Tonight In Rock: John Legend, Mew, Band Of Skulls, The 88

Tonight virtuosic R&B singer-songwriter John Legend will be performing at the Greek Theatre. English rockers Band of Skulls are poised to take on the El Rey Theatre with labelmates the Duke Spirit. And, lastly, LA-based indie rock outfit the 88 will be kicking off a month-long residency at Spaceland. But we strongly suggest doing whatever it takes to get into the Troubadour to catch Danish rockers Mew, who are slated to open for NIN later this week. LA-via-Tel Aviv transplant Luke Top—otherwise known as Fool's Gold front man—is slated to kick things off.

Tonight In Rock: Dawes, Luke Top, Abe Vigoda, Wait.Think.Fast.

Tonight local alt-rockers Dawes will be taking on their second residency of the week (their first takes place at the Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa every Monday) at the Echo with Slang Chickens in tow. Experimental punk outfit Abe Vigoda are poised to take on the Smell. And, lastly, Echo Park-bred indie rock quartet Wait.Think.Fast. will be gracing La Cita. But we strongly suggest heading over to Pershing Square in Downtown to catch LAist favorite, LA-via-Tel Aviv transplant Luke Top—who may also be recognized as the front man of local afro-centric indie pop outfit Fool's Gold. Fullerton's own garage rockers My Pet Saddle are slated to kick things off.

Tonight In Rock: Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Nosaj Thing, Luke Top, Xu Xu Fang

Tonight local electronic mastermind Nosaj Thing is poised to headline the Airliner in Lincoln Heights. LA-via-Tel Aviv transplant Luke Top—otherwise known as Fool's Gold front man—will be gracing Spaceland with English rockers the Veils for this week's edition of Club NME. And, lastly, local psych rock outfit Xu Xu Fang (LAist Review, #2, #3) are poised to headline Three Clubs. But we strongly suggest heading over to Amoeba Music to catch Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros (LAist Review), who will be ringing in their forthcoming debut Up From Below.

Tonight In Rock: Vieux Farka Touré, The Hold Steady, Kitty, Daisy & Lewis, Fishtank Ensemble

Tonight Brooklyn-based rockers the Hold Steady will be performing to a sold-out crowd at the El Rey Theatre with El Bronx in tow (that would be the Bronx you know, only performing mariachi songs). English country/blues trio Kitty, Daisy & Lewis are poised to grace the Echo with none other than local indie rockers Le Switch. And, lastly, Oakland-bred Euro-American musical group Fishtank Ensemble will be performing at Bordello. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Troubadour to catch Malian singer and guitarist Vieux Farka Touré, son of one of the African continent’s most internationally renowned musicians Ali Farka Touré. LAist favorite, LA-via-Tel Aviv transplant Luke Top—also known as Fool's Gold front man—is slated to kick things off.

Tonight In Rock: Art Brut, White Rabbits, Chairlift, Busdriver

Tonight English/German indie rockers Art Brut will be continuing a three night stint at Spaceland with Rumspringa (LAist Review, #2) and Voxhaul Broadcast in tow. Brooklyn-based indie pop act Chairlift (LAist Review), who gained popularity through those (goddamn) lurid Apple commercials, are poised to grace the Echo with Fool's Gold front man Luke Top. And, lastly, local rapper Busdriver (LAist Review, #2) will be headlining the Knitting Factory's Main Stage in celebration of his forthcoming disc, 2009's Jhelli Beam. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Troubadour to catch NYC-based indie rock sextet White Rabbits. LAist favorites the Subjects are slated to kick things off.

December is list-making season. And for us music journalists, it is a time to look back on scores of albums, reflect upon the music and recapitulate our favorites. But this year, just like the last, we took this opportunity to flip that tradition upside down, asking the artists that influenced us what influenced them. The prompt was not limited to albums that came out in 2008.
