LAst Night's Action: Kaboom Goes the Kobe

LAst Night's Action: Kaboom Goes the Kobe

Lakers 108, Mavs 104, OT - The Laker's season just keeps getting sweeter. This time, it was all Kobe Bryant -- who managed to score even when triple-teamed. End result? 52 points, including 22 in the 4th quarter and 8 in OT. It was the first game between the refurbished Laker's (Pau Gasol had 17 points and 14 rebounds) and the refurbished Mavs (Jason Kidd had 15 points and 11 assists). more ›

LAst Night's Action: Clippers Blazed, Spiezio Blitzed

LAst Night's Action: Clippers Blazed, Spiezio Blitzed

Blazers 82, Clippers 80 - Portland blew a 14 point lead in Staples Center one night after blowing a 15 point lead on the very same court. This time they were playing the Clippers, so things worked out OK. Los Angeles managed a pathetic 29 points in the first half, but did make a noble effort in the second. Corey Maggette was hot with 32 points, but missed a big shot with eight ticks left. more ›

LAst Night's Action: LA Hearts Bynum, Now

LAst Night's Action: LA Hearts Bynum, Now

Suns 106, Lakers 98 - Maybe Mitch Kupchak isn't a cupcake, but an evil genius. After mis-managing the Lakers in recent years, it turns out he was right about Andrew Bynum. He refused to trade the young center, and all of a sudden the kid got GOOD. Unfortunately, he's out with an injury and his backup was worthless against Phoenix (hence the evil part). Kwame Brown had seven turnovers and missed an open dunk. Bravo. He was already being booed in the first quarter, and was booed when he sat down for good in the third after committing his fifth foul. It's a tough cowd, and he's got large shoes to fill. Literally. As for the rest of the game, Kobe had a typical 30 point night, and Steve Nash had a typical 20 assist night. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Who Wears Short Shorts?

LAst Night's Action: Who Wears Short Shorts?

Celtics 110, Lakers 91 - Los Angeles ran into the buzzsaw that is Boston. Apparently, the first thing to get cut were their shorts. "I felt violated, I felt naked," remarked Kobe Bryant. There are so many places we could go with that. Actually, he was referring to the throwback short-sorts the team wore as a tribute to the rivalry and Jerry West, who was the honorary captain for the game. Maybe that's why Kobe was an abysmal 6-of-25. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Clips Burnt

LAst Night's Action: Clips Burnt

Suns 108, Clippers 88 - After getting pushed around by Laker's big man Andrew Bynum, Phoenix's Amare Stoudemire took his frustrations out on Clippers center Chris Kaman. Stoudemire had 30 points and 15 rebounds while limiting Kaman to just 9 points. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Win Battle of LA

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Win Battle of LA

Lakers 113, Clippers 92 - Kobe Bryant, again playing through pain (this time it was a pulled groin), sunk 32 points to lead the Lakers to victory. The Clippers also had players dinged up, and a host of them (including Elton Brand) never made it onto the court. Chris Kaman won the battle of the big men statisticly with 18 points and 16 rebounds, but young Andew Bynum (14 points, 9 rebounds, 6 blocks) performed well in the victory. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Respond To Not-So-Golden Statement

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Respond To Not-So-Golden Statement

Lakers 123, Warriors 113 - We're still pretty sure this is a .500 team masquerading with an occasional good run, and now even their Phil Jackson is down on Kobe and Co. The Laker's coach told the media that a 50-win season is out of reach. His squad, however, responded by out-scoring the nation's hottest team on Sunday night. Kobe Bryant led the way with 28 and both Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum hit double... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Big Game vs. Buffalo

LAst Night's Action: Big Game vs. Buffalo

Kings 8, Sabres 2 - Halfway through, it looked suspiciously like an SEC football score. Los Angeles was up 7-0 midway through the second period and coasted the rest of the way, making life easy on goalie Jonathan Quick. Due to injuries, Quick was making his first appearance in the NHL. For those keeping score at home, the Kings have tried more goalies this season than they had goals against the Sabres. Only in LA... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Win-Win for Phil Jackson

LAst Night's Action: Win-Win for Phil Jackson

Lakers 127, Nuggets 99 - Phil Jackson signed a $24 million contract extension for two years. Two hours later, his Lakers ripped apart the Nuggets. Good day. Heck, even Sasha Vujacic had 22 points -- 19 in the 4th quarter. Luke Walton had 14 points in just 27 minutes. Both were career highs. The Lakers are 9-6 and have recently had some pretty impressive performances. Ducks 4, Flames 1 - After getting yanked in Vancouver,... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Hoops Off to Good Start

