Earthquake in Santa Monica Bay Unrelated to 7.2 Quake

The earthquake just off the coast of Malibu and Santa Monica yesterday afternoon was unrelated to the larger one that occurred less than hour before. At 4:10 p.m., a minor 3.0 quake (LA Times said it was upgraded to 4.1) shook in the Santa Monica Bay. As usual, rarely-felt microquakes have been hitting the Los Angeles area daily, such as a small one this morning in Castaic and another one on Saturday in Northridge. more ›

Earthquake Swarm Continues in Redlands [Updated]

It's been nearly a week of shaky ground out in the San Bernardino County city of Redlands. Since Wednesday, when we counted around 75 small quakes since the previous Saturday, there's been around 40 more quakes of varying, but inconsequential sizes, including a few over 3.0, which the USGS takes slightly more seriously on their listings by marking them in a bolded red. A 11:53 a.m. there was a light 3.4 earthquake, followed by a 3.3 a minute later. Then at 11:57, another 3.3, among a handful of other microquakes. 5.8 Earthquake Strikes Near Border, Buildings 'Sway' in San Diego

It's been a shaky day. The Death Valley area had a nice 3.6 earthquake earlier this morning, but the U.S.-Mexico border takes the cake. A 5.8 earthquake struck at 10:48 a.m. on the Mexico side some 20 miles from Mexicali in Baja Mexico and Calexico in California. It's been followed by various aftershocks: a 4.9 at 10:53 a.m., a 4.0 at 11 a.m., a 3.4 at 11:04 a.m., a 3.0 at 11:12 a.m. and a 2.7 microquake at 11:17 a.m. We've seen no reports of damage or casualties yet, but "buildings briefly swayed in San Diego"--about 100 miles away--reported The Desert Sun. more ›

Small Earthquake Shakes Near Granada Hills, Chatsworth

A 1.5 magnitude earthquake shook in the Santa Susana Mountains, north of Granada Hills, Porter Ranch and Chatsworth, this morning. The 9:41 a.m. shaker is considered a microquake and is usually only felt by those extremely close to the epicenter. A 1.6 microquake struck near Newhall in the Santa Clarita Valley this morning. The 7:33 a.m. shaker was located in the San Gabriel Mountains, equidistant from Newhall in the Santa Clarita Valley and the city of San Fernando. 3.1 Earthquake Shakes San Bernardino County, 2.6 in the OC

More little quakes to get you thinking about being prepared. A minor 3.1 magnitude earthquake struck near Trona, some 30 miles from Ridgecrest, in San Bernardino County at 4:59 p.m. Thus far, there have been no reports of damge or injuries and one reported aftershock, a 1.4 shaker, less than 10 minutes later. Earlier at 2:14 p.m., a 2.6 magnitude microquake struck off the coast of Orange County, near Laguna Beach and Dana Point. A 1.4 magnitude earthquake struck 9 miles south of downtown Los Angeles in the Willowbrook area at 7:44 a.m. this morning. That low magnitude of a quake is probably equivalent to feeling like someone shut the door with force in the house next door. The land of Bruce and Bon Jovi is Full of...wimps. Southern California is no stranger to daily microquakes. In fact, just in the past week, we've had 15 of them. But when a quake shakes the bridge and tunnel crowd--like the 3.0 quake did last night--they freak. Via Gothamist, the Star-Ledger reports, "It sounded like an explosion, houses shook and dogs started barking." Other residents said it felt like a "bomb" and one man told WCBS 2, "I was upstairs on my computer, and all of a sudden I hear a boom, boom, boom, then a bang, bang, bang. My monitor almost fell off of my computer desk. So I immediately went downstairs to check on my grandma and ask her if she was alright or if she fell." more ›

At 7:14 a.m., a 4.0 magnitude earthquake shook near Loma Linda, CA, about 58 miles east of Downtown Los Angeles. "Viewers called in to say they felt the shaker, but there were no reports of damage or injuries," according to KNBC. Shortly before at 6:49 and 7:05 a.m., two 2.6 microquakes rattled the same area.
