Cris Kirkwood is having trouble. It’s the middle of his band the Meat Puppets’ record release party, and the big spazz can’t seem to control himself sufficiently to keep his bass plugged in. This time, he’s yanked two cords at once, and struggles to get it happening again while his brother Curt continues spewing out clouds of acid-damaged noise on the other side of the stage. Noticing something wrong, Curt helpfully saunters over, holds one finger up to his right nostril, and blows a booger out the left one onto his hapless sibling’s shoulder. Cris’ first instinct upon getting the whole thing humming once again is to slide the neck against the amplifier head and begin humping it Jimi Hendrix-style. more ›

Tonight legendary Phoenix-based alternative rockers the Meat Puppets will be making their triumphant return to the Mint. The pop rock supergroup known as Operation Aloha (LAist Interview), which features members of Maroon 5, Gomez, Phantom Planet, are poised to headline the Troubadour with local buzz band the Parson Red Heads (LAist Review, #2, #3) in tow. And, lastly, Long Beach-based indie quartet Avi Buffalo (LAist Interview) will be gracing the Echo. Tomorrow is the finish up the AMGEN Tour of California in Pasadena. But before hitting the old money city, they're headed towards Santa Clarita this afternoon (where Six Flags Magic Mountain has decided to stay put). From 4 to 10 p.m. tonight “Rock the Bike,” a free outdoor cycling expo and music festival, will bring together an array of people following the stage 6 finish. Various bands will be playing and headlining act, the Gin Blossoms, will be on stage around 8 p.m. (of course, if it rains, who knows what will happen, this is an outdoor event). Not since Pee Wee's Playhouse has there been a children's show that grown-ups can enjoy as much as kids. Washington DC's local cable-access show, Pancake Mountain, has been attracting rockers like Deerhoof, Scissor Sisters, and Arcade Fire since 2003. Scott Stuckey's concept for the program was to have a children's show that is focused on fun, not on marketing. It's all about the music, and their live dance parties invite local kids to join in by way of an email list sent out to parents. The show is produced by Stuckey's Monkey Boy Studios, and run entirely by a group of volunteers (Bands also volunteer their time). The title song is written by the drummer from Fugazi, Brendan Canty. more ›

The Meat Puppets are back with a vengeance! Last night the Troubadour hosted the Los Angeles performance of the Meat Puppets’ reunion mini-tour. Brothers Curt and Cris Kirkwood have not shared a stage since the debacle that was supposed to be their tour opening for REM back in 1996. Since then, Cris’ personal struggles have been no secret to anyone, reaching their crescendo when he was shot by a post office security guard in 2003. The reunited brothers are about to release their first CD together since 1995’s No Joke. The new CD, Rise to Your Knees, was recorded with drummer Ted Marcus. This time, drummer Derrick Bostrom is not on on board. He is rumored to have quit music entirely. more ›
