Tonight NY-based experimental rockers the Present will be headlining Spaceland with LA-based singer-songwriter Julia Holter in tow. Earlier in the day local Country troubadour Mike Stinson is poised to grace the Echo. And, lastly, local experimental electronic act Anavan will be helping Massachusetts' own Math the Band ring in their latest disc at the Smell. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Hotel Café to catch local jazz-infused pop duo Alex & Sam (LAist Interview, Review).

Tonight In Rock: Erykah Badu, Dredg, Justin Townes Earle, Mike Stinson

Tonight Los Gatos-based prog rockers Dredg will be concluding a sold-out two-night stint at the Troubadour with Miami's own metal heads Torche in tow. Nashville-based country singer-songwriter Justin Townes Earle is poised to take on McCabe's Guitar Shop in Santa Monica. And, lastly, local country troubadour Mike Stinson is poised to rock early on at Redwood Bar & Grill in Downtown. But we strongly suggest heading over to UCLA Intramural Field to catch the opening night of the Jazz & Reggae Festival. Not only will legendary multiple Grammy Award-winning soul singer-songwriter Erykah Badu be gracing us with her presence, but LAist favorites De La Soul, Nino Moschella and People Under the Stairs will be performing as well.

Tonight: Vetiver, Silversun Pickups, La Roux, Mike Stinson

Tonight San Franciscan folk rockers Vetiver will be taking on a two-night stint at the Center for the Arts in Eagle Rock with none other than Oregon-based singer-songwriter Richard Swift. London-based electro-pop duo La Roux are slated to headline the Roxy with LAist favorite, local instrumental duo El Ten Eleven. And, lastly, around mid-day LA-based country troubadour Mike Stinson will be gracing Redwood Bar & Grill. But we strongly suggest trekking all the way out to the Glass House to catch local buzz band Silversun Pickups, who are poised to release their forthcoming sophomore effort Swoon this coming Tuesday.

Tonight In Rock: Mike Stinson, Tina Dico, Go West Young Man, Eliot Lipp

Tonight famed Zero 7 vocalist Tina Dico will be gracing the Roxy in Hollywood. Local country troubadour Mike Stinson is poised to play early on at Redwood Bar & Grill for this week's edition of Brunch Americana. And, lastly, LA-based rock outfit Go West Young Man will be playing at All Star Lanes in Eagle Rock. But we strongly suggest heading over to Jimmy's Lounge to catch Brooklyn-by-way-of-LA electronic mastermind Eliot Lipp, among many others, for Ghostly International's 10th Anniversary extravaganza.

Tonight In Rock: Fujiya & Miyagi, Mike Stinson, Les Blanks, Jockpit

Tonight local country troubadour Mike Stinson will be performing at Redwood Bar & Grill in Downtown. LA-based indie rock trio Les Blanks are poised to play the Silver Lake Lounge. And, lastly, Jockpit, which features members of No Age, Friends Forever and Kyle H. Mabson, will be making noise at the Smell. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Echoplex to catch Brighton-based krautrockers Fujiya & Miyagi. English psych pop singer-songwriter Pop Levi is slated to kick the show off.

Tonight In Rock: The Music Tapes, Saint Motel, The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra, Mike Stinson

Tonight the Music Tapes, a NY-based experimental indie-pop project of Elephant Six member Julian Koster, will be performing at the Echoplex. LA's own indie rockers Saint Motel (LAist Interview) are slated to rock Spaceland. And, lastly, local country troubadour Mike Stinson will be headlining an early show at the Echo. But we strongly recommend heading over to All Star Lanes in Eagle Rock to catch the Flying Tourbillon Orchestra (LAist Review, #2). LAist favorites Marvelous Toy, Radars to the Sky (LAist Review, #2, #3, #4) and Death to Anders (LAist Review) are poised to kick off the show.

Tonight virtuosic R&B singer-songwriter John Legend will be performing at the Gibson Amphitheatre. Hawaiian-born singer-songwriter Sara Lov is continuing her month-long residency at Spaceland with LAist favorites Learning Music. If you missed Norwegian rock songstress Ida Maria last night, then you can catch her one last time at the Viper Room. And, lastly, it's beginning to appear as though country artist Mike Stinson is to Redwood Bar & Grill as Jon Brion is to Largo; He's practically playing any given day of the month. But we urge you to head over to the Echoplex to catch Eastside buzz band Warpaint's record release show. LA locals Brother Reade (LAist Interview, Review) and Crooked Cowboy are slated to kick off the show.

As we approach Christmastime the generally vast pool of shows shrinks to nothing. Tonight Mike Stinson will headline the Redwood Bar & Grill with a few other country troubadours. And Japanese singer-songwriter Ed Masuga is slated to perform at the Silver Lake Lounge. But—unless you're frantically wrapping presents still—we strongly suggest checking into the Hyperion Tavern to see Oakland's own alt-rockers the Blank Tapes.

Tonight Rockford-based rockers Cheap Trick will kick off a two-night stint at the House of Blues Sunset. Local fringe rock outfit the Movies (LAist Review, #2) are slated to continue their Monday Night Residency at Spaceland. And, lastly, Mike Stinson is headlining a country-centric bill at the Echoplex. But we recommend stopping by the Echo to catch the Manimal Vinyl Residency. Local experimental folk rockers Gangi (LAist Review) will be fusing beats, sound bites and a distinctive nasal tenor. Besides, you're probably all Movies-ed out by now—if that's even possible.

Last Friday when A-Trak and Kid Sister played at New York City's Natural History Museum, Kanye West made a surprise visit. Fri 6/2 - Mike Stinson / Flash Express / Stax of Women @ El Cid ($7) – Mike Stinson is one of LA’s finest practitioners of honky tonk music. He’s obviously a huge Gram Parsons fan, but also pays tribute to Parsons’ heroes like Merle Haggard and Buck Owens. Dwight Yoakam opened his Population Me album with Stinson’s “The Late Great Golden State.” His extremely talented guitarist, Tony Gilkyson (X, Lone Justice) has an effortless style that’s absorbing live. If you like Jon Spencer’s high energy garage-blues, then check out The Flash Express. Download “The Beat That Kills” Stax of Women is a talented cover band that keeps changing their name. The members have big record collections, so they’ll pleasantly surprise you. Or if you’re a Journey fan, check out Infinity at Spaceland.

Fri 5/12 - The Bellrays @ Safari Sam’s ($10) – This is a great opportunity to see Riverside’s The Bellrays play a new venue with great sound. There are plans to modify the stage to give soulful singer Lisa Kekaula even more room to strut around. With her huge voice, stage presence and the tight rock band, it promises to be a high energy night. Congratulations to the winner of our ticket giveaway. If you prefer country-rock, go see Mike Stinson @ the Mint. If you want to keep up on rock bands that the bloggers love, go see Birdmonster @ Spaceland.

We hope everybody had a great time at Coachella. Really. Secret Machines is the pick of the week.......
