'Beavis and Butt-Head' Are BACK & 'Dumber Than Ever'

In case you haven't heard or have banned MTV from your life, "Beavis and Butt-Head" have been revived and are gracing the network with their infectious laughs, crass humor, extreme stupidity and fart jokes. The series returned on October 27 and airs Thursdays at 10pm. Huh-huh-uh-huh, cool. more ›

DVD Tuesday: (223) Days of Her

DVD Tuesday: (223) Days of Her

Having just gotten out of a relationship which had eerie parallels to (500) Days of Summer, I have no intention of seeing it anytime soon. You should, though. It's wonderfully melancholy and real (excepting the amazing musical sequence with the animated musical bird). I was thrilled to see that District 9 made such a large impact at the box-office. It gives hope to those of us who are tired of seeing nothing but pre-packaged concepts that have been given virtual body-cavity searches by the studios' risk-management trolls. more ›

Box Office Review: Meh...

The Labor Day weekend is typically a slow time for the movie business as everyone makes one final attempt to catch some elusive summer magic (e.g. sleep with unattainable lust object). As such, The Final Destination was the best of a weak bunch as it nabbed $12.4M ($47.5M) to top the weekend box office. Terrible newcomer All About Steve finished a reasonably close second ($11.2M) just ahead of the steady Inglourious Basterds ($10.8M | $91M). Gamer disappointed in its debut ($9M) as audiences showed a rare flash of sound judgment. more ›

Weekend Movie Guide: New Mike Judge!

             + 8 more

Is it just me or is there a surprising lack of public excitement about the release of Extract? I mean, Mike Judge and Jason Bateman working together on a film? Either one of these guys pulls me into a theater, but both together-- that's nirvana. On the other hand, is anyone looking forward to Gamer? Gerard Butler is rapidly squandering the capital he earned back when he was just a working actor. If you don't know what I mean, watch how great he was in Dear Frankie. Hell, he was even good in Timeline and that movie blew! more ›

LAist Film Calendar: Anniversaries Aplenty: Temple, Blair, Sirk & Priscilla...of Doom!

You're once, twice, three times an Indy...and I loooooove you! Temple of Doom turns 25 this year, and serves itself up every day this weekend. Friday, Temple's a la carte at Cafe Minuit Fairfax, Sunday nets you a side of Raiders at the New Bev, or an organic Indy combo (hold the cubic zirconium) Saturday at the Aero! Surprisingly, not a single guest is in sight (come on, what's Short Round really up to these days?) - for that one must turn 50, as with Douglas Sirk's Imitation of Life. Academy-nominated starlets Susan Kohner & Juanita Moore reminisce over a ravishing new film print, joined by Kohner's son, Paul Weitz. Or you just need to be associated with The Blair Witch Project; directors, producers & the entire cast are set to celebrate the film's 10th anniversary at the Egyptian. Probably the only way they could fill the theater. more ›

New DVD Tuesday - Idiocracy, Mad Cowgirl, Crank, The Illusionsit, Barnyard, Psychopathia Sexualis, I Trust You To Kill Me

As usual, New DVD Tuesday is a day late, but here it is anyway. Idiocracy - It's no Office Space (then again, what is?), but this wry satire of anti-intellectualism and pop culture directed by Mike Judge is well worth watching. Luke Wilson stars as a barely average Joe who wakes up 500 years in the future to discover he's the smartest man alive. Maya Rudolph and Dax Shepard co-star, but the scene stealer... more ›

Idiocracy... read the script "they" won't let you see!

Idiocracy... read the script "they" won't let you see!

Mike Judge's latest movie, Idiocracy (a title that's never been more apt given our current government), may only be playing at the Arclight for a few more days, but thanks to the folks at Freewebs you can download and peruse the script for all eternity. Written by Judge and Etan Cohen (not to be confused with Ethan Coen), the 110-page script should at least give you a taste of the film's satire. Check it... more ›

Film Review: Idiocracy

Film Review: Idiocracy

Idiocracy is currently the best movie in America that no one's ever heard of. That doesn’t mean Idiocracy is great, but it certainly deserves better than the shabby treatment it's received from 20th Century Fox, which seems to have unceremoniously dumped the movie into unsuspecting theaters with a promotional budget approximating that of a typical Saturday night beer run. When it comes to screwing over Mike Judge, Fox has a tradition to uphold. Two... more ›