LAst Night's Action: Hoops Off to Good Start

Lakers 119, Jazz 109 - The Lakers may have won their second straight game against a division champ. Kobe may be playing team ball (and even blocked a dunk, for cryin' out loud). We're still not buying it ... Derek Fisher was 0-for-7 in the first half against his former team, but finished with 19 points ... The Lakers removed press row from courtside, adding 15 more seats which are going for $2,300 per game.... more ›

Trojans' Second Drop This Week

Trojans' Second Drop This Week

After the Trojans' plummet in the polls following the loss to Stanford and the release of the first BCS poll, many thought the team couldn't or wouldn't drop any further. Not so, as the AP is reporting that a chartered plane with 82 players aboard, headed to Indiana for tomorrow's Notre Dame game experienced an extreme drop while flying through a severe thunderstorm. Weather was so bad that the pilot had to abandon his first... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Footies In Fisticuffs

LAst Night's Action: Footies In Fisticuffs

Chivas USA 3, Galaxy 0 - It looks like the British are in a fighting mood. After being tackled hard from behind, Beckham yelled at Jesse Marsch, his attacker (err, actually defender ... no, make that midfielder). That turned into a shoving match between the teams, which grew into a full on scrap involving at least one solid punch and a nasty headbutt. Mr. Prettyboy Beckham wasn't involved in any of the physical altercations, though... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Sparks Finally Die Out

LAst Night's Action: Sparks Finally Die Out

Comets 82, Sparks 72 - A long and painful season is over for the Sparks. Without a preggo Lisa Leslie, the team crashed and burned through the final half of the season, finishing with an overall record of 10-24. If you're really eager to check out some professional women's sports in LA, how about a football game later this week? Dodgers 4, Rockies 3 - The Dodgers took the rubber game in a 2-1 series... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Double Your Pleasure

LAst Night's Action: Double Your Pleasure

Dodgers 6, Astros 2 - Too bad the Dodgers weren't playing double or nothing. The Blue Crew split the series against Houston 2-2. In the final game, they turned four double plays. Second baseman Jeff Kent hit three doubles, including one for a two runs. His counterpart, Craig Biggio, also had a couple hits. Angels 4, Blue Jays 3 - LAnaheim avoided a sweep thanks to a home run by Gary Matthews, Jr. and a... more ›

The Dodgers Win! The Dodgers Win!

The Dodgers Win! The Dodgers Win!

The Dodgers hitters shortened up their swings. They were a bit more patient at the plate. They hit with runners in scoring position. And most importantly of all the Dodgers won a game! In fact Tubby got the first victory for a Dodger’s starting pitcher since July 26th when he posted a 5-4 at Colorado. Now Tubby didn’t have his best stuff. The Astros managed to get 10 hits off of him in six... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Offense Awful

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Offense Awful

Reds 1, Dodgers 0 - Life is wacky in Dodgertown. The pitching staff has been riddled with injuries, but held Cincinnati to one run. This was just days after shutting down Barry Bonds, who has smashed three homers and set the career record since departing LA. Meanwhile, the offense has a catcher hitting almost .300 but they've been shutout in three straight games. They actually haven't scored in 28 innings, making the Angel's post All-Star... more ›

Just Another Dodger Loss

Just Another Dodger Loss

The Dodgers made a better showing of things Friday night against the Diamondbacks. The game ended up being a good pitcher’s duel between Chad Billingsley and the D-Back’s Doug Davis. Bills ended up making one mistake, an eighth inning lead off homer to Chris Snyder which was the only offense mustered by either team. Bills tamed a D-Back’s locomotive that had won 10 of their last 12 games, five of which they scored seven... more ›

Heavens to Murgatroid

Heavens to Murgatroid

The word for the day is picayune. The main definition of picayune according to Dictionary.com is "of little value or account; small; trifling." To use it in a sentence: The Dodger's offense in Thursday night's 4-2 loss against the Giants was picayune. It's taken over 19 hours for the bad taste of the game to leave my mouth. Hell, I've even had to use a dictionary to describe it other than "fucking pathetic". Where... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Another Busy Sunday

LAst Night's Action: Another Busy Sunday

Angels 13, Tigers 4 - The Angels got back on track this weekend, hammering NL Central leader Detroit for 34 runs in a three game sweep. Anaheim reached double-digits in each game and had 12 runs by the end of the third inning on Sunday. Chone Figgins had three runs in the finale and every starter scored at least once. Rockies 9, Dodgers 6 - Los Angeles couldn't sustain a 9th inning rally and dropped... more ›

