At yesterday's City Council meeting, City Librarian Martin Gomez said that although the library is seeing an increase in visitors--17 million people last year--and circulation--18 million items--that the budget could no longer sustain the department's system of 74 libraries and 1132 positions. Martin J. Gomez was confirmed today as the new City Librarian, charging him with the duty to oversee a $129 million budget, 6 million books and 1,100 employees throughout the 71 branches.
