Tonight legendary Washington-bred hard rockers the Melvins will be taking on the Satellite, formerly known as Spaceland. Dallas' favorite alt-country sons the Old 97's are poised to headline the Music Box at the Henry Fonda Theater with none other than Brooklyn-based folk rock troubadour Langhorne Slim (LAist Review, #2).
And, lastly, Echo Park-bred indie rockers LA Font will be gracing Pehrspace. But we strongly suggest heading over the Echo to catch Minneapolis-based Peter Wolf Crier, an indie folk duo comprised of Peter Pisano (former Wilco frontman) and Brian Moan. LAist favorites, Duluth-bred rockers Retribution Gospel Choir are slated to kick things off.
Tonight In Rock: Melvins, Old 97's, Peter Wolf Crier, LA Font
Tonight In Rock: Ghostface, Melvins, Quantic And His Combo Bárbaro, Roadside Graves
Tonight Staten Island-bred rapper Ghostface Killah (LAist Review, #2) will be taking on two sets at the House of Blues Sunset with none other than Method Man and Redman, who will be performing together of course. Legendary Washington-bred hard rockers the Melvins are poise to grace the Wiltern. And, lastly, New Jersey's own country-infused folk act Roadside Graves will be performing at Spaceland with Le Switch and the World Record. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Echoplex to catch Quantic And His Combo Bárbaro, the latest musical endeavor from English musician/DJ/producer Will Holland. Beat Junkie founder/turntablist extraordinaire J.Rocc and DJ Nu-Mark, originally of Jurassic 5 fame, are slated to kick things off.
Monotonix's Top Ten of 2008
December is list-making season. And for us music journalists, it is a time to look back on scores of albums, reflect upon the music and recapitulate our favorites. But this year, just like the last, we took this opportunity to flip that tradition upside down, asking the artists that influenced us what influenced them. The prompt was not limited to albums that came out in 2008.
Mudhoney, The Melvins @ The Music Box, 9/16/07
I am loving this ATP-inspired idea of playing entire albums from beginning to end. Tonight we hit the Music Box to see The Melvins play Houdini and Mudhoney play Superfuzz Big Muff plus Early Singles. Sadly, we missed Flipper. We were late because I fell down the back steps as we rushed out the door. Bob wanted me to stay home and ice my foot, but no way was I missing this gig! We...

Win Tickets to Saturday's Melvins + Mudhoney Show
A pretty damn good cd came out on Tuesday, the soundtrack to a film about Kurt Cobain called About a Son. The soundtrack has no music from Cobain or any of his bands, instead it's mostly music he was listening to from bands he was fans of. Very few bands had as much influence on Kurt than the Melvins, and very few bands had as much college radio street cred the years before Nirvana...
