There's a rumor going around A's circles that Milton Bradley has super powers, chief among them the ability to cause otherwise sensible general managers to trade him for valuable prospects, in this case, Andre Ethier. Ethier's had some very good moments in a Dodger uniform lately, including his 4-5 night in Monday's 10-4 pounding of the Snakes, and a solo homer in yesterday's 5-4 victory. Brad Penny notched a career-best 10-2 start with yesterday's win.

The series' oddest moment no doubt came in Tuesday's 11-3 blowout, a game in which Nomar Garciaparra got hit by pitches three different times by three different pitchers. As is required by custom, retaliation came against ex-Dodger Shawn Green, but Danys Baez hit Luis Gonzalez the next day; in all, seven batters got plunked in three games, an unusually high total.

If you've been putting off seeing the "Masters of American Comics" exhibit that is occurring simultaneously at the MOCA downtown, and at UCLA's Hammer Museum in Westwood, then put it off no further. You only have about two weeks remaining before this show leaves our city. LAist has seen this exhibit, and it is truly stunning. Our highlights were seeing so much of Jack Kirby's original artwork in the flesh, the man had such a command of the comic book superhero style. Counter that with Chris Ware's often melancholy portaits of American life, and it really spans the whole breadth of the medium. The breakdown is - Winsor McCay, Lyonel Feininger, George Herriman, E.C. Segar, Frank King, Chester Gould, Milton Caniff, and Charles M. Schulz at the Hammer Museum, and Will Eisner, Jack Kirby, Harvey Kurtzman, R. Crumb, Art Spiegelman, Gary Panter, and Chris Ware at MOCA.

That question was answered yesterday when it was reported that shortstop Cesar Izturis will undergo Tommy John surgery in his right elbow, and is likely out until July 2006. This is a rather stunning development because usually pitchers are the only ones to endure such a dramatic procedure.

If there was ever a reason to keep Milton Bradley, this should eliminate it.

The only positive about this is that the stupid squabble between Bradley and Jeff Kent will come to an unceremonious halt. Otherwise, this will have a devastating effect on the Dodgers slim playoff hopes. Bradley is one of the few quality hitters in a lousy lineup, and plays fantastic defense in centerfield. The Dodgers struggles this season peaked during the two months he was on the DL with a finger injury. We don't see the team getting any better now.

As the trade deadline rapidly approaches, the Dodgers find themselves 8.5 games behind the Padres in the NL West with a pathetic 41-52 record. Paul DePodesta now has to decide if the Dodgers will become buyers or sellers over the course of the next 10 days. LAist recommends the latter.

Now, LAist knows not to make too much of a great early season start. But consider that the Dodgers have managed to play fantastic baseball without Eric Gagne, Brad Penny, or Wilson Alvarez yet. To all of those Dodger doubters, who think using new innovations and technologies to build a baseball team is foolish, you can admit that Paul DePodesta probably knew what he was doing. Even ESPN Analyst and Moneyball doubter Harold Reynolds publicly apologized on Baseball Tonight.

Coming through with the game-winning hit was Milton Bradley, who claims anger management classes have put him in gear. It was also great to see new Giants closer Armando Benitez get lit up in the ninth, perhaps a sign that he'll become the Dodgers new best friend.

At first glance this move is cause for celebration for Sparks fans (if there are any Sparks fans). Holdsclaw brings instant star power, and could form a dynamic duo with Lisa Leslie. But while there was once a time when everyone thought Holdsclaw would take over women's basketball, it hasn't quite worked out that way.

Scott Erickson of all people will take the hill for the Azul, as Mr. Lisa Guerrero desperately seeks a Major League job again.

LAist confesses that its always been a Derek Lowe fan. The guy has great stuff, and rose to the occasion in the postseason this year for the Red Sox. But $36 million for Lowe seems excessive for a guy who has basically had one good year as a starter. So why are the Dodgers guaranteeing him four years?

According to ESPN's Peter Gammons and The Sporting News' Ken Rosenthal, Adrian Beltre has signed a five-year contract with the Seattle for somewhere between $60 and $65 million.

They did.

This Dodgers team has been absolutely incredible. Despite a pitching rotation which has been in tatters in all season long, the Dodgers have managed a whopping 53 come-from-behind wins, and 16 when trailing after 8 innings. Talk about clutch.

Welcome to the new era of Dodger baseball. Offense is now in.

Oh well. You can't blame Paul DePodesta and Frank McCourt for not trying. As the mainstream baseball media would say, this they "want to win."

These are tough times for the Los Angeles Dodgers. They just went through their second long losing streak of the season, finally beating the Angels 10-5, but find themselves three and a half games behind the Giants and in third place.
