LAPD Bicycle Police in Mexico City

Just in case you were wondering where your local bicycle patrol officer was... Some LAPD bicycle units were sent down to Mexico City to train local officers in bicycle crowd control and patrolling techniques, according to the Associated Press. It's part of a four-day course with the California Department of Justice. Let's hope they are leaving out this technique seen in the video below (scroll to 35 seconds):

As if the swing flu epidemic wasn't enough. A strong 6.0 earthquake struck south of Mexico City this morning. So far, there are no reports of deaths, major injuries or damage. People, who were asked to stay away from common areas and to wear masks, were forced out of their buildings and into the crowded streets.

LA, OC Still Swine Flu-Free, Residents Urged to Take Precautions

As of yesterday morning, only 20 cases of Swine Flu have been reported in the US, with 7 of those cases in California. However, there have been no cases logged in either Los Angeles or Orange counties, and local officials want to get the word out that they are working to prevent the infection from spreading.

I have to be very honest with you. I hate this time of the football season.

The Oscars are set to be announced tomorrow in Beverly Hills, but today, this Holiday day, the uber-California music festival experience will be announced. From Mexico City, no less.

Yesterday at a press conference with Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard regarding the renewal of a Sister City relationship, Mayor Villaraigosa went off topic, but with good reason: water woes could be ahead, according to the Daily News. With the fires, extreme water drought and light snowpack this year, water is tight. Earlier this summer, the mayor made a call for the public to voluntarily reduce water use, hoping for a 10% decrease (even...

An area of Mexico larger than metro LA is almost completely underwater after two days of severe flooding. Granted, we're busy fighting a Global War on Terror and it's inconvenient to help our neighbors, not to mention our own domestic needs, but... it's probably worth knowing that 80 percent of Tabasco is underwater. More rain is on its way. Our fires were on front pages around the world. So how come when Mexico experiences...

Hide the knives, Joan Didion: the Santa Anas are coming! The Santa Anas are coming! The new assistant director over at the Los Angeles branch of the FBI has experience in the domestic terror, white-collar crime, and foreign relations divisions; he has also spent time in Mexico City as an FBI legal attache. This week's Sign of the Apocalypse: kids as young as thirteen and fourteen are now getting into the paparazzi business. We...

Every Friday, LAist is taking you on a trip down to Orange County to uncover the unique dining experiences that await adventurous eaters willing to explore beyond the county line. I’ll just say it simply: LA rocks Mexican food. With the largest population of Mexicans outside of Mexico City based in the City of Angels, we are blessed with a preponderance of high-quality, authentic grub (at least based on my uneducated Chinese taste buds)....

We were distracted and didn't make it to our Tivos to check out the Miss Universe pageant until last night, but girlfriend, there was some drama on that show and no one seemed to have seen it. If you heard anything about the pageant, you may have heard that Miss USA slipped and fell during the evening gown competition. Well, that's true, and the video above shows you that. It also shows you that...

Pope Benedict yesterday, trying to impose whatever influence he has left on the world, threatened to excommunicate Catholic politicians if they aid in their support of abortion. He also said that they should not receive communion. The Pope was asked whether he supported Mexican Church leaders threatening to excommunicate leftist parliamentarians who last month voted to legalize abortion in Mexico City. "Yes, this excommunication was not an arbitrary one but is allowed by Canon...

Meet Daniel Hernandez, one of this LAist Interviewer's most elusive targets. He's only 25, but he's already an important voice in the Los Angeles media. Always on the go, we've been chasing him for an interview for the past year. We're glad our persistence paid off because Daniel has a keen sense about what's really interesting about this city. We first noticed Daniel's writing when he wrote a piece about the endangered graffiti art...

LA has 22 Sister Cities

Enjoy Coke: In Mexico City, Mexican soldiers opened up the cargo hold of a commercial flight from Venezuela and found 128 black suitcases marked "private." But they weren't feeling polite: in the cases they found 5.5 tons of cocaine, worth $100 million or more. Wow, those were some big suitcases.

The fifth day of the fifth month means celebration time for anyone with ties to Mexico, or an affinity for international holidays that involve hard liquor and good food. Here in LA, Cinco de Mayo is a hugely popular Fiesta time, and with the holiday landing on a Thursday, there's sure to be celebrations running through the weekend. In honor of 05/05/05, LAist would like to mention 5 great Mexican restaurants where you can get the eating portion of your party on. And, like we have been doing for the past couple of weeks, we ask you to holler out an "Ole!" on behalf of your own favorite. (Just don't dare mention Studio City's Mexicali; we hate that place with the fiery passion of a thousand suns.) In any event: Happy Cinco de Mayo!

September's Los Angeles Magazine highlights their own choices for the 25 Best Mexican Restaurants in all of LA.