LAst Night's Action: None, Really

Beckham Watch - The British are coming! The British are coming! Wait! The British are here! And they're drop dead sexy. Tonight's Action - Games are back! After a longer All Star break than most, the Angels will welcome the Texas Rangers at 7:05pm. Ten minutes later, the Dodgers will get underway in San Francisco. The Blue Crew joins three players (Martin, Penny, and Saito) who were already in town for the All Star game.... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Playing The Dozens

LAst Night's Action: Playing The Dozens

Dodgers 9, Marlins 3 - The Dodgers took out their slump frustrations on the Marlins, avoiding what would have been the first ever sweep by the Fish in Dodger Stadium. Russell Martin put on a clinic in the final game before the All Star break, reaching home on all three of his plate appearances. He smashed a two run homer in the first, singled and scored a run in the second, and notched his third... more ›

Bring Out the Brooms!

Bring Out the Brooms!

Being the last real home game before they go on a 10-game roadtrip, I really wanted to witness the last game of the Met’s series Wednesday night. I’m sorry, but I think interleague play is a complete farce even if it is against the Angels. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Saenz Wins for Seanez

LAst Night's Action: Saenz Wins for Seanez

Dodgers 4, Blue Jays 3, 10 - It was a strange interleague game against Toronto. Brad Penny allowed one run in 7 and 2/3 innings, but got no decision. Takashi Saito blew the save, but didn't lose the game. Rudy Saenez only faced one batter, but it was enough for the win. Olmedo Saenz finally won it with a two-run blast in the bottom of the tenth. Angels 10, Cardinals 6 - The Halos hung... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Plenty For Mom To Talk About

LAst Night's Action: Plenty For Mom To Talk About

Dodgers 10, Reds 5 - All nine Dodger starters had at least one hit or run scored, giving the team moms something to be proud of. Cincinnati's Ken Griffey, Jr. didn't disappoint, either, going deep on Mother's Day for the sixth time in his career. Ducks 4, Red Wings 3, OT - The Ducks evened the Western Conference Finals against Detroit at a game each and claimed home ice advantage heading into the next two... more ›

Dead Team Walking?

Dead Team Walking?

The Lakers head into a must win game tonight in Phoenix (7:30 on KCAL 9 or TNT) with many fans and pundits thinking this is more a nationally televised execution than a playoff game. Look at the reports from yesterday’s Laker practice and the same feeling seems to have washed over the team. Not to worry though Laker fans, you’ve got Phil Jackson’s amazing motivational tools: “I did tell them that they had the brainpower... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Fall

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Fall

Suns 113, Lakers 100 - The Laker's season could be down to one game. The Suns outshone Los Angeles and took a 3-1 series lead thanks to huge performances from Steve Nash (23 assists, 17 points) and Amare Stoudemire (27 points, 21 rebounds). Nash's assist total was one shy off the all time playoff record, held by Magic Johnson (who was in the stands) and John Stockton. Not bad company. On the other side of... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Plenty of Offense

LAst Night's Action: Plenty of Offense

Giants 6, Dodgers 4 - He's not looking like A-Rod, but Barry Bonds is starting to look like, well, Barry Bonds. A little trimmer than the past couple years and a lot faster on the basepath, he's also plunking four-baggers out of the park as if he was just 40 years old. His three run shot in the first put the Giants ahead early. Los Angeles tied the game, but fell short in their comeback... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Clippers Win Battle of LA

LAst Night's Action: Clippers Win Battle of LA

Clippers 90, Lakers 82 -  LA's teams seem like they're headed in opposite directions. Kobe had 29, but the Clippers had five players in double digits. After the showdown at Staples, the Clippers have won seven of eight while the Lakers have dropped four of their last five. Both teams sit towards the bottom of the playoff field, with the Clippers (now a .500 team) only trailing their arena mate by a game and a half.... more ›

The LAkers Story: Kobe Leads by Sharing Instead of Scoring

The LAkers Story: Kobe Leads by Sharing Instead of Scoring

After a heartbreaking loss to the Houston Rockets on Friday night, the Lakers redeemed themselves by scorching the Sacramento Kings 126-103 at Staples Center on Sunday night. Kobe had a season-high 13 assists, while Maurice Evans and Luke Walton scored 21 and 18 respectively. more ›
