Wow, Just Wow: Nickel Diner's Smac & Cheese

Heaven comes in the form of oooey, gooey, and slightly crunchy with a spicy kick. Meet Nickel Diner's appropriately named Smac and Cheese ($7.50). Large macaronis are smothered with four cheeses--cheddar, fontina, pepper jack and mozzarella--mixed with a few roasted tomatoes and topped with baked breadcrumbs and herbs. Wowee.

"After trying numerous mac and cheese recipes we finally came to what we think is the perfect mac and cheese, which is a combination of three cheeses, a secret cheese recipe I can't tell you," explains Edendale Grill owner Melanie Tusquellas over our table as we feast on the dish. "It's simple, easy and has no bread crumbs."

What do you do when the club you DJ at closes down temporarily? You can either get a new job, do nothing or follow a dream you've always wanted to do--open a restaurant. And that's exactly what Chef Doomie (some may know him as DJ Doomie) did when Roberto's closed down and the owners gave the "ok" to use the kitchen to start a comfort food (yes, not Thai) vegan restaurant in the space.

If you're on a self-declared "Great Los Angeles Mac & Cheese" hunt, then the fancy chain restaurant that is Fleming's Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar is a needed stop. It's not the best we've had in this city (tough choice between Pete's Bar & Grill and some others), but it certainly ranks up there as a memorable experience with the al dente cavatappi double elbowed pasta drowned in a creamy mild cheddar spiked with chipotle to taste.

In Los Feliz, you've got the trendy Fred 62 with their talked about Mac Daddy & Cheese Balls ($6.62) coated in "spicy breadcrumbs" (that we did not find too spicy). Over in Sherman Oaks, there is the eclectic Boneyard Bistro who serves up Fried Mac n’ Cheese ($4/$6), which are more accurately, shells. Put them face to face and who wins the battle?

With similar restaurant names, why not compare two feel-good comfy foods back to back? First, there's the Kitchen 24 in Hollywood with their Smac & Cheese ($8.95) made out of cheddar, mascarpone, smoked gruyere and topped with a basil herbed crust. Over in Silver Lake, The Kitchen serves it's Mac N' Cheese ($8.00) with extra sharp cheddar in a garlicky sauce.

LAist Featured Photos contributor Hinducow knows no boundaries of eating in the Los Angeles area. He submits these two dangerously delicious photos with these descriptions:

"In economic yuckytimes, it's good to be reminded of how awesome just cookin' mac n' cheese n' peas at home can be. It's not always about eating out," wrote 护士黑鹰 in the caption of her above photo on Flickr. Intrigued, the recipe had to be asked for and she was happy to share how she doctors up boxed macaroni and cheese:
