Tonight In Rock: Mark Kozelek, Menomena, The Chapin Sisters, Night Horse

Tonight Sun Kil Moon and Red House Painters front man, Ohio-bred folk rock singer-songwriter Mark Kozelek will be gracing Largo at the Coronet. Local pop-infused folk sister-duo the Chapin Sisters are poised to ring in their sophomore album, 2010's Two, at the Echo with none other than San Franciscan pop folk act the Finches and Los Angeles-by-way-of-North Carolina quartet Hi Ho Silver Oh. And, lastly, local rock quintet Night Horse will be taking on Spaceland. But we strongly suggest heading over to the El Rey Theatre to catch Portland's own experimental indie rock trio Menomena, who recently released their stunning, self-produced and self-recorded fourth album—2010's Mines. LAist favorites, Brooklyn quartet Suckers are slated to kick things off. more ›

Bumbershot

Bumbershot

Last Labor Day weekend I desperately needed to escape the disagreeable, torturous heatwave. So I made a last minute decision to fly to Seattle and bumbershoot. As luck would have it, my spontaneity provided for a much more temperate and rainless 70 degree haven. The Bumbershoot Festival has been running 37 years strong and every year it seems to progress into a bigger and better animal. Situated within the spacious Seattle Center amidst the... more ›

A Review of Five Concerts in Five Nights

Last week I went to five concerts in five nights. It was a strange and unusual experience. I will review each of the shows in a second. But first I would like to dedicate the reviews to two people. The first would be the to the guy who put those dollar bills into the urinal at the Troubadour during the Menomena show. Dear guy, I appreciate you challenging my values in regards to wealth.... more ›

Menomena @ Troubadour 6/12

Being a late arrival to the Menomena party and not knowing much about the trio from Portland before attending their sold out show at the Troubadour last night, except of course what LAist covered about them, I decided to bring my trusted BFF Russell Mills along to school me on their digital looping musical stylings. After a brief scare at the door, when some forgotten "paraphernalia" in my bag (which they searched) almost didn't... more ›

Ten Questions with Danny Seim of Menomena by Erin Scholz for LAist they have vocal harmonies which may have you convinced you're in the deep south, sitting in on a church choir practice....their songs range from punch-you-in-the-face rock, to tranquil and uplifting tracks that will put you in a kinder place...oh, and all held together by hip-hop inspired beats and baritone sax. wtf? wikipedia decribes them as 'experimental rock', pitchfork gave their latest album... more ›
