Nebraska-based Tyson Fresh Meats Inc. is recalling more than 40,000 pounds of ground beef products shipped to several states, including California. The massive recall of 10-pound chubs of chuck fine ground beef 80/20, packed in eight-chub cases, follows a routine monitoring test that confirmed the presence of E. coli.
Where's The 40K Pounds Of Beef? Recalled Due To E. Coli
Dear Chefs: Supplier Tells Restaurants Why They Should Serve Only 'Clean' Meat
When you order a steak at a restaurant, do you know where the beef came from, what it was fed, and under what conditions it was slaughtered? Should that even matter? If you are among those who are lured into Sizzler because they advertise a $9.99 steak dinner deal, have you ever thought: Isn't that too cheap for good meat? (It is, by the way.)
UMAMIcatessen: DTLA Deli Concept Will Feature Meat-Centric Guest Chef Menus
Adam Fleischman has not been shy about his wish to expand UMAMI Burger in a big way, but for his next L.A. foodventure, he's taking on the iconic deli with UMAMIcatessen. Where's the E. Coli? L.A. Company Recalls Over 377,000 Pounds of Ground Beef
No one has reported getting sick yet, but just to be safe, a Los Angeles meat company has announced a recall of several cases of their ground meat and ground meat products out of concern the meat is tainted with E. Coli bacteria.
National Grilling Month: Special Events to Get Your Meat On
Independence Day may be long gone, but don't put the grill away quite yet. July is National Grilling Month and when the weather is this good, there's no reason to heat up the house with your energy-sucking oven. If the summer's got you feeling lazy and you don't want to stand over the BBQ in the heat, here are a few grilling events worth checking out.
Panic! At the Grocery Store: Bacon Could Go Up to $6 a Pound
Here piggy piggies, we've got some news for you: The price of bacon could potentially skyrocket. You may have already noticed it the last time you were trolling the meat aisle for your slab of choice. "The price of pork is giving many consumers sticker shock at the supermarket, where bacon prices alone have jumped at least 30 percent in recent weeks," explains CBS2.

PETA Models Shower on Hollywood Sidewalk, Cause Commotion
To draw attention to World Water Day yesterday, and to raise awareness about how meat production and consumption affects water usage, models from PETA stripped down and lathered up in a stunt that was situated on the sidewalk in Hollywood. The sight of the unusual scene was so distracting for one motorist, however, reports CBS2, that he "plowed into the car in front of him."*
Does Pork Inspire You?
Sorry, carnivores, but as of today, pork is no longer "the other white meat." Sure, you can call it that, but the people behind pork, aka the National Pork Board, have officially abandoned the 25-year-old campaign slogan, and instead will now ask you to "Be Inspired" by their product.
Happy Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day
Today is National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day. To celebrate, carnivores can get themselves to their nearest and/or favorite deli for a stack of meat on their bread of choice (though, come on now, to have a pastrami sandwich on anything but rye bread is sacrilege). Veggies and vegans, if you are craving the flavor without the flesh, hopefully you've got a spot in mind for a meat-free meal that can pass as observance. Not out to lunch yet? Take this quiz to see how much you know about pastrami. And let us know in the comments where you think L.A.'s best Hot Pastrami Sandwich can be found.
'Price is Right' Host Barker Tells Costco Their Veal is Wrong
Former Price is Right host and longtime animal rights advocate Bob Barker has become the public face of a campaign to urge retailer Costco to stop selling veal produced under cruel conditions.
The national organization Mercy For Animals launched the campaign, which involved obtaining hidden camera video recordings at Buckeye Veal farm in Apple Creek, Ohio, the supplier used by Costco for the meat. The video shows "baby calves covered in feces and chained by their necks in narrow stalls, where they cannot even turn around or walk," according to a release issued by Mercy For Animals.
Your Place? My Place? Nope. It's Corner Place for Korean BBQ
While I'm not one for tersely worded reviews, this meal at Corner Place in K-Town could pretty much be summed up as follows, to borrow from an old irreverent pre-meal blessing: "Good food, good meat, good God--GO EAT!"
A Welcome Addition to Manhattan Beach: Mr. Cecil's California Ribs

