After a Yearlong Closure, Manhattan Beach's Sand Dune Park to Reopen Sunday
Before it was developed into the city it is today, much of Manhattan Beach was made up of sand dunes. Now, one dune spared from apparently being shipped off to Hawaii's Waikiki Beach is left as a park in a residential neighborhood. Last year a group of neighbors complained that the park was hurting the neighborhood and the city council promptly closed it to study the issue and come up with solutions. Nearly a year later, the park opens this Sunday.
3.6 Earthquake Strikes Santa Monica Bay
A small earthquake, described by some as a "quick jolt," occurred just a few miles off shore of the South Bay this morning. The 3.6 magnitude shaker struck at 2:17 a.m. 3 miles from Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach, according to the USGS. It only took a few minutes before a 1,000 tweets blew by. "Nothing like going to bed and having mother nature rock you to sleep with an earthquake," said softpipes. Up here in the Valley, nothing was felt at LAist's Studio City headquarters. Some reported feeling it as far as Pomona, Simi Valley and Irvine. Did you feel it?

Bicycle theft was on the rise last fall in the South Bay and this was one reason why. Anthony Michael Taraszka, 33, and Michelle Renee Thomspon, 31, who were both arrested in 2004 for stealing 50 bicycles, were apparently stealing bicycles, strollers and motorized scooters to support their drug habit by selling parts on eBay. In all, 23 bicycles and 16 high-end strollers were found. Both were charged with multiple counts of possession of stolen property and identity theft.
Rally to 'Free the Dune!' With Beach Party Sunday
Manhattan Beach's 40-year-old Sand Dune Park has been behind a chain link fence since August, when city officials closed it down for what was supposed to be about a month of maintenance work. Only the popular fitness and recreation spot hasn't reopened, and many fear it will remain shut down because of a fear of destruction from over-use or "neighborhood problems" like parking.
AOL Starting Hyper-Local Sites, Begins with Manhattan Beach
AOL is launching a new neighborhood news service called Patch. It's hyper-local to the core, as they just hired a full time editor to live and breath Manhattan Beach day in, day out. Soon they'll launch a Redondo Beach version and so on, apparently. This type of reporting is much needed and if successful like Eric Richardson's blogdowntown, where city council agendas are scrutinized and development news is broke, this will be exciting. Kevin Roderick at LA Observed, however, has a note of caution: "the difficult trick on coverage of small cities is to be knowledgeable without becoming a tool of the city officials, politicians and community leaders who care more about favorable coverage and avoidance of controversy than about accuracy or independence." Currently a feature piece on the MB portal is a piece about parking meter rate hikes.

A series of vehicle burglaries in the Manhattan Beach area recently have prompted local authorities to caution shoppers at the Apple Store at the Manhattan Beach Village Mall to not leave their purchases in their vehicles after leaving the store. Since September police have determined that the burglars have watched customers exiting the store with new computers and then seized the opportunity to break in to the vehicles once drivers have left the Mall and driven to other locations and left the computer unattended in the parked car. The Manhattan Beach PD is working on solving these crimes, and are reminding shoppers not to leave pricey goods unattended in cars, no matter how far from the place of purchase you go or if the vehicle is locked.

Being Beautiful Wasn't Her Only Crime...
It's hard to juggle being a beauty queen and a wife and mom...but even harder if you add a whole other identity to the mix. Shaw was arrested in Honolulu last month, after detectives here found her rented home full of "hundreds of stolen credit cards," along with "Social Security numbers, addresses and birthdays of victims and potential victim," according to abc7.
