Mulholland Drive Reopens

Mulholland Drive Reopens

A bit of traffic relief for over-the-hill travel! Closed since a February storm washed out a large chunk of the famous route, the portion of Mulholland Drive reopened today between Laurel Canyon Avenue and Coldwater Canyon Boulevard. "All concrete k-rails and barricades installed have been completely removed and the street is now open to traffic," said Cora Jackson-Fossett, a spokesperson of the Department of Public Works. "The Bureaus of Engineering and Street Services, respectively, designed and constructed the bulkhead to support the roadway as well as reconstructed the street and built a guardrail." That was followed by the Department of Transportation installing new signage and restriping this morning. The expensive project highlighted a need for why the city shouldn't deplete its reserve funds during a budget crisis. more ›

What Happened to Los Angeles' 22-Mile Hiking Trail?

What Happened to Los Angeles' 22-Mile Hiking Trail?

It was back in 1992 when the Mulholland Scenic Parkway Specific Plan went into effect, setting course for the city of Los Angeles to preserve the historic 1924 drive through a set of land use regulations and improvements. Among those was the Core Trail, some 22 miles in length, roughly from near the Hollywood Bowl to Topanga Canyon Boulevard. Approaching 20 years since it became law, some are wondering why nothing has been done. more ›

Craigslist Rental: Muholland Drive Home for up to $75K/Month

It took the LAPD nearly "two dozen police officers, a helicopter and a special team" to block roads and escort Britney Spears in an ambulance with covered windows from her Mulholland Drive Studio City Home to UCLA Medical Center early yesterday morning. Depp to Downtown: Johnny Goes Urban, Kinda

Depp to Downtown: Johnny Goes Urban, Kinda

Forget Malibu. Forget the Hollywood Hills. Forget Mulholland Drive. Downtown is the new hot LZ for A-list celebrities, at least for the beloved Johnny Depp. He looked and bought into the $2-million property six months ago, but still hasn't moved into the Art Deco Eastern Columbia Building on Broadway, which has reportedly been having problems selling all the units. To that, the LA Times gives you the hard sell:

It's not too late to become one of Depp's neighbors. There is a furnished corner unit in the building listed at about $1.8 million. It's on the 12th floor and is described as light-filled with an open floor plan and high ceilings. The unit has a bronze and iron entry gate, storage for 112 bottles of wine, flat-screen TVs, a jukebox, a vintage-style safe and city views. The 1,827-square-foot loft was decorated by designer Jim Hughes. more ›

You may think he’s a brilliant director, with Twin Peaks, The Elephant Man, and Mulholland Drive among his long list of film and TV projects, not to mention four Academy Award nominations. A Truly Neighborhood Hike: Dixie Canyon Park

A Truly Neighborhood Hike: Dixie Canyon Park

We sort of chuckled after finishing this hike. We stood at the trail head 15 minutes after we started. So much for a big adventure (hehe). However, there is still value in this eighth-mile hike at an odd cul de sac surrounded by expensive hillside condos just north of Mulholland Drive in Studio City. We're sure the residents of the street do not appreciate so much the public park outside their door, but also... more ›

For the Dogs

LAist is not only a daily weblog of all things Los Angeles, but also an avid friend to animals great and small. This, of course, includes our friend the dog. But here in a metropolitan monolith of steel and brick our furry friends don't have as many places to romp freely. There are dog parks, this is true — but which ones are worth visiting and which ones are, no pun intended, a bunch of crap? more ›
