DVD Tuesday: Will Avatar suck in 2-D?

3-D televisions are still a technology of the near-future so everyone who buys Avatar will be watching it in good old-fashioned 2-D. Absent the gloriously immersive world created by James Cameron, will audiences be distracted by the obvious plotting and tinny dialogue? Jeff Bridges should have won an Oscar long before getting one for Crazy Heart (The Fisher King anyone?). While his turn as Bad Blake didn't blow me away, it was a solidly professional turn in an otherwise mild movie. A year ago, smart money pegged Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones as a surefire Oscar contender. Nope! We need more movies like 44-Inch Chest. Is Ray Winstone ever not awesome? Don't worry -- Solar Anus Cinema isn't what you think. It's, you know, arty. more ›

"Speechless" finally has its own home

For those of you who've been reading Nikki Finke's blog , the "Speechless" videos are old news by now. For those who haven't, they are a series of pro-WGA videos that demonstrate just how vital writers are to the creative process. Conceived by filmmaker George Hickenlooper and writer Alan Sereboff, the videos have been appearing sporadically since November. They all feature A-list talent appearing in what are essentially silent films. Anyway, they are finally all collected in a single place so watch, enjoy and organize! more ›

TV Junkie: NEW New New Episodes of: "Ugly Betty"/"The Office"/"30 Rock"/Etc.; Don't Forget to Watch the Swan Song Episodes of "The O.C." Starting Tonight

The long drought is over my friends -- regular programming is back, we have new shows and new series coming on every day. My life has some purpose again. My thumb was blistered from almost 2 weeks of endlessly scrolling through channel after channel of repeats and other unwatchable TV - I had almost depleted my tin of Bag Balm. Thank you TV, thank you networks, I may have said some harsh things last week but it was the blackberry brandy talkin', I swear. more ›

Renee Zellweger is Cuter Than a Sack of Used Buttholes aka LAist Elina's New Years Resolution for 2007

I have decided to take a new approach to writing film reviews in 2007. No more feeling obligated to see and write about Important Hollywood Crap. C'mon, are there actually any LAist readers who care about that shit? I figure if people want to read that stuff they can open the LA Times or the Weekly and read film reviews by someone who probably cares about things like oeuvres and mise en scène and didn't... more ›
