Cisco Adler protégé and collaborator, Shwayze (seen to the left), is hitting up Redondo Beach tonight with his happier sounding indie hip-hop. He grew up in a trailer park... a trailer park in Malibu that is. “To me, it was the nicest trailer of all time," the 22-year-old musician says. He and Adler play at the Venezia Italian Grill and you can start your night in Malibu, riding the bus down with the gang (RSVPs required, see the MySpace flier).

LAist gets and listens to a Lot of music. You can see the bands we like in the concerts that we review, the Tonight in Rock listings that we compile, and in the cds that we review. But we realize that we listen to way more music than we review so we figured we make a list once a week letting you know what we're into. week ending 4/13/07 Rodrigo Y Gabriela - Self-Titled...
Say Goodbye to the Lava Lounge
Did you know the Lava Lounge is closing? Did you know bands aren't going to be playing there any more? Did you know they're going to renovate it into a real cocktail lounge? Did you know you only have a few more weeks to enjoy the Lava Lounge as you've enjoyed it for the last 13 years? Did you know that when LAist was a little more into the singles scene, let's say, the...

Tonight in Rock in LA - Mere Mortals, Submarines
Two of LAist's favorite bands are playing tonight. The (still) best unsigned LA band in LA, the Mere Mortals. And the happiest/saddest tunes ever from a married couple since the Carpenters, The Submarines.
Ken Layne's Top 10 Best Things about 2006
Do you hear the wind howling his name? Ken Layne is coming back to Los Angeles. That's why the gods are washing off the streets and blowing the smog aside. Wonkette's West Coast Bureau Chief began this year at the helm of the ridiculously funny and mindbogglingly weird Sploid. Instead of burning bridges, Nick Denton shuttered Sploid and moved the hilariously cranky Layne over to Wonkette in a rare move by the Gawker head,...
Tonight in Rock in LA - David Allen Coe, The Blood Arm, Brian Setzer, Motorcycle Boy, Push Star
Everyone loves an outlaw and David Allen Coe is as bad as they get. Practically born in prison, Coe has been slinging around racial epithets and dirty songs before it became trendy. And thanks to Red Peters and the fact that he can't be fined, Howard Stern has been playing one of Coe's classics "Fuckin in the Butt". Beneficiary of an opening spot from a recent Kid Rock tour, DAC is showing a new...

Currently the Mere Mortals are #3, just behind And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead 's "So Divided" (Interscope), and The Kooks' "Inside In/Inside Out (Astralwerks). They're outpacing such...
Mere Mortals: LA's Hottest Band is Unsigned

Their self-made "Rebel Radio" EP is climbing the FMQB charts that track national airplay on new music radio shows. Not only are the Mere Mortals the only unsigned band on the Single chart where they're #15, but they're #10 on the Album chart. Last year Napoleon Dynamite's Jon Gries (Uncle Rico) checked out...
