DUI Checkpoint in the Venice/Marina Del Rey Area Tonight

As usual, the LAPD is out to get drunk drivers this weekend. Tonight, the department's West Traffic Bureau will conduct a checkpoint on Lincoln Avenue between Washington and Maxella, which straddles the border between Los Angeles city limits and the unincororated Marina Del Rey (and if you really want to get nerdy, we'd call this the Del Rey neighborhood). The checkpoint, which will run from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m., is in response to 29 driving under the influence-related and 265 hit and run traffic collisions in the Pacific Division, says the LAPD. As always, you should never drive drunk in the first place. Police say if you see a drunk driver, it warrants a 911 call. more ›

As with every weekend (and weekday), police are out to catch drunk drivers. Tonight, we know of two sobriety check points: one in Del Rey and another in Pasadena. From 8 p.m. to 3 a.m., the LAPD will hold a Sobriety & Drivers License Checkpoint at Lincoln Blvd and Maxella Ave at the border of the L.A. city neighborhood Del Rey and unincorporated Marina Del Rey. The LAPD's Pacific Area has experienced 108 DUI-related crashes and 963 hit and runs so far this year. more ›

Goodbye! Whale in Marina Del Rey Heads North

That whale that drew hundreds to Marina Del Rey left Friday, presumably headed to its summer home in Alaska. Accompanied by about 50 bottlenose dolphins, the young 25-foot gray whale headed out of the marina's shallow waters after spending three weeks there. Female Bodies Found in Ocean off Redondo, Huntington Beaches

This morning a boat load of whale watchers discovered a woman's body a a quarter-mile off Redondo Beach. 39-year-old Cindy Denq's death is being investigated as a possible suicide. Once a passenger on a previous boat ride, Denq had jumped off the boat, but was pulled back onto the ship after the skipper stopped and had her pulled back on board. Today, police say it appears that she entered the water from the beach. Earlier this morning, another woman's dead body was found in the ocean, this time in Huntington Beach. Orange County deputies were called to a bar in Sunset Beach where a woman was reportedly bleeding profusely. Upon arrival, police only found a trail of blood leading to the water where she was found floating. "We're not sure what happened," a deputy told the AP. "All we know is something started here at the bar. We're not sure if this is a crime scene or an accident at this point, but we're treating it as a crime scene until we know further." more ›
