Found Saturday morning in a trap set by National Park Service scientists around Malibu Springs, the approximately 2-year-old lion became the 14th to wear a tracking collar around its neck. At the end of July, a female with a similar age was found and collared. P14 and P13, respectively, have blood samples being analyzed by researchers at UCLA to determine connections, if any, to other lions studied in mountains.

Bears? Mountain Lions? 2 Incidents in 2 Days

There are about 30- to 35,000 bears in California, according to Department of Fish & Game officials. With that many, there's no doubt that stories like this morning's--a 300-pound bear wanders into a Camarillo apartment complex--are surprising. Yesterday around noon, two campers' dog and mountain lion dueled in the Cleveland National Forest outside of Santa Ana. Mountains lions usually want to keep to themselves and Fish & Game officials told the OC Register that they believe the mountain lion was only acting in self defense, therefore, they will not hunt the lion to put it down. If your curious about what to do in an encounter and how to properly live among them, the state has some good webpages about our local bears and mountain lions.

On Wednesday night, one was in the vicinity of the 405 Freeway and the Skirball Museum.

On Wednesday night last week a 140-pound female mountain lion that had "just killed a dog and was charging at police," in the backyard of a residence near the edge of the Angeles National Forest was shot and killed by authorities on the scene. According to the Daily News, the police believe that this was the same mountain lion responsible for other area incidents, including another dog death in Arcadia and two attacks--including one death--on dogs in Glendora.

Usually in these kind of cases, when authorities turn up there is no sign of the suspected animal, but on this occasion several officers caught a glimpse of the elusive felid which was seen fleeing close to 2479 Niagara Way.
