Topanga, Malibu Creek & 5 Other Local State Parks Affected by Service Cuts
When Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger saved state parks from closing, it didn't mean he saved them from service cuts.
Today, state park officials announced how they would deal with a $14.2 million budget cut: Superintendents for each district (for example, many of L.A.'s nearby parks are in the Angeles District, beaches in the OC and Ventura County are in the Orange Coast and Channel Coast districts, respectively) had to share the sacrifice and find cuts on a park-by-park basis.
Fires in Los Angeles, Beverly Hills & Malibu*
Reports are coming in about firs in the Los Angeles area. At about 3:30, a fire broke out at mobile home near a state park in Malibu Creek State Park. While the home fire was knocked down, the fire has spread to hillside brush and has at least burned through 10 acres. Park visitors have been evacuated. Update: As of 6:43 p.m., the fire had burned 20 acres and was at 90% containment. "Hopefully within an hour we'll have full containment," Inspector Sam Padilla with LA County fire told LAist.
King Gillette Ranch Opens Today
Yup, it's what you were thinking -- razors. The baron of a clean shave himself, King Camp Gillette, bought this land off of the now Mulholland Hwy in 1926 after making a fortune in the early 1900s off of the safety razor. Today, his home and ranch are open to the public for the first time. Near the entrance of Malibu Creek State Park, the 588-acre park was collaboratively purchased for $35 million by...
Bigger & Crazier Cliff Jumping at Rindge Dam

Malibu Canyon Rock Pool Jumping
It's summertime folks, and we hope you are enjoying the many refreshing activities around LA. We recently visited this very same spot at Malibu Canyon's Rock Pool (shown in the video) and are not so confident the water is as deep this year (but we can hope!). Still, it's a great hike that you'll get wet on unless you are some kind of super rock climber....
This Week in -ist
Spring is when we get busy here in the Ist-A-Verse. Very busy. But, after staying bundled-up indoors all winter, it's nice for us to be out, about, and collecting things to write about for you. Here's a glimpse at what's been keeping your favorite citybloggers busily away from home and out of bed.
What You MIssed this Holiday Weekend

Photo Essay: Malibu Creek's Rock Pool
It was about time we visited Malibu Creek in Calabasas! 25 miles from Downtown LA or a quick drive from Woodland Hills, this is an LA treasure we must visit much more often. We went in blind, without any research, excited to see this talked about park. Given a map, we looked and found a very short hike to start off with. It had a cool name too: Rock Pool. Little did we know,...
Happy 2006! Take a hike.
Earlier this week when we were hurting from the evils of drink, we got this advice over and over: exercise. Realizing you may have had a bit of liquor last night -- and keeping in mind that weather may soon make this impossible -- we suggest a series of walking/hiking resources. Because the air might do you good.
