Vote, Vote: Taco Madness 2012 Down to Fateful Final 4!

We're jumping in the mix a little late in the action, since LA Taco's Taco Madness 2012 bracket-style showdown is in its "final four" stage, but there are still a few days left for you to have your say and speak up about who makes the best damn taco in Los Angeles. more ›

Zombie Jesus Angry, Make More Quakes

Over the last 12 hours another series of small earthquakes -- thought to be aftershocks from the 7.2 magnitude Mexicali Easter shaker -- have bobbled the California border. The largest quake, registering a 4.2 magnitude, occurred around 11 p.m. Friday evening near Ocotillo, the town of the 21 vehicle motorcycle tragedy of last month. more ›

5.8 Earthquake Strikes Near Border, Buildings 'Sway' in San Diego

It's been a shaky day. The Death Valley area had a nice 3.6 earthquake earlier this morning, but the U.S.-Mexico border takes the cake. A 5.8 earthquake struck at 10:48 a.m. on the Mexico side some 20 miles from Mexicali in Baja Mexico and Calexico in California. It's been followed by various aftershocks: a 4.9 at 10:53 a.m., a 4.0 at 11 a.m., a 3.4 at 11:04 a.m., a 3.0 at 11:12 a.m. and a 2.7 microquake at 11:17 a.m. We've seen no reports of damage or casualties yet, but "buildings briefly swayed in San Diego"--about 100 miles away--reported The Desert Sun. more ›

Studio City Says Goodbye to Koo Koo Roo, Chipotle Up Next

L.A.'s most awful restaurant chain, Koo Koo Roo, suffered a blow when it closed its prime Studio City location earlier this month. In its place will be a much more popular chain, Chipotle. Ventura Boulevard in the Southeast Valley is starting to get comfortable with Mexican fast-casual joints--Poquito Mas last year opened nearby in Sherman Oaks and Baja Fresh already has two locations. Also: Loteria Grill will soon move to Laurel Canyon/Ventura, adding another popular sit-down Mexican restaurant to the boulevard where Casa Vega and Mexicali already pack houses. more ›

A tunnel found Tuesday by Mexican authorities in Mexicali was probably going to be used to transport drugs to Calexico, CA. The tunnel had a mini rail system, ventilation (A/C as USA Today said), lighting and an electric lift at the shaft. It came within 130 feet of the U.S. Border. more ›

Mexicali? Or Porn Valley?!?

Mexicali? Or Porn Valley?!?

It was one of those lovely Sunday mornings down in the Valley: sunny and clear, not yet hot enough to send San Fernando-ists scurrying indoors towards the comfort of central air conditioning. We were looking for a casual and parent-friendly place along Ventura Boulevard to enjoy some lunch and a cold beer with our nearest and dearest. Mexicali Cocina Cantina seemed to fit the bill: reasonably priced, easy parking, and a wide array of... more ›
