Sad Mac: DTLA's Mac & Cheeza Closing Sunday (But They Aren't Going Away!)

Sad Mac: DTLA's Mac & Cheeza Closing Sunday (But They Aren't Going Away!)

Has the comfort food bubble burst, or is this restaurant closing story just another case of landlord-tenant strife? The latter seems to be the case when it comes to the impending shutter of Mac & Cheeza, the Downtown eatery that specialized in macaroni and cheese. more ›

Hollywood's Citizen Smith Has Defected

Hollywood's Citizen Smith Has Defected

Cahuenga Corridor restaurant Citizen Smith has closed for good, according to Eater LA. "The restaurant was abruptly shuttered by the court receiver put in place to settle the divorce of current operators Brett and Karina Sulzer. Landlords have already listed the property on LoopNet." The beautiful "junk store-chic" space made (if not much else, alas) great mac and cheese, as we learned during dineLA last year. Watch that space--since the city plans to transform the alley out back into its first Pedestrian Alley. more ›

Mac Attack: 28 Of the City's Best Mac & Cheese Dishes

Mac and Cheese can be a very personal thing (trust me) and to pursue the best and most satisfying restaurant offering is a noble, and often unending pursuit. DineLA serves up a generous forkful of noodles-and-cheese intel in their "Get Your Mac On" breakdown of where to go for what kind of Mac attack you're having, like Old School (101 Coffee Shop, Lola's), With a Twist (Ford's Filling Station, Corkbar), Potpourri (First & Hope, Mac & Cheeza), or even Gluten Free (Farmstand) just to name a few on this calorie-dense and impressive 28 restaurant list. What could they have possibly left out? more ›

For Chef Nicholas Shipp, you don't overthink your food. Rather, keep it simple and have fun, he says. Inside his newest venture in Santa Monica, with 28-foot exposed ceilings, The Upperwest carries a relaxed vibe with a touch of New York (think TriCeBa) that nicely complements Shipp's high quality (yet fun) dishes. more ›

Jonathan Gold Reviews L.A.'s New Mac & Cheese Eatery

Jonathan Gold Reviews L.A.'s New Mac & Cheese Eatery

Pulitzer Prize-winning Jonathan Gold of LA Weekly today acknowledges that naming the best mac and cheese in L.A. is a battle between foodies, but he gives a big nod to Larkin's in Eagle Rock. And it's Larkin Mackie himself who recently opened a mac & cheese-dedicated restaurant in downtown which Gold visited: "It is superb drunk food — on weekends, Mac & Cheeza stays open until 2 a.m. And you get a shot at the classic banana-Nilla Wafer pudding from the recipe of Mackey's mom, an intense, thin custard that resolves into a divine containerful of sweet banana-spiked mush. Is this the mac 'n' cheese of the future? It might be." See LAist's photos of the eatery here. more ›

Hugo's Introduces Vegan Mac & Cheese

There's no question about it. So when they introduced a vegan mac and cheese special ($7.50) for the month of February, it had to be tried. more ›

What do you do when the club you DJ at closes down temporarily? You can either get a new job, do nothing or follow a dream you've always wanted to do--open a restaurant. And that's exactly what Chef Doomie (some may know him as DJ Doomie) did when Roberto's closed down and the owners gave the "ok" to use the kitchen to start a comfort food (yes, not Thai) vegan restaurant in the space. more ›

Thumbs Up: Chipotle Cheddar Mac & Cheese

Thumbs Up: Chipotle Cheddar Mac & Cheese

If you're on a self-declared "Great Los Angeles Mac & Cheese" hunt, then the fancy chain restaurant that is Fleming's Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar is a needed stop. It's not the best we've had in this city (tough choice between Pete's Bar & Grill and some others), but it certainly ranks up there as a memorable experience with the al dente cavatappi double elbowed pasta drowned in a creamy mild cheddar spiked with chipotle to taste. more ›
