Ken Russell's The Devils is one of the most controversial films ever made. Based on the Loudun possessions of medieval France, it's a brutal critique of theocracy and power, and its own poster frankly warns the matrimony of sex, violence, and sacrilege "is not for everyone". Nearly 40 years on, The Devils has yet to be released uncut on home media. But BAFTA and the American Cinematheque bring it to the Aero this weekend to tempt fate and pay tribute to Ken Russell. The "Brave New Worlds" series also features sci-fi-devo-mind-warp Altered States, the D.H. Lawrence adaptation Women in Love, and Tchaikovsky biopic The Music Lovers. If the name Ken Russell still leaves you wondering, "Who?", then head up to Hollywood, where the Egyptian hosts Russell's film version of The Who's Tommy, paired with Lisztomania, another Roger Daltrey-starring bizarro rock opera.
LAist Film Calendar: The Devils is Sacrilicious!
Pencil This In: Hot Latin Sounds, Car Chases and Interactive Comedy
Tobacco and rum, two things traditionally associated with the Caribbean, especially Cuba. It is also the name of a hot local salsa band, only in Spanish -- Tabaco y Ron. Tonight, they help kick off the 11th Annual Salsa Congress which runs from Thursday through Sunday. Tabaco y Ron will headline the kickoff party tonight at The Proud Bird near LAX.
Tonight In Rock: The Allman Brothers, Jane's Addiction, Ben Folds, M83
Tonight legendary Southern rockers the Allman Brothers Band will be concluding a two-night stint at the Greek Theatre with the Doobie Brothers. The buzz from last night's antics, Tom Petty and Bruce Willis joining onstage to jam, is still lingering across the internet. Winston-Salem-bred singer-songwriter/pianist Ben Folds is poised to headline the Hollywood Palladium. Denver-based singer-songwriter Jill Sobule (LAist Interview), best known for her 1995 single "I Kissed A Girl," will be gracing Largo at the Coronet. And, lastly, electronic shoegazer Anthony Gonzalez, otherwise known as M83, will be taking over the Glass House in Pomona. But we strongly suggest doing whatever it takes to get into the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre to catch local alternative rock outfit Jane's Addiction. Cleveland-bred industrial rockers Nine Inch Nails are slated to co-headline.
Tonight In Rock: Coheed and Cambria, M83, Lambchop, Earthless
Tonight NY-based hard rockers Coheed and Cambria (LAist Review) will be performing at the Forum with none other than Slipknot. Nashville's own alt-country rockers Lambchop are poised to grace the stage at Largo at the Coronet. And, lastly, San Diegan psych rock outfit Earthless will be rocking out in a warehouse off the 10. But we strongly suggest doing whatever it takes to get into the Walt Disney Music Hall to catch Anthony Gonzalez, the french electronic mastermind behind M83, accompanied by the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Tonight In Rock: The Smashing Pumpkins, Sébastien Tellier, School of Seven Bells, Jonathan Richman
Tonight Chicago-based alternative rockers the Smashing Pumpkins will be concluding a two-night stint at the Gibson Amphiteatre. LA locals the Afternoons (LAist Review, #2) are slated to headline Spaceland. Quirky folk rock outfit Eagle Winged Palace have a record release show at the Silver Lake Lounge. If you missed Brooklyn-based School of Seven Bells opening up for the M83 show over the weekend (shame on thee!), then catch them tonight at the Airliner in Downtown with LAist favorites Gangi (LAist Review). And, lastly, MA-based singer-songwriter Jonathan Richman will be performing at the El Rey Theatre. But we recommend heading over to the Henry Fonda Music Box to catch French electro-pop sensation Sébastien Tellier.
Tonight In Rock: Sergio Mendes, Dir En Gray, M83, The Melvins
Tonight Grammy Award-winning Brazilian artist Sergio Mendes will be performing at Club Nokia in Downtown. LA-based punk rockers the Melvins are concluding a two-night stint at the Troubadour. Oakland's own abstract hip hop sextet Subtle will be stopping through the Knitting Factory with Zach Hill of Hella. And, lastly, English singer-songwriter Holly Golightly is slated to share the stage at Spaceland with Frank Fairfield. But we recommend heading over to the Henry Fonda Music Box to see French electronic group M83. School of Seven Bells, a relatively newfangled Brooklyn-based group formed by Benjamin Curtis of Secret Machines, will be opening.
