Tonight: DUI Checkpoints in Marina Del Rey Area and Pasadena

As with every weekend (and weekday), police are out to catch drunk drivers. Tonight, we know of two sobriety check points: one in Del Rey and another in Pasadena. From 8 p.m. to 3 a.m., the LAPD will hold a Sobriety & Drivers License Checkpoint at Lincoln Blvd and Maxella Ave at the border of the L.A. city neighborhood Del Rey and unincorporated Marina Del Rey. The LAPD's Pacific Area has experienced 108 DUI-related crashes and 963 hit and runs so far this year.

Dead Man Mistaken for Halloween Decorations

For four days, 74-year-old Mostafa Mahmoud Zayed was seen slumped over his balcony in Marina del Rey. Neighbors, who saw him on Monday, didn't think much of it--it was a dummy for Halloween, after all.

Medical Marijuana Dispensaries Raided on the Westside

A collective of enforcement agencies including the FBI, DEA, local police departments and the IRS raided at least two dispensaries on the Westside for unknown reasons this afternoon. Warrants were also served on the private homes of the owners. Organica Collective on Washington Blvd. in Culver City was raided followed by the Overland Gardens Collective in West Los Angeles were raided around 11 a.m. and authorities were still searching for unknown things hours later. A dog believed to be a pit bull was shot at one of the locations.

Music in film is one of the most important devices used in cinema today; this music has been ingrained in popular culture, to the point that most people could recognize the tunes. Also sprach Zarathustra, Ride of the Valkyries, Beethoven's 5th, are a few of the major works that come to mind. This week, you can hear a few of these tunes and more at several venues.

Goodbye! Whale in Marina Del Rey Heads North

That whale that drew hundreds to Marina Del Rey left Friday, presumably headed to its summer home in Alaska. Accompanied by about 50 bottlenose dolphins, the young 25-foot gray whale headed out of the marina's shallow waters after spending three weeks there. The whale had become quite a spectacle for people, even some paddled out to touch it, which is against the law. LAist posted a video and photos of the whale earlier this month.

LAist Featued Photos contributor Jonathan Alcorn took some amazing shots of the gray whale hanging out in Marina del Rey this week. The young whale, about 20 feet in length, has been hanging around drawing crowds because, hey, it's not just everyday that you get to see a whale so easily from shore. Yesterday, another contributor shared a couple videos with us.

Here's that baby gray whale we mentioned earlier this week. He's been hanging out in Marina Del Rey, showing off bits of his 20-foot long body when he surfaces, creating quite a spectacle for locals and tourists.

Female Bodies Found in Ocean off Redondo, Huntington Beaches

This morning a boat load of whale watchers discovered a woman's body a a quarter-mile off Redondo Beach. 39-year-old Cindy Denq's death is being investigated as a possible suicide. Once a passenger on a previous boat ride, Denq had jumped off the boat, but was pulled back onto the ship after the skipper stopped and had her pulled back on board. Today, police say it appears that she entered the water from the beach. Earlier this morning, another woman's dead body was found in the ocean, this time in Huntington Beach. Orange County deputies were called to a bar in Sunset Beach where a woman was reportedly bleeding profusely. Upon arrival, police only found a trail of blood leading to the water where she was found floating. "We're not sure what happened," a deputy told the AP. "All we know is something started here at the bar. We're not sure if this is a crime scene or an accident at this point, but we're treating it as a crime scene until we know further."

The Mysterious Green Waters of Marina del Rey

Sheriff's deputies in Marina del Rey are trying to figure out why the waters are green today, following a sighting reported this morning in the E Basin near the E-3200 dock, according to cbs2.com. Described as "a bright green substance," authorities have been able to determine that it is "a non-toxic dye," but how or why it is in the water remains unknown. Is this the result of an accidental spill, or are there some pranksters who are over a week late in expressing their St. Patrick's Day spirit, Chicago river style?

Did you Feel the Santa Monica/Marina Del Rey Earthquake?

The second 3.0 range earthquake in two days struck between Marina Del Rey and Santa Monica this evening at 7:42 p.m. The 3.4 shaker rattled some nerves but mostly scared the shit out of cats and small dogs.

A few minutes before 8:00 p.m. last night, a small 3.0 earthquake shook the Westside. The quake, located two miles north of El Segundo caused no reported damage, but a cat might have jumped and tipped over a glass of milk or something. Nevertheless, each little microquake is a good reminder to think about preparing oneself for "the big one." One good way is to participate in The Great Southern California ShakeOut where 3.7 million people have already signed up to drop, cover and hold on November 13.

This time it is LA Times Bottleneck blogger Steve Hymon calling out LA County Supervisor Don Knabe, a "leader in regional transportation." Well, the regional attraction that is the 22-mile bike path running from Temescal Canyon to Torrance has a section in Marina Del Rey that could be mistaken for the San Andreas Fault, according to Hymon who says the crack in pavement is "perfect for catching bike tires." So what's he doing about it? "Surely, such a leader will be able to get a relatively small section of bike path repaved so that grumpy reporters aren't making inquiries about it, as I'm about to do." Go, Steve, Go.

