Tonight!! British neo-soul for the jet-set ala Belleruche, KCRW live band o' the day The Naked & The Famous performing in the wilds of Echo Park, actor, director, model, musician Vincent Gallo's experimental, non-jammy, never to be recorded, improvised indulgencefest RRIICCEE at the El Rey, and Kitten (hopefully inspired by Kittens). There's also a RFSL Tuesday residency with The Californian at LaBrie's, Metric at Jimmy Kimmel Live, and that guy with a squeaky horn on my street selling corn. That's the sweetest music of all.
Tonight In Rock: Belleruche, Kitten, The Naked & The Famous, RRIICCEE feat. Vincent Gallo, Metric, The Californian
Metric and Cage the Elephant @ Gibson Amphitheatre 12/13/09
Sometimes, concert going does not go as well as one would hope. For instance, this reviewer had high hopes of bringing LAist readers the entire line-up of the KROQ Acoustic Christmas Night 2. Instead, I was kicked out for not having the right photo pass after Cage the Elephant's set.
Tonight In Rock: Phoenix, Chairlift, Monotonix, The Gaslamp Killer
Tonight Parisian buzz band Phoenix are poised to grace the Greek Theatre with Canadian indie rock outfit Metric (LAist Interview, Review) and local garage rockers the Soft Pack in tow. Israeli shock rock troupe Monotonix (LAist Review) are poised to take on the Smell in Downtown. And, lastly, San Diego-bred DJ the Gaslamp Killer will be on the decks at the Roxy. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Troubadour to catch Brooklyn-based indie pop outfit Chairlift (LAist Review). LAist's favorite, predominantly electronic one-woman-band Glasser is slated to kick things off.
Week In Rock: Blink 182, Phoenix, Arctic Monkeys, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart
This week legendary Poway-bred pop punk outfit Blink 182 will be headlining the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater with none other than Weezer, Taking Back Sunday and Asher Roth. Parisian buzz band Phoenix (LAist Review) are poised to grace the Greek Theatre with Canadian indie rock outfit Metric and local garage rockers the Soft Pack in tow. English alternative rockers Arctic Monkeys will be performing at the Hollywood Palladium with local pop rock outfit the Like. And, lastly, NY-bred indie pop act the Pains of Being Pure at Heart (LAist Interview) will be taking on the Troubadour.
Metric, Sebastien Grainger & The Mountains, and Band of Skulls @ Wiltern, 6/8/09
There were rumors circulating inside the Wiltern on Monday night that some people had shown up only to catch the sinister blues of Band of Skulls on their last night in Los Angeles before dashing across town to see another show. High praise, considering their album Baby Darling Dollface Honey only came out in March, tickets were $33 a pop, and the Band of Skulls went on at 8 (which meant getting there in rush hour traffic which is nothing to sneeze at). But man, oh man, was it worth it. The sparse outfit which included only a bass guitarist, guitarist and drums set the world on fire with their dark dirty London blues.
In a traditional black leather jacket, lead guitarist Russel Marsden smoked and sizzled with hair raising riffs which complemented Emma Richardson's smoky voice exactly. With her husky timber reminiscent of Joan Jett or Chrissy Hynde, and his slightly high resonance, their harmonies had a slightly androgynous quality. As if their voice belonged not to them, but to some multigendered seducer who was going to swoop down and fuck you senseless, no matter what your gender, sexual preference, or moral code as Matt Hayward's heavy, monster drums kept time. What I’m saying is that it felt good.
Tonight In Rock: Metric, Castledoor, Oliver Future, Jubilee Singers
Tonight Canadian indie rockers Metric (LAist Interview) will be headlining the Wiltern with former Death From Above 1979 drummer/vocalist Sebastien Grainger. Pasadena-based experimental indie pop outfit Jubilee Singers are poised to grace the Silver Lake Lounge. And, lastly, Oliver Future will be taking on yet another night of their Monday night residency with none other than Other Lives and Band of Skulls in tow. But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland to catch LA-based indie pop act Castledoor (LAist Review, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6), who will be continuing their month-long residency as well.

Lighting up to join the coping crowd
Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton What Is Free to a Good Home? Last Gang Records released, July 24, 2007 Emily Haines' (of Metric) latest EP What is Free to a Good Home? is by far her greatest solo work to date. I've always felt that her debut full length Knives Don't Have Your Back was hit or miss, mostly the latter. I expect a lot from Ms. Haines. The songs just weren't as hard...

Tonight in Rock in LA - Monsters are Waiting, Emily Haines
The hot babes have invaded LA today. Over at Hollywood & Highland they're throwing a free show with some bands that are easy on the ears and eyes, and then down the road at the Viper there's Metric's singer Emily Haines doing a solo performance to support her solo cd. If that's too sweet and mellow for you, the Knitting Factory is screening the new DVD of Bad Brains' 1982 CBGB shows -- and...
