Photo by Susan Catherine via LAist Featured Photos on Flickr Earl Ofari Hutchinson, author, blogger and president of the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable was the man behind the dream of the 40-hour murder moratorium that Los Angeles County and City put into place this past weekend. He defends his idea in the LA Times, the very same paper, who in an editorial, lambasted the proposal: In its editorial, "A moment for Martin Luther......

We have all heard quotes from Martin Luther King Jr.'s historic "I Have a Dream" speech. Few people have had the opportunity to hear the speech in its entirety. Delivered at the 1963 March on Washington, this speech helped to establish King as a national figure and proponent of ending social injustice through civil disobedience and nonviolence. The following year, in 1964, King won the Nobel Peace Prize. It is worth taking the time......

Yesterday, September 20th, was the day that Mychal Bell was to be sentenced after being found guilty as an adult on the charge of aggravated battery. Prosecutors were asking for a sentence of 22 years at one point, then reduced it to 15 years. Last Friday the appeals court overturned his conviction. The court determined that Bell, who was 16 at the time, should not have have been tried as an adult. In spite......

2,000 DWP customers lost power today in Sun Valley. At noon, power was threatened to be cut from large energy consumers. But as the afternoon progressed, the Stage 2 was unlikely to happen. Yes, this is a heat wave. At age 18, having a DUI conviction, being a tagger and dealing in drugs is bound to get you caught up in murder charges in Van Nuys. A brush fire broke out in Castaic today......

Yesterday on tv someone said, "Wherever Jerry Falwell ended up today he's probably surprised." But let's hope he's not too surprised. Jerry Falwell knows he deserves eternal damnation of Hell. As do all the people who pretended that he was a decent man, and the hateful and damaging things that he said and did over the years was just business. As if what you say on TV and do behind closed doors isn't you,......

Current Record: 17-20, 4th Pacific, 10th West Last Week: It started out with a bang, ended with a whimper. Sam Cassell made a triumphant return to the lineup, pouring in 31 points off the bench in helping the Clippers overcome a 13 point deficit to the depleted Hornets. Yeah, I’d say they were happy to have him back. The Clips then followed it up with a solid road win (yes, you read that correctly)......

Sewage is all over the Santa Monica Bay after malfunctions at a treatment plant. Apparently it started bubbling up through manholes in Manhattan Beach, and then things just got ickier. The LA Times tries to figure out what went wrong. Fellow bloggers the 1947 Project conducted......

There is something distasteful that in the week before Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Los Angeles Times has decided to run a four-part series that maligns the legacy of one of California's greatest civil rights leaders, Cesar Chavez. Of course, if the foundation is bad, if there is graft and corruption, it should be exposed. There's just something about the timing. We're still plowing through this incredibly long article, but we wonder at......

Today, we as a nation celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Or do we? In a commentary by Earl Ofari Hutchinson in yesterday's Los Angeles Times, it was noted that nearly 40% of state and local public agencies remain open over MLK Day. Less than 30% of businesses give their workers the day off. "By contrast," Hutchinson writes, "about half of U.S. firms give their employees a day off on Presidents Day — after......

The Los Angeles Business Journal posted a story on 1/11/05 about the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors plans to explore the idea of creating a separate health authority to run the county’s entire hospital system, acting on a scathing report on its management of troubled Martin Luther King Jr. Medical Center. The near-unanimous vote at Tuesday's supervisor's meeting, opposed only by Supervisor Mike Antonovich, calls for a task force led by the Chief Administrative......