"It is imperative to know that when purchasing items on-line, if the price seems too good to be true, then it probably is too good and is possibly a stolen item," said an e-mail sent out this weekend by the LAPD announcing a press conference regarding hundreds of stolen tires and rims from newer model Mercedes Benz and BMWs.

Every Summer the number of outdoor concerts increase significantly. Why not? It's beautiful outside. In Marina Del Rey, they hold classical and popular concerts every Thursday and Saturday. This Thursday we have the opening ceremonies including two pre-concert events Trooping the Colors and a Water Show on the main channel. The highlight of this concert is USC professor Marek Szpakiewicz performing the Elgar Cello Concerto in E Minor. According to our all-powerful all-knowing editor, "you'll be hooked within seconds."

It's just another day at the beach for this polling place in Marina Del Rey, where volunteers hand out fresh-baked goodies to the voters and are hosting a BBQ for the poll workers.

I’ve always been a worker-outer. But lately, as I’ve spent more and more time on the cardio machines at 24 Hour Fitness, I can’t shake feeling that I’m just a hamster on a wheel in a vicious human experiment. To combat my paranoia and possibly find a mentally healthier hobby, I’ve decided to scope out what else LA has to offer in a weekly series, “Fitness for the Easily Bored.”

Love it or hate it, tonight's New Year's Eve. And while half of the city has vacated for NYE's in Vegas, there's plenty to do right here in LA to welcome '08.

As I prepared to move here from New Jersey in 1988, I kept hearing the same thing: “It’s all plastic Hollywood showbiz hair-metal people trying to make it big. You will not succeed and you will hate it.”

"Hi, this is Jackie Payne with Impact Distributers...I'm just calling to let you know that you have won one of FIVE fabulous prizes!"

The LA Times has definitely had its fair share of scandals in the near past with firings and hirings. Yet recently, content wise, the watchdog coverage of scandalicious politicians has been riveting. There is Mayor V and then there was the daily pounding of Rocky Delgadillo. The newest politician in the ring is 74-year-old 2nd district county supervisor Yvonne Burke who represents Watts, Culver City, Compton, South LA, Hollywood, Marina Del Rey, Inglewood to...

Remember when you moved to LA just south of Downtown, and you thought all those people who got to live in Santa Monica and Venice and Manhattan Beach were so lucky? Or maybe that was me. Either way, you were (I was) overlooking one of the major advantages of living so far from the beach -- you can bike there and get a great workout!

The noble and delicious sea-faring species caridea - more commonly known as shrimp - is a member of the phylum arthropoda, subphylum crustacea. Why is this interesting? Well, it's not - until you realize that those yummy little nuggets in your shrimp taco are actually more closely related to ants, lice, and cockroaches than they are to fish (phylum chordata). Isn't that FANTASTIC? Next time you want to freak out someone close to you,...

We rely on the kindness of strangers to show us their version of Los Angeles. Today, via Outdoors Club, we met a member of the Fairwind Yacht Club (a very cool organization if you like sailing, but don't own a boat) who took out a group of folks on a breakfast cruise. And here is what we saw...

As a girl with little money and parents who love to dine out, I often find myself eating with them on a Friday night. And I often have to twist arms to get to go to place I want (cough cough: Paco’s Tacos or Hide Sushi). Well, last Friday I was unable to twist the arm that feeds me. My step dad headed out towards Marina Del Rey hoping to take us to CPK or Souplantation (God forbid) or Nichols. I wasn’t in the mood for any of these establishments and begged to be taken to a waterfront-dining establishment. Being a good step dad, he obliged. The choices down at Fisherman’s Village—the waterfront “restaurant row” of Marina Del Rey—are sparse; there’s Shanghai Red’s, El Torrito, some Italian place, and Angler’s Choice, a seafood restaurant. Being a seafood lover and being a person of logic (a seafood restaurant by the sea should have great, fresh seafood), my mom and I voted “Angler’s Choice! Angler’s Choice!” And, unfortunately so it was.

A pair of LaRouche supporters ventured outside their natural habitat (arguing on the sidewalk with College Republicans) to spread their gospel at the Waterside Shopping Center in Marina Del Rey on Friday. According to the activists, mall staff called local police to have them removed from "private property." Authorities came, ran a quick check for wants and warrants, and determined that the protest was protected by law. One explained that, "This is free speech....

The other day, LAist received an inquiry via email about our picks for the restaurants that have something inedible (but, perhaps indelible) on the menu: A great waterfront view. We did a little culling, and have come up with the following lowdown.

Gold Line construction has made it out of the tunnel boring phase and onto the streets. Watch out on Third Street, between Herbert and Eastern avenues and on the south side of First Street, between Utah and Gless. This is the kind of traffic we like. Cheer for Gold!
