MBW Paints Mural of Obama, King & Parks on La Brea

Overnight, french documentary filmmaker turned street artist Mr. Brainwash, or MBW, took his wall and redid it for inauguration day. On the side it states: Rosa Parks sat, so Martin Luther King Jr. could walk. Martin Luther King Jr. walked, so that Barack Obama could run. Barack Obama ran, so we could fly.

It's MLK Day, What Are You Doing?

For some, this it not even a holiday where you get the day off, but to the normal world (government, banks, etc), this is a holiday. And if you want to take that seriously and honor the man it is named after, Obama has made that possible with his huge Renew America Together program. The LA Neighborhood Cleanup Project is getting together in Silver Lake at 10 a.m. to clean up the neighborhood an there are plenty of other events around town.

Work-Free Tomorrow For MLK Day? Use Your Time For Good!

Many businesses and institutions will be closed around the nation and in Los Angeles tomorrow in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Although most people are perfectly pleased to spend the third day of a three-day weekend lolling about in bed, hunkering down in front of the television set, or enjoying some fun in our winter sun, there's a large-scale movement focused on making tomorrow about doing good for others and not just yourself.

Earl Ofari Hutchinson, author, blogger and president of the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable was the man behind the dream of the 40-hour murder moratorium that Los Angeles County and City put into place this past weekend. He defends his idea in the LA Times, the very same paper, who in an editorial, lambasted the proposal:

We have all heard quotes from Martin Luther King Jr.'s historic "I Have a Dream" speech. Few people have had the opportunity to hear the speech in its entirety. Delivered at the 1963 March on Washington, this speech helped to establish King as a national figure and proponent of ending social injustice through civil disobedience and nonviolence. The following year, in 1964, King won the Nobel Peace Prize. It is worth taking the time to listen to this speech, whose message is still relevent and inspirational today.

Yesterday, September 20th, was the day that Mychal Bell was to be sentenced after being found guilty as an adult on the charge of aggravated battery. Mrs. Coretta Scott King died in her sleep this morning in Atlanta. She was 78. She was discovered by her daughter Bernice King and and announcement was made by former Atlanta Mayor and King family friend Andrew Young.
