State investigators are looking into separate deaths of mountain lions in Southern California, according to the OC Register. A mountain lion being tracked via GPS collar by scientists was shot and killed in Trabuco Canyon on July 3rd. 14th Cougar Collared by Rangers in Santa Monica Mountains

   

In less than a months time, rangers with the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area area have captured and placed a GPS collar on a second mountain lion. Found Saturday morning in a trap set by National Park Service scientists around Malibu Springs, the approximately 2-year-old lion became the 14th to wear a tracking collar around its neck. At the end of July, a female with a similar age was found and collared. P14 and P13, respectively, have blood samples being analyzed by researchers at UCLA to determine connections, if any, to other lions studied in mountains. more ›

There are about 30- to 35,000 bears in California, according to Department of Fish & Game officials. With that many, there's no doubt that stories like this morning's--a 300-pound bear wanders into a Camarillo apartment complex--are surprising. Yesterday around noon, two campers' dog and mountain lion dueled in the Cleveland National Forest outside of Santa Ana. Mountains lions usually want to keep to themselves and Fish & Game officials told the OC Register that they believe the mountain lion was only acting in self defense, therefore, they will not hunt the lion to put it down. On Wednesday night last week a 140-pound female mountain lion that had "just killed a dog and was charging at police," in the backyard of a residence near the edge of the Angeles National Forest was shot and killed by authorities on the scene.
