The latest iteration of Modest Mouse rocked the mid-sized (4,000 capacity) Hollywood Palladium last week leaving most fans -- young, old, industry, walk-ins -- satisfied. But for those waiting to hear the opening notes of the band's radio (and video game) hits "Float On," "Ocean Breathes Salty," and "Dashboard," it was an incomplete night.
Modest Mouse at The Palladium, 2/24/09
Tonight In Rock: Modest Mouse, Kinky, French Kicks, Miranda Lee Richards
Tonight Seattle-based indie rock outfit Modest Mouse will be performing at the Hollywood Palladium with the OC's own Japanese Motors. Mexican electro rockers Kinky are poised to headline the Henry Fonda Music Box. And, lastly, San Franciscan singer-songwriter Miranda Lee Richards will be concluding her month-long residency at Spaceland. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Troubadour to catch NY-based indie rockers French Kicks.
Midnight Movie: Modest Mouse's "Float On" @Hollywood Bowl
Modest Mouse opened for REM at the Hollywood Bowl this Thursday. It seems safe to say that it's been just long enough for their big hit "Float On" to have passed its airplay over-saturation and be ready for a mini-comeback. Well, maybe just a one-time refresher listen.
2008 Sasquatch! Music Festival - Day One
If there is a more beautiful place to see a concert than the Gorge Amphitheatre in Washington please direct me to it. Each year, this is the home for the annual memorial weekend blowout known as the Sasquatch! Music Festival. A short two-hour drive east from Seattle takes you to the Gorge, built on the side of a cliff, overlooking the Columbia River. The scenery is as gorgeous as anywhere, when you add in some of the greatest music acts around you have the combination for one of the most enjoyable festivals in America.
Anti-Hipster's Guide to LA: Franki Chan
Is the word Hipster even allowed to be used anymore without disdain dripping from the user's tongue? Is it outdated? What about the connotation - good, bad, both? The Anti-Hipster's Guide to LA is a listing of people, bars/clubs, musicians/DJs, artists, installation, etc etc that may be deemed hipster-centric but don't really carry the negative connotation of the word (meaning pretentious, inaccessible, you get my drift).
Hollywood Bowl 2008 Season Preview: Petty, Python, Diana... Radiohead???
We're four months out from the official start of the 2008 Hollywood Bowl Season and the schedule is nearly complete. Single tickets won't go on sale for a couple months but the Bowl is offering 16 different series packages, each containing 3-5 genre-specific performances.
Week Around the -Ists
A sad week for LAist as they lose their trusted and amazing editor Tony Pierce to the LA Times, but what a blast his last week was. He shared his 25 Favorite CDs of 2007 and wrote a great review of just a good movie, No Country For Old Men. At UCLA, thousands of students celebrated the end of their quarter by running around campus in their undies (lots of photos in a two-part photo essay, one, two). That wasn't the only photo essay either: Joss Whedon/Mutant Enemy friends and Star Trek actors all joined in at the Writers Strike and KROQ's Almost Acoustic Christmas brought two nights of amazing bands that included Avenged Sevenfold, Linkin Park (Part I), Modest Mouse, Muse, Spoon and The Killers (Part II). Not only is L.A. a great music town, it has just been named the best city for bookish types. For those who are looking for something a little more active, American Gladiators are back (yes!) and if that's not enough, how about a Christmas gift of action and adventure?
KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas - Night Two - 12/9/07
One look at the bill for Night Two of KROQ's Almost Acoustic Christmas one might think with all of the INDIE flavor that that LA's "other" rock station was behind the programming. But alas it was KROQ and Night Two featured great performances by Modest Mouse, Muse, Feist, Silversun Pickups, Jimmy Eat World, Spoon and a surprise unannounced performance from the Killers.
Tonight in Rock: Muse, Silversun Pickups, David Gray

The Deadly Syndrome's Top Ten of 2007
I've always been intrigued by other "best of" lists, but this year I decided to take it to a whole new level. I e-mailed a handful of bands that I've seen this past year in order to unearth what exactly captivated them in '07. As music listeners, it is our duty to take a keen interest in our favorite musician's influences. After all, they rocked our little world, might as well see what rocked their...

Best Reality Concept Ever? + Random TV & Movie News
The premise of CBS' upcoming Kid Nation may be the BEST idea for a reality show I have ever heard in my entire life: a group of 8 to 15-year-olds are plunked in a remote locale and forced to create their own society. Awesome! So awesome that William Golding's estate ought to sue for residuals, right? Too bad spineless CBS execs already f*ed up the show by allowing kids to leave when they want and...
TV Junkie: The Retiring Bob Barker Is All Over CBS Tonight; Comedy Hottie Sarah Silverman on Kimmel (literally too, unfortunately)
A Word or 52: TV icon Bob Barker is retiring and is getting a big sendoff from CBS. Lost will be killing us by not giving us any additional info about Locke. Idol will knock another one off. There are no decent movies on TCM or IFC to go take refuge from regular broadcast TV tonight. LAist Reviews: Modest Mouse - We Were Dead...
We don't care what you think about Isaac Brock and by the tone of the psychotic laughter punctuating We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank's opening track ("March Into the Sea"), neither does he. Brock grew up in Issaquah, Washington, where he lived in a (reportedly not-so-shabby) trailer home with his parents, who were part of the Grace Gospel Church, which in some way was affiliated with the infamous Waco Branch Davidians. As...

Although it might be tempting to stay home tonight to watch the results come in, they won't all be in until early tomorrow morning. So do yourself a favor and look at that list. Look at it. That is probably the best lineup of shows we've seen in LA all year. If you don't see a show tonight, on a beautiful night, pretty much the last day of summer, then well... good. More beer...
