Hollywood gave Sunset Strip business owners the blessing to close it down for a rock festival, 10,000 people came shelling out $50 to access numerous stages and tons of music acts. It was a big step in the comeback of famous artery that once was the rock and roll mecca, and before that in the 30s and 40s, a Hollywood hangout.
Outside Lands Delivered Many Music Highlights
(Part 2 of a 2-part review, focusing on the festival's music. To read about the planning, see part 1)
The great thing about large, multi-stage, multi-genre music festivals like Coachella or Outside Lands is that at any given time, 3-4 acts are playing simultaneously. This allows people to, in a sense, curate their own personal version of that festival. You and a couple friends could each go off on your own and have completely different experiences, and perhaps none of you even saw any of the same bands as the others. Yet, you all had a great time, and were able to meet up for a beer and a burger at some point.
Compared to Coachella's Mess, SF's Outside Lands was a Dream
(This is part 1 of a 2-part review, focusing on the festival's planning. To read about the music, see part 2)
Recently, the 3rd edition of the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival was held in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, and LAist was there to see if our neighbors to the north can put on a festival that compares with our own legendary Coachella fest. And the answer is yes... yes, they most certainly can.
Win Tix to this Weekend's FYF Fest!!
Since there was so much enthusiasm surrounding last week's contest to win tickets to FYF Fest, we're doing it again! The one-day festival is this Saturday -- that's what we're giving away five pairs of General Admission tickets to -- but you should know that organizers just announced pre, post and after parties.
Over 60 Bands to Take over the Sunset Strip on Saturday
The Sunset Strip Music Festival began Thursday and continues tonight with a series of concerts at venues in West Hollywood. But Saturday is the big day. Over 60 bands will play on a handful of outdoor and indoor stages when organizers shut down Sunset Boulevard for the day long street festival.
Residents, Businesses Continue to Express Displeasure with the Sunset Junction Street Festival [Updated]
A lot of the music at this weekend's 30th annual Sunset Junction Street Festival was off the hook, but problems from the past persisted. Perception wise, things got off to a rocky start Friday night when the Twitter account for vegan restaurant Flore bemoaned that their employees, save for a few, would have to pay the $20 entrance fee to get to work.
HARD L.A. the Latest Outdoor Music Festival to be Canceled [Updated]
Scheduled for this weekend, HARD L.A. has now been canceled, according the LA Times. It is the second music festival to go wayside following the controversial Electric Daisy Carnival at the L.A. Coliseum, where more than 100 people were sent to the hospital, including 15-year-old who later died.
Smashing Pumpkins to Headline the Sunset Strip Music Festival
Last year it was Ozzy, this year the Smashing Pumpkins, the Sunset Strip Music Festival announced today for its 3rd annual festival. Billy Corgan, Jeff Schroeder and Mike Byrne will join their new bassist Nicole Fiorentino to headline on Saturday August 28th. This year, again, the event will shut down the Sunset Strip for a day of 50 bands on two outdoor stages and inside The Roxy, Whisky, Viper Room, Key and Cat clubs. Slash is the the 2010 honoree at the festival -- in previous years it has been Ozzy Osbourne (2009) and Sunset Strip club owners Lou Adler, Mario Maglieri and Elmer Valentine (2008). Photos from last year can be seen here and here.
Ojai Music Festival to Honor Frank Zappa this Weekend
Now in its 64th year, the Ojai Music Festival is back this weekend, bringing its progressive brand of classical programming, a blend of old classics and contemporary composers. The four-day event begins Thursday with an evening of music by Californian Steve Potter, Saed Haddad of the Mid-East, Austrian (and eventual Los Angeles resident) composer Arnold Schoenberg and American composer Elliot Carter.
Ojai Music Fest's Lineup: Frank Zappa, Stravinsky, & More

“Ojai’s tradition of inviting a different music director for each season guarantees variety and vitality across festivals," said Artistic Director Thomas W. Morris....
Photos: Sunset Strip Music Festival Brings Life Back to the Streets
For years, the Sunset Junction Street Festival has been a hub of Los Angeles' music event scene. Now, a few miles down the same street, a new festival--serving up a different kind of music--has appeared and organizers say it's here to stay.
Photos: The Sunset Strip Music Festival Off to a Rockin' Start
The Sunset Strip Music Festival kicked off its first street closure today, drawing big crowds early afternoon as The Donnas, Fishbone, Unwritten Law, among other bands, took to the one of the six stages. Over 50 bands are playing through 2 a.m. with Ozzy Osbourne headlining--his first time back playing the Strip in years.

Ojai's Libbey Bowl to be Rebuilt
Ojai is one of the most quaint and nice little hidden away Southern California towns. Known to us primarily for the most excellently produced Ojai Music Festival (some of the best classical programming mixed with a weekend trip/bed & breakfast), the artsy village is nestled in its own valley north of the 126 highway and just east of Ventura.
Tonight and this Weekend in Rock: Prepare for the Sunset Junction
This weekend is one of Los Angeles' most popular and well known music festivals out there. Sunset Junction takes place both on Saturday and Sunday.
A 'Greener' Coachella? Lightning in a Bottle Festival Starts Tomorrow
The Do Lab made a name for themselves by designing mesmerizing interactive art installations for huge, multi-day music festivals such as Coachella and Vegoose, but they have also been producing their own music and art festival, Lightning in a Bottle, for several years now, and the 2008 edition kicks off tomorrow at Live Oak campground (near Santa Barbara) and runs all the way through Monday.
Tonight in Rock: Lizz Wright, We Barbarians, Ari Shine
Luckily, since SXSW Music officially starts on Wednesday, tonight's massive line-up of residencies is hardly affected, save for The Voom Blooms who are replaced by We Barbarians and others at the Viper Room tonight (full list of tonight's residencies after the jump). However, the exodus of Los Angeles based bands is upon us.
Pencil This In: Sunday
Throw on a hoodie and some comfy pants and head out now to make the 2 p.m. start of the Radical Women's International Women’s Day Celebration talk called "Art, Media & Revolution – Three Feminist Visionaries Speak Out." Panelists include artist Susana De Leon, poet Ashley Love, and journalist Amanda Rossi. If getting in touch with your inner grrrrrl makes you hungry, a "rebel-girl supper with vegetarian option" follows at 4:30.
Pencil This In: Friday
A Bloody Aria, a film from Korea about a professor, his pretty student and a possible murder, opens tonight for a one-week engagement in Little Tokyo. It’s been compared to Deliverance, but with a dark sense of humor. (We wonder if there’s any pig squealing in this one?)
Tonight in Rock: War Tapes, KRS ONE, Elaine Brown
Two highly recommended Hip-Hop shows take place tonight. Experience the powerful Gospel of Hip-Hop with KRS ONE at The Roxy or explore some electronic Hip-Hop with Sole and the Skyrider Band. And we mean no disrespect to Peanut Butter Wolf who is playing at El Rey with Chromeo, but we know for sure that show is sold out (scalp away!). The Troubadour has some jazz fusion rock going on (MP3s after the jump) and you can find straight ahead jazz at UCLA.
Tonight in Rock: Fundraising at Shark Aid
Pink Mochi and the feel-good all American folk rock band, Charlie Wadhams.

Celebrity Photo Contest for More Detour Tickets
Here in the land of stars, we see celebrities all the time. Whether out shopping at the Beverly Center, grabbing a bite at Canter’s, or filling up their ride at the gas station, famous people still have a regular life to live just as much as us “common folk,” even if some celebs view themselves as God's gift to mankind. It’s nice to see these performers outside the context of their onscreen/on-camera/behind-the-mic personas to see...