LA's 'Best New Chefs' are a Couple of Animals
This past week, Food & Wine magazine announced their selections for the Best New Chefs in America for 2009. Said Editor in Chief Dana Cowin: "We sought out great chefs in every corner of America, from Memphis, Tennessee to Portland, Oregon, and found some extraordinary cooking. Some of our winners are in seriously elegant restaurants. Others are in small, quirky, casual spots. But they’re all immensely talented, creative and driven.”
Villaraigosa's Weekend of Meat-ing, Greet-ing, & Tweet-ing
Incumbent Mayor Antonia Villaraigosa wouldn't take Steve Lopez up on the offer of comparing french dip sandwiches along with his challengers a few days ago, but according to his Twitter feed, he's happy to shake a few hands with voters at another famous LA meat sandwich shop: Langer's Deli. Villaraigosa is kissing babies and finding photo ops as part of a very busy weekend campaign bus tour of the city. Already today he has "rallied the troops in support of the solar plan Measure B" and "open[ed] a Fire Station in the Pico Union area." His campaign blog lists many such visits today and tomorrow (although the midday ones are absent from today's agenda) and includes an awful lot of greeting, and a lot of potential meat-eating. His late-night nosh stops include Canter's Deli at 10 pm and Pink's Hot Dogs at 11.

The Official Recession has been upon us for thirteen official months. It’s still not a reason we can’t enjoy life on the cheap. This is LA -- we’ve got options! We last feasted on Thai Town for just a few bucks, and stopped to smell the daisies for even less.

Check It Out: LA BBQ Fest
While not generally synonymous, Los Angeles and barbeque food have a lot in common. Both seem to attract the eccentrics, the slightly misguided. Both have a worldwide appreciation, but not many people talk about the greasy, slimy mess that gets left behind when all else is gone. And both are responsible for a lot of bad gas issues, and a sizable hole in the ozone layer.
Beef Recall at Ralphs

Comment of the (Earth) Day: Vegetarian = Less Pollution
There are still many comments to be left today by readers, but torrmoz's comment on an earlier story about vegetarian eating highlights points from a New York Times Mark Bittman story (Rethinking the Meat-Guzzler) about meat production and the environment. These are well worth bringing to the forefront:
The Cheese Stands Alone
It's National Cold Cuts Day. That term has always brought to mind those not very fresh, tasteless sandwich fillers served at large functions that you eat because you don't want to eat only macaroni salad. With the beef recall, dashing to your local butcher for some cold cuts sounds less appetizing than ever. However, the term "cold cuts" can include cheese and that's where you can freely celebrate.
Beef Recall Affects Ridiculous Amount of SoCal Restaurants
Fallout from the massive Westland/Hallmark meat recall scandal continues to affect Southland restaurants, stretching from San Diego to Ventura County. The California Department of Public Health has released a document listing every food purveyor which has purchased the recalled beef -- and at 59+ pages, it's a doozy. Chances are very good you have purchased or ingested some of Westland/Hallmark's product at some point, since markets and restaurants across the city are represented.
Beef From Chino Slaughterhouse Recalled By Gov't
Chino's Westland/Hallmark Meat Company came into the spotlight recently when secret video footage revealed staff was mistreating the animals. On the heels of this week's news that the slaughterhouse's manager could face several years in prison if charged with animal cruelty comes the news that the U.S. Department of Agriculture has recalled 143 million pounds of their frozen beef, making it "the largest beef recall in the United States," according to the Daily News.
He's Just Not That Into You...And Your Meat
Can we now add eating habits to the long list of modern relationship deal-breakers? The New York Times published a pre-Valentine's Day article this morning discussing the difficulties couples face when their diets are dramatically different:
Ben Abdalla, 42, a real estate agent in Boca Raton, Fla., said he preferred to date fellow vegetarians because meat eaters smell bad and have low energy.more ›
In-n-Out Burger Says 'No' to Abused Cattle Meat
After the Humane Soceity of the United States released a video (seen below) of abused cows at a Chino slaughterhouse, the U.S. Department of Agriculture began an investigation on Wednesday. With a quick response, The California Department of Education Nutrition Services Division urged all public schools to check where their cafeteria meat was coming from and two fast food chains cut their ties with the Chino based Westland/Hallmark Meat Company.
The president of In-N-Out Burger, Mark Taylor, said Thursday his company decided to stop buying beef from the company after learning of the video.more ›
