Every once in a while, The New York Times decides to turn its attention to the Best Coast, and this week the Grey Lady suggested checking out this bubbling asphalt pit full of prehistoric (or as we Angelenos refer to it B.F.: Before Freeways) fossils that's right smack-dab in the middle of the Miracle Mile. Isn't that insane?!!

Three suspects pleaded not guilty on Thursday to felony charges in a series of robberies believed to be linked to the shotgun slayings of Gabriel Aron Ben-Meir, the 30-year-old MTV music coordinator gunned down by his home near Miracle Mile last month, and Marcelo Aragon who was killed in a residential area in the 2700 block of West 12th Street in April.
16,000 Ice Age Fossils Found at La Brea Tar Pits
Long before Los Angeles became synonymous with Hollywood movies and television the only drama in town was the traffic on the horse trail now known as the 101 freeway. But even before that -- tens of thousands of years ago -- the Miracle Mile's "Museum Row" was the domain of sabertooth tigers, ground sloths, and other giant, seemingly fantastical creatures of the last ice age.
Oprah to OWN LA or Just Create More Long Audition Lines?
Oprah Winfrey's new OWN network, headquartered in Miracle Mile, will launch on January 1st. Though the big premiere is only 11 days away, Winfrey has yet to hunker down in the Los Angeles offices which has raised questions about the viability of the channel, according to the LA Times.
The channel, aimed at helping people "live their best lives," has suffered from a host of challenges including three years of launch delays
Wilshire Blvd. Food Truck Battle Escalates: Boycott Signs Posted
The battle for lunchtime business on the Miracle Mile has moved to the next level, as an unidentified person or group of people has lobbed back with a call to retort, announced via signs left on the cars that are being parked there as part of an elaborate and orchestrated plan allegedly concocted by management at the Museum Square building.

Puppy Beaten Against Pole, Abandoned in Garbage Bag on Street
It's hard to fathom, but someone allegedly put a 3-month-old puppy in a plastic garbage bag and beat her against a pole on a street in LA's Miracle Mile area, according to KNX1070.
Another Day, Another DWP Pipe Blowout: Miracle Mile Edition
No definitive cause to the growing number of blowouts yet, but south of the Miracle Mile this morning was the next area added to a list that has topped 30 for this month alone. Around 6 a.m. a water main burst, flooding the streets and cutting off service to 40 to 50 LADWP customers. This comes after bursts in Encino and Hollywood Hills over the weekend.
LAPD Ticketing Twittering Food Trucks on Wilshire, Again?
Once again, workers along Wilshire Boulevard's Miracle Mile are witnessing an LAPD crackdown on the popular trucks that populate the area throughout lunchtime. One tipster, calling it a "raid," describes the scene in an e-mail:
Green Truck Cited by LAPD on Wilshire [Updated]
It only took four minutes for the LAPD to show up after The Green Truck's General Manager, Bobby Allen, pulled up to the curb on Wilshire for the lunch hour. The truck's health permit, although paid for, was not on display because the LA County Health Department was late in sending out bills and permits, explained Allen. But officers would not accept a note from the Health Department that should have excused the Green Truck from being cited and shut down. The truck can only open back up for business when they have proof they paid for the permit.
Petition Created Against Restaurants Who Call Police on Food Trucks
A handful of workers affected by the recent decrease in lunch options on the Miracle Mile have begun a petition to stop restaurants from calling city officials and police on "designer trucks" who park in the area.
"We, the undersigned request that the brick and mortar restaurants in the area known as Miracle Mile cease and desist from any attempt to impede or hinder any mobile food preparation units or food trucks from operating in the area," the petition reads.
Recession Obsession: Tandoori Tacos On The Miracle Mile
Cowboys and Turbans is a fusion restaurant that doesn't wear too many hats. Just two.
Fusing Mexican and Indian, this fast-enough food establishment has an impressive menu -- the likes of which I've not seen around our fare city. Tandoori quesadilla, masala fries, chicken or tofu naanwiches -- all of which sound delicious. Though I wouldn't know. Thanks to the wretched economy, I've only indulged in their happy hour tacos -- $1 each, mid-day to 6 p.m.
First Annual Yelp Restaurant Week Starts This Weekend
Apparently one Restaurant Week just isn't enough for Los Angeles: popular (and controversial) review site Yelp.com has announced their own "1st Annual Yelp Restaurant Week" starting this Saturday, May 30th. The kickoff event is being in conjunction with LACMA's Muse Artwalk. Participating restaurants include Tasca, Little Next Door, Luna Park, Messob Ethiopian, and Amalfi Ristorante, among others, all of whom will be offering a three-course prix-fixe for $15-30. Mention Yelp when making a reservation, and check out their website for more info.
Ice Melts Across the Southland
Yesterday at four different locations around the Los Angeles area, teams built ice structures, a re-creation of performance and installation artist Allan Kaprow's "Fluids." Yesterday, Kaprow's son helped build one of the structures in Pasadena's Memorial Park. LAist Featured Photos contributor Tom Andrews was there to catch it.
'Fluids' to be Built Friday at LACMA, then Melted
Since late March, performance art happenings have taken place all around Los Angeles. From students at USC dragging cement blocks in public right-of-ways to women licking jam off cars, the Allan Kaprow exhibit has extended beyond the gallery walls of the MOCA Geffen Contemporary gallery exhibit. Through the end of June, recreations from the pioneer of performance art will continue. And one of the larger scale pieces begins this weekend.
Whither Architecture in Los Angeles?
Could you imagine Los Angeles without the Getty Museum? If that serene white chunk of Italian marble nestled above the 405 suddenly removed its bulk to some other parts, would you notice? Would you care?
LAist Poll: 'Subway to Sea,' Wilshire or through WeHo?
The LA Times is reporting today that Metro may be seriously looking at an extremely different route for half of the proposed Purple Line subway extension that would take commuters from Downtown to Santa Monica. However, the idea discussed here would take underground riders from the Hollywood/Highland station to Wilshire Blvd. along Santa Monica Blvd., traveling through West Hollywood and Beverly Hills hitting near the Beverly Center mall and Cedars-Sinai:The new concept is still...
Los Abandoned @ TarFest, 10/7/07
"This is our last song ever," shouted Lady P, still catching her breath from the previous number. My friend and I exchanged strange looks as if it were the apocalypse and somehow we didn't get the memo. Perhaps the La Brea Tarpits were boiling over and about to suck us in or some crazy Toxic Avenger shit was about to go down. Turns out we did miss the memo, but lived to tell of...

The Lemonheads @ The El Rey, 4/25
If you're a dude you wanna hate Evan Dando for his flowing long locks and his runway model looks and his lack of irony of wearing an old school Lou Reed tshirt and Vans. But then he plugs in that SG and does his little stoney version of shredding and you sip your beer and chill the hell out. The Lemonheads are the Goo Goo Dolls without any aspiration. They're the sober man's Replacements....
