Reinventing Los Angeles: Today at 2

Occidental Professor Robert Gottlieb's latest book -- Reinventing Los Angeles: Nature and Community in the Global City -- is going to be awfully tempting to Angelenos who care about urban planning, the environment and social change. Get a taste when he reads today at Dutton's at 2pm -- and then ask the store to order a copy for you. more ›

Seattlest watches as a S.L.U.T. is born and Seattle Flickr users go nuts over a local art installation. A restaurant critic demands a Diner's Bill of Rights over a gnat next to her drink, and, in lieu of a Portlandist, Seattlest debates with itself over the identity of the Northwest's crown jewel. Seattlest also joins the guys from Fantagraphics for an ill-fated gun party in the woods. more ›

"Bomb Scare" or Bomb Scare?

Yesterday, 19-year-old MIT student Star Simpson walked into Terminal C at Logan Airport to meet her boyfriend. Everything was normal, except for the fact that she was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with a computer circuit board and wiring sewed or otherwise attached to the chest area. She also held play-doh in her hands. To her, it was art or just the dorky shirt she wore to bed and didn't change the next morning. To others, it was only a matter of time before police with automatic weapons appeared to take her down. more ›

AM news: MIT hackers, mom, power, danger

A cross-country rivalry: MIT students have stolen a cannon from CalTech and set it up on their campus, 3,000 miles away, adorned with an enormous MIT class ring. The hackers (the LAT calls them "pranksters") came to LA and dressed as workers from Howe & Ser Moving Company to liberate the cannon. Luckily, administrators aren't pissed. more ›

Phillyist notes a fistfight between local pols that leaves one man down for the count. Jehovah's Witnesses get a Philly contributor out of bed, things get a little geeky with a film festival and geeky gets taken to a whole new galaxy when they talk with the Dragon Queen of the Dark Kingdom. more ›

Watch Your Back, Massachusetts!

Watch Your Back, Massachusetts!

Proof that science fair kids know how to have fun: some enterprising Cal Tech students headed to MIT for pre-frosh week last week for some good natured pranking. Most inventive pranks? Outfitting new freshman with t-shirts mocking MIT and placing palm trees on the rooftop of the Big Dome. The Pasadena pranksters did it all in good fun and are hoping that MIT responds in kind by sending their own contingent to Cal Tech's campus soon. more ›
