Interview: Inside Margaret Cho's New LA Show

Comedian Margaret Cho has never been afraid to push the envelope, challenge stereotypes and use humor to make some stunningly valid points. This year, Cho is embracing a new role--that of a singer/songwriter. She's now working on her first full-length music album, with the help of some well-known friends. Of course, Cho infuses the songs with her unmistakable wit, so it's safe to say her lyrics are just as memorable as her melodies. You don't have to wait until her album release to hear the new music. She's incorporated some of the new tunes into Fingerbang!--her exclusive comedy/variety show hosted at Largo at the Coronet. This month's show on Tuesday, March 24, will include guests such as Susie Suh and Grant-Lee Phillips. LAist recently caught up with Cho and chatted about her Largo show, songwriting and burlesque.

What can we say? The Playboy mansion loves LAist. After a highly amusing bout at Spike TV's Guy's Choice Awards afterparty, we were invited back to check out the 3rd annual Marijuana Policy Project fundraiser. With Perry Farrel of Jane's Addiction at the turntables and celebrities swarming the grounds, hundreds flocked to the Mansion with the sole intention to raise awareness about the importance of marijuana legalization. Well that, and obviously to flirt with this year's playmates.

I confess to being somewhat of a geek. I read Zapp comics, collect vinyl records and can recite Monty Python sketches verbatum. Which I guess makes me a "stoner-variety" geek. I am not a "braniac-geek" of the chess club, sci-fi variety. I don't watch the Sci-Fi channel unless TiVo decides I have to watch Outer Limits. Because TiVo is my god and must be obeyed.

There's only one band that matters in rock today. Their music is loud and offensive. They appear to be murdering cartoon characters. They appear to be invading the planet. They're funny and fast and have horrible songs, but you will never go to a Gwar show and come out of the pit unscathed without a smile on your face. Pearl Jam doesn't have the balls to let them open for them which is another...

We're constantly surprised to discover that people with the darkest sensibilities live in this blindingly bright city. Somehow these individuals learn to survive and thrive in an area famous for its sunshine. For example, artist/musician Dame Darcy chooses to live in our city instead of more appropriately goth-inspiring spots like San Francisco or New York or Prague. Darcy is a startlingly prolific author whose style can best be described as "Francesca Lia Block meets Edward Gorey." Most fans discovered Darcy's talents via her amusingly gothic and morbid graphic novel series, Meat Cake.

Tuesday brings all you happy LAists a little hip hop, a little country, a little rock, a little pop and a lot of conversation. It all sounds good, so choose wisely.
