FYF Fest - LA State Historic Park - 9/5/09 - Part 1

FYF Fest - LA State Historic Park - 9/5/09 - Part 1

At the end of Fucked Up’s powerful, frenetic set, frontman Pink Eyes looks out at the crowd and says something along the lines of “You can say we played the Hipster Woodstock. You can say we play punk rock. One thing I know, my hips are in a state of shock.” It’s actually a fitting summary of last Saturday’s FYF festival - whose crowd is a healthy cross-section of young hipsters, and aging punk rockers with bad hips. I’m not entirely sure of the significance, but there seems to be a poetic irony in the proliferation of teenagers in Black Flag T-shirts and forty-somethings in Vivian Girls T-shirts. more ›

Tonight, as always, local multi-instrumentalist/producer extraordinaire Jon Brion (LAist Interview, #2, Review) will be jamming with friends at the Largo at the Coronet. Brazilian-bred singer-songwriter Céu is poised to grace the Roxy. And, lastly, local noise/punk outfit Mika Miko (LAist Review) will be headlining the Smell in Downtown with Audacity in tow. But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland to catch Portland's own folk rockers the Builders and the Butchers (LAist Interview). LAist favorites Illinois and Eastern Conference Champions are slated to kick things off. more ›

Sussex-based pop rockers Keane are poised to headline the Hollywood Palladium. NY's own faux French indie rockers Nous Non Plus (LAist Interview) will be gracing Spaceland. And, lastly, local noise/punk outfit Mika Miko (LAist Review) will be ringing in their debut album at the Smell with none other than the Soft Pack. Although we recommend attending the aforementioned show, we strongly suggest heading over to the Henry Fonda Music Box to catch North Carolina's crown jewel: bluegrass-infused folk rockers the Avett Brothers. Chicago-based lo-fi/alt-country outfit Magnolia Electric Co. are slated to kick things off. more ›

Prolific San Franciscan singer-songwriter Jonah Matranga is poised to grace the Hotel Café. And, lastly, LA-based indie rockers Divisadero are playing with Daniel Brummel (of Ozma) at All Star Lanes in Eagle Rock for the Bowling & Drinking Club. Tonight In Rock: The B-52's, Minus The Bear, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, Charlie Wadhams

Tonight In Rock: The B-52's, Minus The Bear, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, Charlie Wadhams

We haven't seen a Sunday like this since the summertime. We've got Athens-based new wave rock band the B-52's performing at Club Nokia in Downtown. Seattle's own experimental rockers Minus the Bear will be coming through the Henry Fonda Music Box with our favorite Raleigh-based indie pop group, the Annuals. LA locals Tigers Can Bite You are slated to rock at the Alterknit Lounge at the Knitting Factory. And, lastly, singer-songwriter Charlie Wadhams will be continuing his month-long Sunday Night Residency at Tangier. Word on the street is that Tangier will be closing its doors soon due to financial woes. But how could anyone turn down the Part Time Punks Festival at the Echo and Echoplex compound? Not only will some of LA's prominent fringe acts be playing (The Muslims, Mika Miko, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti), but living legends like Manchester's A Certain Ratio will be headlining the predominantly punk-tinged extravaganza. It will be the band's first performance in the US since 1985—the year I was born. more ›

Tonight In Rock: The Faint, Xu Xu Fang, Shiny Toy Guns, Apes & Androids

Tonight In Rock: The Faint, Xu Xu Fang, Shiny Toy Guns, Apes & Androids

Now that the election is over with the show-going commences. Tonight we've got electro sensation-turned-dud the Faint playing at the Wiltern with LA-based noise rockers Mika Miko. And speaking of shoddy electro-pop, we've got Shiny Toy Guns performing a KROQ-related contest-only event at the Viper Room. And, lastly, Brooklyn-based rock quintet Apes & Androids will be stopping by Spaceland for CLUB NME. But Portland's own folk rockers Musee Mecanique will be playing at Bordello with LA locals EXITMUSIC, Xu Xu Fang and Voice On Tape. Go, go, go! more ›

Tonight In Rock: Cut Copy, The Mars Volta, Abe Vigoda, Mika Miko

Tonight In Rock: Cut Copy, The Mars Volta, Abe Vigoda, Mika Miko

Tonight LA will be seized by festivals. Now in its third year, the LA Weekly's Detour Festival will be taking over the area around City Hall in Downtown. We're excited for Aussie electro-pop sensation Cut Copy, epic LA-based prog-rockers the Mars Volta, English folk rockers Noah and the Whale and DFA Records's latest and greatest, Hercules and Love Affair. The lineup is enticing, but certainly not for everyone. We had a rather traumatic experience last year involving Justice and drunken buffoons. It did not go over well. The 10th Annual Eagle Rock Music Festival, which takes place on Colorado Blvd. between Eagle Rock Blvd. and Argus St., boasts some 74 acts on 16 stages—the most comprehensive bill of local bands we've ever seen. We're excited for Abe Vigoda, Mika Miko (LAist Review), the Antarcticans, Gangi (LAist Review), and the Ship Collective's mainstay Earlimart. Need we mention that it's still free? And although it will be our festival pick of the night, we'd like to suggest a show for those who aren't interested in crowds. Head on over to Spaceland to catch Brooklyn-based folk songstress Rio en Medio. Tonight will serve as the record release party for her second full-length, Frontier. It will be the start of what promises to be a very successful career. more ›

Weekend Live Music Picks

Fri 6/9 - Silversun Pickups / Film School @ the Echo ($10) – The Silversun Pickups drop their debut full-length, Carnavas, on July 25th on Dangerbird Records. The record is consistently strong and they're one of the handful of local bands with a really good chance of blowing up this year. Expect to hear a few Smashing Pumpkins comparisons in the reviews (classic Gish/Siamese Dream-era Pumpkins). San Francisco’s Film School frequently gets favorably compared to your favorite Manchester bands. more ›

Revolution Girl Style Now (and Back Then)!

Revolution Girl Style Now (and Back Then)!

Maybe LAist should forgive the punk rock beer gut boys who, after watching a documentary in which girls talked about the frustrations of being in the scene and having to stand in the back while tall boys with greasy long hair crowded the stage in their aggro immature style, packed in in front of Mika Miko during the reception. At least they took the time to come to see the flick. Maybe not. Coming to a film based on these Bikini Kill lyrics and then being an inconsiderate doof is just not cool. Boys are poop, sometimes. more ›
