Photo of Carter Tanton by Amanda Zee Carter Tanton of Tulsa always gets rave reviews about his voice like this one from Pitchfork: "Lead singer Carter Tanton has a spectacular voice... [he] could probably sing a recipe for chocolate éclairs and still make it sound good." And Rolling Stone said "his indie-seraphim voice is not of this world." Both reviews referenced the similarities to My Morning Jacket. And not to forget the band, the......

Bargain airliner Skybus is adding a route into Burbank's Bob Hope Airport starting Monday. The airline has two US hubs, and has been operating flights to and from the one in Columbus, Ohio for some time now, and is now linking BUR with its other hub in Greensboro, North Carolina. The big draw with Skybus is that they sell ten seats on every flight for $10 each (plus all those pesky fees and taxes, of......

Lakers 106, Bobcats 97 - The Lakers are 4-1 since acquiring Pau Gasol, playing a little cat-and-mouse last night in Charlotte. After allowing the Bobcats to cut a 13 point lead to 3, Kobe put it away in the closing minutes. He had 31 points, his third game in a row over the 30 mark. Gasol contributed 26 despite a cold ... Three losses in a row. A close loss in Milwaukee. A thrashing at the hands of the Boston. Then losing a 14-point lead and the game to New Jersey. That’s what last week brought the Lakers, pain and misery. And now a 7-6 record after a promising start. But like all things in Lakerdom, it all gets blown out of proportion. Some Lakers fans are running around like Chicken Little after these losses saying it's......

So Barry Bonds hit his big dinger last night, and we hate him for it. But we're allowed to, we live in LA. The Commissioner of Baseball, however, is not allowed to hate Barry Bonds. At least not publicly. Why? Because the Commish is supposed to be fair and without allegiance. All he is supposed to care about is Baseball's Best Interest. But clearly Bud Selig only has one interest: money. The former used......

Which team has the best record in the National League? Two teams share this distinction: the Milwaukee Brewers and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Yes, the same Los Angeles Dodgers team I ripped in my last post has the best record in the National League. Actually I take that back. This is not the same team I ripped the other day. In Friday’s 6-3 win against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Grady Little posted this......

On a day of magnificent feats when Detroit Tiger’s 24-year old pitcher Justin Verlander pitched a no-hitter against the Milwaukee Brewers, the Dodgers managed to top that. They exploded with three consecutive homers on three consecutive pitches against the New York Mets in the second inning. Don’t get me wrong. Verlander’s no-no was absolutely amazing. In the ninth inning, he was still pitching strikes at 102 mph. And given the blustery conditions at Comerica......

With the Dodgers playing a rather boring series at the Washington Nationals, it’s time to take care of some housecleaning. All Star Voting Yesterday, Major League Baseball released the preliminary results of the first period of fan voting for the All Star Game. The fan votes will determine which position players start the game. According to the results, My Boyfriend is running a distant fourth to the fiery whoring gambler Paul Lo Duca (former......

Ducks 4, Red Wings 3 - Everybody thought hockey in Orange County was like a snowball in hell: Funny to say, totally unrealistic, and full of cliche (remember those "Mighty" days?). Well, it's starting to get a little chilly down south. The Ducks knocked of the "Mighty" Red Wings in six games, surviving a three goal scoring barrage by Detroit in the third period. Anaheim will host the Ottawa Senators in game one of the......

Brewers 9, Dodgers 5 - When your dad is a baseball icon, how do you step out of his shadow? If you're Tony Gwynn, Jr. and Prince Fielder, you pick up a bat and pummel the Dodgers. Actually, Milwaukee has been pummelling everybody lately -- the Blue Crew were just the latest victim. Gwynn capped a big sixth inning for the Brew Crew with a two run double, and Fielder went yard twice to tie......

Roughly one month into the season, and the Los Angeles Dodgers are within 2 games of the best record in Major League Baseball. What team began play today with the best record? Why the Milwaukee Brewers, of course. Pretty amazing game at Chavez Ravine last night. 48,995 (announced) fans watched the Dodgers come from behind and beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-3 on a dramatic 10th-inning grand slam by Russell Martin. Better Known Friends of the Column, Joe Beimel (pitched a scoreless 8th against the heart of the Pirate order) and Wilson "El Gato" Valdez (scored the tying run in the bottom of the 9th on some aggressive baserunning, pictured), also contributed heartily to......

Clippers 118, Lakers 110 - Go big or go home, but what if both teams are already home? Then both teams go big. Kobe had another 50 point night and nine rebounds, but was upstaged by Corey Maggette's career high 39 to go with eight rebounds and nine assists and Elton Brand's 32 with 12 rebounds and seven assists. Dodgers 3, Rockies 0 - Brad Penny threw 108 pitches in 6 and 1/3 innings, striking out 3 and walking 4. The most important number he had was the Rockies'. Penny earned his sixth straight win against Colorado and is 11-2 lifetime. He retired 11 straight batters before hitting Chris Iannetta on his final pitch. Takashi Saito earned his fifth save in five tries. Angels 4, Indians 1 - Still playing in Milwaukee thanks to......

Indians 7, Angels 6 - If you haven't been glued to ESPN or the Weather Channel, you might not have noticed that snow postponed the Indian's first home series. Getting desperate for a balmier climate, they opted to play their next set in Wisconsin. You could guess there would be some great signs in a game played in Milwaukee between Los Angeles and Cleveland. Things turned out pretty well for the quasi-home crowd. The teams......

I am a complete nerd. I’ve always been enthralled by scorekeeping. I always wanted to learn how to do it so I could keep track of who does what and be able to capture everything that happens in a game on paper. So years later I can look at this sheet of paper and sort of relive the game. For Sunday’s game, I decided to make my first stab at keeping score. I was......

Clippers 90, Lakers 82 -  LA's teams seem like they're headed in opposite directions. Kobe had 29, but the Clippers had five players in double digits. After the showdown at Staples, the Clippers have won seven of eight while the Lakers have dropped four of their last five. Both teams sit towards the bottom of the playoff field, with the Clippers (now a .500 team) only trailing their arena mate by a game and a half.......

Well after two games, there's sure a lot to wallow in. New acquisitions Luis Gonzalez and Juan Pierre are 0-for-15. Starting pitchers Derek Lowe and Randy Wolf have combined for a not-so-stellar 9.00 ERA in 10 innings. And Rafael Furcal remains mired on the disabled list with a sprained ankle (not necessarily the best of injuries for a speedy lead-off hitter). However, as Rocky Balboa mentioned to Clubber Lang repeatedly in the third round......

Brewers 4, Dodgers 3 - The bums are playing like it. But they can still go 160-2, right? We'll find out on Wednesday when ace Jason Schmidt takes the mound. Angels 8, Rangers 3 - Anaheim is off to a great start, and guess what? The bullpen didn't allow a run in 3 and 2/3 innings. Sammy Sosa was held to 1 for 4. Brewers 7, Dodgers 1 - Ben Sheets hurled a complete game two hitter, facing about as many batters in 9 innings as Dodger starter Derek Lowe did in 4. Read the highly optimistic LAist take here. Angels 4, Rangers 1 - It's not that Texas didn't have any opportunitites, it's just that Anaheim didn't let them capitalize. The Angels allowed eight men to reach scoring position, four on third base, but none of them made......
