Sure, Department Store Staff Can See Into Your Dressing Room. They Aren't Pervs, They Just Think You're a Thief.

Sure, Department Store Staff Can See Into Your Dressing Room. They Aren't Pervs, They Just Think You're a Thief.

If you ever feel like you're being watched while you try on clothes in the department store dressing room, well, maybe you are. A CBS2 undercover op reveals that the doors of several area department stores are deliberately designed so that store employees can see in. Oh, but don't worry, it's not because they're pervy, it's because they think you're a thief. more ›

Martha Stewart Suffers Pain of Faux Pas as Casserole Dishes are Recalled

Martha Stewart Suffers Pain of Faux Pas as Casserole Dishes are Recalled

Casseroles may be considered a cold-weather dish, but that doesn't mean that we SoCal-ers won't be devastated by the fact that pans made by Martha Stewart to cook the traditional meal are being recalled. The Martha Stewart Collection Enamel Cast Iron Casseroles, which were sold at Macy's, posed burn and laceration hazards (how gauche, Martha), according to a statement released by the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission. more ›

TV Junkie: TV As Thanksgiving Coping Mechanism

If you are either cooking the Thanksgiving feast or are fortunate enough to be sitting around, waiting for it to be cooked, you might want to have some television accompaniment other than the endless cavalcade of football games, college and otherwise. more ›

Goodbye, Macy's

Goodbye, Macy's

Macy's today announced that they will be closing 11 underperforming stores, including one in the Los Angeles area. This means clearance sales next week! "These closings are part of our normal-course process to prune underperforming locations each year in order to maintain a healthy portfolio of stores," said Macy's Chief Executive Terry J. Lundgren in a statement. Ahem, there's nothing normal about this. The locally affected Macy's is downtown in the Ernst & Young Plaza at 735 S. Figueroa St. more ›

This Week in the World of -Ist

Protest over national vs. regional chains, the never-ending debate over the place of cars and bicycles in our metropolises, professional sports scandals, remembering a solemn day, and being issued a search warrant - it all happened across our sites this week! more ›

This Week in the World of -Ist

All across the Ist-A-Verse (or at least the American parts thereof), writers and editors are in the midst of enjoying their three-day weekend. But after the week we've all had, we feel like the break is not only needed, but deserved. Just look at everything we've been doing! more ›

Make LAist a Concert Poster, Win Tickets For Macy Gray Playing a Private Event at a Jazz Club

SXSW is right around the corner, in fact LAist will be there in less than a week. We are currently holding a contest to let a local band play at SXSW, and now we want to let someone local make our concert poster. Coincidentally, we also have 10 pairs of tickets to see the outrageously wonderful Macy Gray on Thursday, March 8th. But not just any old Macy Gray show (as if there was... more ›

Happy birthday, David Sedaris

Happy birthday, David Sedaris

If you're reading this, it means you survived the various horrors of Christmas. No, we don't mean drunk Aunt Cindy's hair catching on fire at the dinner table. We're talking about the horrors of Santa's helpers... the ones our loving American parents don't tell us about. more ›

Midwestern Mints Coming West With Macy's?

Midwestern Mints Coming West With Macy's?

Our first introduction to the Frango came in Vancouver via Seattle, almost three decades ago. The bite-sized, mint-flavored chocolate was a holiday-time treat, brought up and over the border after its purchase at Frederick and Nelson. But like many childhood tidbits, and like many things that disappear over time, the Frango faded from our grasp in the early 80s. While that constitutes our personal history with the department store confection, the candy's own history reaches back much farther. more ›

Smelling Like Britney Spears...

Smelling Like Britney Spears...

LAist got a nice little e-mail reminder reminder from our friends at Macy's the other day: Britney Spears' latest fragrance -- Curious Britney Spears In Control -- is available for order. (Yeah, we didn't understand that name at first either). But Brit's website cleared up the confusion for us: more ›

LAist Postcard from Gotham City

First off, we have to apologize to the fine folks at Gothamist and Six Apart, because we had to forsake their Happy Hour out of sheer exhaustion. LAist had a few too many $4 martinis yesterday in the Village at the Fat Black Pussycat, and was made to suffer through eating at the "interactive" Jekyll and Hyde afterwards--as if getting lost in the zig zag streets and being in dire need of a bathroom wasn't torture enough. We've watched polar bears frolic at the Central Park Zoo, delighted at the Jackass penguins and walrus at the New York Aquarium, eaten a famous Magnolia Bakery cupcake in front of Liv Tyler and her rock star husband, taken the Staten Island Ferry, and stopped to smell the roses at the annual Macy's Flower Show...among many other things New York. Tonight we're napping and soaking in the tub at our fabulous hotel, so we can rest up before we go watch the Circus come to town and grab some late-night hot dogs. more ›

The Coffee Buzz

Sometimes Los Angeles may be Los Angeles but doesn't feel like Los Angeles, which is totally the case for the wonderful town they call Pasadena. Nice and far away from the hustle and bustle of downtown, the self-entitlement of the Westside and the Hip-Factor of Hollywood, Pasadena and the coffee shops that reside there feel normal, comfortable and relaxing. more ›
